Abstract wall art works because it adapts to the viewer, offering something new each time you see it. It can bring energy or calm, tension or balance, depending on the space it inhabits. The repeating windows, sharply angled panels and strong diagonal division transformed the architecture into something much closer to an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI had photographed VIA 57 West more than once before finding this particular viewpoint. What finally interested me was the way two very different sections of the building collided within the frame. One facade sweeps diagonally across the photograph in a disciplined pattern of recessed windows, while the other becomes a tighter arrangement of balconies, glass and rectangular compartments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe geometry is complicated, yet there is still order in it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was unnecessary. Removing it pushed the photograph further away from a conventional architectural record and toward line, repetition, contrast and shape. The bright exterior panels become almost white against the deep window openings, making the entire surface feel graphic and dimensional at the same time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVIA 57 West was designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, and its unusual form has always stood apart for me among Manhattan's modern buildings. The architecture stopped reading as a structure and became a pattern.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRows of angular panels repeat across the facade, getting progressively smaller as they climb toward the top of the frame. In black and white, the geometry becomes even more pronounced. Bright triangular surfaces sit beside deep shadows, while the windows and structural lines underneath add another layer of repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI deliberately left a large area of clean white sky above the building. That open space gives the dense pattern somewhere to go and exaggerates the sense that the facade is continuing upward almost indefinitely. The perspective also changes the scale. Forms that appear large and heavy near the bottom become smaller, tighter and more abstract as they recede.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the kind of architectural photography I enjoy most. I am not simply recording what a building looks like. I am looking for the smaller visual relationships hidden inside it — rhythm, repetition, contrast, angles and the way perspective can transform something familiar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePhotographed in Adelaide, Australia, the scene becomes less about a particular piece of architecture and more about shape and structure. Small ripples gathered into larger patterns, and shifts in brightness became more visible than individual waves. The warm light softened the colour differences, leaving the curve and the repeated marks of the surface to carry most of the visual interest.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph holds the pleasure of seeing a familiar natural subject from an unfamiliar height. It is a quieter aerial image, focused on one part of the ocean rather than a broad view of the coastline. Fine horizontal lines run across both surfaces, revealing texture within the larger curves. A small patch of orange light appears high in the frame, giving the photograph a brighter point around which the surrounding shapes settle.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs I moved through the canyon, the relationship between light and stone changed with the viewpoint. I chose an angle where the walls could form a natural frame within the image. Their edges create a winding opening, but the photograph is as much about the surfaces around that opening as the space beyond it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the way this close view can read as both a landscape and a natural abstract. The sandstone remains recognisable, yet its folds and colour transitions become the main subjects. This canyon wall art can add warm red and cooler purple tones to a contemporary living room or study. What held me here was the way its mirrored facade turned Broadway into something fluid, breaking the street into bands of colour, stretched faces, fragments of advertising and distorted architecture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this in New York City in 2011. Rather than showing Broadway directly, I concentrated on what the glass was doing to it. The reflections bend across the individual panels, changing shape each time they cross a seam. Faces from theatrical advertisements stretch and repeat. Reds, yellows and blues run into one another. Even recognizable pieces of the street become difficult to place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat uncertainty is what makes the photograph work for me. It sits somewhere between city photography and abstraction. I know I am looking at Manhattan, but the familiar details have been rearranged by the surface of the building into something much less literal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe strongest part of the image is the colour. Broadway already has an extraordinary visual density, and here the mirrored exterior compresses much of that energy into a single frame. Nothing stays perfectly straight. Lines tilt, faces distort and blocks of colour seem to move through the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to scenes where ordinary architecture unexpectedly changes what I see. In this case, the building was not simply reflecting New York.
