I photographed the frog with its head and part of its back clear of the surrounding plants, while much of its body remains partly hidden. It occupies only a small area of the frame, so finding it is part of the experience of looking at the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the floating leaves prominent rather than cropping tightly around the animal. Their small rounded shapes overlap in different directions, with dark water visible in the gaps. Some leaves are bright green, others are more olive, and a few carry warmer brown tones or irregular marks. I like how those changes make the setting detailed without giving it a single dominant shape. Against that pattern, the frog’s eye, head and longer back become easier to distinguish.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe colour connects the frog to its surroundings even as the yellow sets it apart. Darker markings along its back sit beside the shadows between the leaves, while the brighter head catches the eye first. I wanted to preserve that balance between a clear wildlife subject and the pond surface around it. The photograph stays close enough to retain the frog’s details, but the larger field of leaves remains important. Pale vertical marks cross the side of the neck, while repeated white shapes cover the darker back. Finer lines appear on the chest, changing the scale of the pattern from one part of the bird to another. I find that those details hold attention after the eye and bill have been noticed. Small droplets on the head and bill add to the close view without becoming a separate subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe surrounding water is blue and green, with ripples near the body and a softer surface farther behind it. That background keeps the bird connected to the lake while allowing the head to remain distinct. My photograph uses colour for the eye and water, but much of the loon’s visible character comes from its dark and pale feathers. Individual hairs catch the light across the forehead and cheeks. The dark eye patches frame the eyes, while the black paws introduce a much denser texture lower in the photograph. A few slender leaves appear close to the raised paw.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eColour keeps the pale fur warm and the background foliage green. Those quieter hues soften the contrast between the dark and light areas, so the portrait remains detailed rather than becoming a simple graphic pattern.
