The bridge begins high above me, cuts diagonally across the photograph and stretches toward the Sydney skyline on the opposite side of the harbour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was 2016, during blue hour, when the city lights were beginning to appear but there was still enough colour left in the sky. Deep blue fills most of the frame, while the last sunset light burns orange, pink and violet along the horizon. Beneath it, Sydney Harbour settles into cooler tones and the illuminated buildings on the left begin to define the city after dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the contrast in scale. The skyline appears relatively small beneath the immense lattice of steel overhead. Individual lights along the bridge create tiny points of warmth within the dark structure, while the open sky on the left gives all that weight somewhere to breathe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSydney Harbour Bridge is one of those landmarks that has been photographed countless times, so I was less interested in simply recording what it looked like. I wanted to find a viewpoint where its engineering, mass and geometry became the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the sunset completed it. I wanted enough distance from the city to let those individual structures separate rather than collapse into one dense mass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water became an important part of the composition. It creates space across the foreground and allows the skyline to sit comfortably beneath an enormous Western Australian sky. The clear blue light gives the photograph a completely different character from the dense urban scenes I often photograph at street level.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also liked the mixture of architecture. Tall commercial towers dominate the centre, while lower waterfront buildings, public spaces and the sculptural forms around Elizabeth Quay soften the transition between the city and the river. On the right, the warmer brick architecture provides a visual counterpoint to all the glass and steel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePerth struck me as a city where the relationship between downtown and the water is difficult to separate. Standing here, both were part of the same scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to photograph—not simply a collection of skyscrapers, but the wider shape of Perth itself. The architecture stopped reading as a structure and became a pattern.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRows of angular panels repeat across the facade, getting progressively smaller as they climb toward the top of the frame. In black and white, the geometry becomes even more pronounced. Bright triangular surfaces sit beside deep shadows, while the windows and structural lines underneath add another layer of repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI deliberately left a large area of clean white sky above the building. That open space gives the dense pattern somewhere to go and exaggerates the sense that the facade is continuing upward almost indefinitely. The perspective also changes the scale. Forms that appear large and heavy near the bottom become smaller, tighter and more abstract as they recede.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the kind of architectural photography I enjoy most. I am not simply recording what a building looks like. I am looking for the smaller visual relationships hidden inside it — rhythm, repetition, contrast, angles and the way perspective can transform something familiar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePhotographed in Adelaide, Australia, the scene becomes less about a particular piece of architecture and more about shape and structure. That change in tone gives it volume as it sweeps through the upper frame. Small triangular cable connections repeat along the curve, creating a sequence of details within the larger form.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBehind it, a second arch rises from lower in the composition. Its position introduces another direction, while the cables draw long diagonals across both the structure and the sky. I like how those slender lines remain delicate beside the substantial curved metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eClouds give the background a soft range of greys. They provide enough variation to keep the open areas alive without competing with the bridge. In monochrome, the bright surfaces, dark edges and fine lines each have a clear role.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis view reduces a Perth landmark to a few strong architectural relationships: curves, diagonals, repetition and empty space. The bridge remains identifiable, but the photograph also works as a study of modern design. Along Western Australia’s Tin Horse Highway, this barrel-bodied horse appears to fly straight out into the blue sky. I was heading towards Wave Rock when it stopped me, and the unexpected sight became one of my favourite roadside encounters from that trip.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIts stretched-out legs, oversized head and yellow chain mane give it a wonderfully improvised character. The rounded metal body retains the shape of the barrels, while smaller pieces become ears, hooves and facial details. A red-painted cap and blue markings add just enough colour to make the face stand apart from the pale metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe sculpture is supported by a tall blue pole, clearly visible beneath it. That practical detail does not spoil the illusion for me. It becomes part of the joke: a homemade horse suspended above the ground, committed to its unlikely flight.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI framed it against the sky, leaving the surrounding landscape out of the photograph. The open blue background gives the extended legs plenty of room and makes the assembled shapes easy to read. A little wispy cloud behind the head keeps the setting natural without distracting from the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis photograph carries the humour that drew me to the Tin Horse Highway in the first place. I photographed it in 2016. Triangular panes repeat across the facade, growing smaller as they climb toward the curved upper edge. The revolving door sits at the base, giving the much larger pattern a clear point of reference.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe entrance is framed by two broad dark slopes joined above the door. Their simple outline contrasts with the finer network of diagonal lines surrounding them. I like how that larger shape creates a pause within the busy surface, allowing the doorway to remain easy to find.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbove it, the repeated triangles change character with height. Lower panes hold reflections of nearby structures and the outside space. Higher up, pale glass and dark projecting edges create a more regular pattern of light and shadow. Toward the sides, the angled elements appear denser, emphasizing the curve of the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe vertical composition makes that progression part of the experience. My eye begins at the door, follows the grid upward, then moves outward across the repeating forms. A narrow area of pale sky leaves the top outline distinct, while the pavement below offers a simpler surface beneath the architecture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white gives the photograph a strong graphic quality. Glass, diagonal framing and shaded edges remain separate through tone, even where the pattern becomes tight. This 2016 photograph brings that relationship close. A broad, layered formation occupies the right side, while smaller pinnacles extend into the open desert on the left.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe largest rock has an uneven upper edge and long bands running across its face. Light makes the ridges bright and leaves narrow shadows below them, giving the surface a strongly horizontal pattern. Those lines continue toward the right edge of the photograph, where the formation is cut by the frame. I like how its substantial presence balances the much smaller shapes scattered farther away.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGolden sand covers the foreground and reaches toward a low horizon. Small ripples and shallow grooves break up the nearest slope, with a few sparse plants adding darker details. The ground curves around the base of the rock and opens out on the left. That space makes it possible to read the photograph as both a close surface study and a wider desert landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbove it all, a clear blue sky provides a simple colour contrast. The warmth of the ground is particularly noticeable against that broad cool area, and the absence of clouds keeps the rock’s outline distinct. This view of Nambung National Park holds my attention through its combination of shape, texture and uncomplicated colour.
