A blue station wagon fills the foreground while an open-top classic car travels ahead, its passengers visible above the deep red bodywork. Another old car appears farther down the street. Together they lead my eye directly into the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is how naturally these remarkable vehicles fit into the scene. In almost any other city, a car like this would attract attention at a show or sit polished in someone's collection. In Havana, these aging American cars are woven into everyday life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture matters just as much. Tall, weathered buildings press closely against the narrow street. Balconies, old stonework, barred windows, overhead wires and traditional street lamps surround the cars. Nothing feels staged or arranged for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like the restrained color in this photograph. The faded blue of the station wagon and the dark red convertible stand apart from the pale, timeworn buildings without overpowering them. The cars provide the color; Havana provides the texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about photographing Cuba. History never seemed confined to museums or monuments. This one is about what time did to a very small part of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this old automobile at a vintage car exhibition in Los Angeles, but I was far more interested in getting close than making a conventional photograph of the vehicle. The door had become its own landscape. Cobwebs stretched across the window and chrome. Paint had cracked and separated. Scratches, dust and years of deterioration covered surfaces that were once polished and carefully maintained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe old door handle became the centre of the photograph. Its chrome was damaged and dull, yet enough of the original shape remained to suggest the styling and craftsmanship of another era.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the detail in black and white because colour seemed unnecessary. What interested me were the textures—the fractured paint, strands of webbing, worn metal, curved trim and deep shadows. Up close, the automobile almost disappears and the photograph becomes something more abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to things that show their age rather than hide it. It sits prominently inside this abandoned Dodge truck cab, surrounded by a dashboard that has been partly stripped and slowly encroached upon by the woods outside.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005, framing the interior through the open side of the cab rather than standing back to show the entire truck. That closer viewpoint turned the driver's space into the subject. The thin steering wheel, long gear lever, old instrument cluster, worn bench seat, peeling surfaces, and branches reaching into the cab carry the story on their own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for the scene because so much of the photograph is about shape, texture, and deterioration. The sweeping curve of the door frame becomes a border around the interior, while the bright forest beyond the windshield pushes against the dark dashboard and steering column. Nature is visible through every opening, but it is also beginning to move inside.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most is not simply that the Dodge was abandoned. It is the strange intimacy of seeing a machine from the driver's position after its working life has ended. The controls remain recognizable. The seat is still there. Yet the cab has become part vehicle, part woodland debris. This old Chevrolet was one of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found the weathered truck near Zion National Park, sitting beneath an extraordinary Utah sky as the last light spread pink, violet and orange across the horizon. The truck had everything I look for in an old vehicle—faded turquoise paint, exposed rust, dents, worn chrome and the kind of patina that cannot be manufactured convincingly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chevrolet 3100 badge remains visible on the side, while the broad grille and rounded fenders immediately place the truck in another era. A spare tire rests against the side, and behind it the Sinclair sign introduces another piece of roadside Americana. Beyond that, the desert cliffs rise from the landscape, catching just enough remaining light to separate them from the evening sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat made me stop, though, was the combination of the truck and the sunset. Either subject could have carried a photograph on its own. Together they created something much more evocative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to vehicles that show their age honestly. Perfect restorations can be beautiful, but this truck had history written across every surface. A large black classic car had stopped in front of me, its polished body reflecting the bright tropical sky, while another vintage automobile edged into the frame from the left. Beyond them, the dome and long columned facade of El Capitolio rise above the traffic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat layering is what interested me. Havana's old American cars are photographed constantly, and El Capitolio is one of the city's best-known landmarks, but here the two subjects occupy the same everyday street scene rather than feeling separated into tourist icons. Traffic lights, pedestrians, palm trees and additional cars across the road keep the photograph grounded in the city around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also liked the muted colour. The black car dominates the lower half of the image, while pale stone, soft sky tones and restrained greens keep attention on shape and architecture. The Cuban license plate, chrome trim and distinctive rear fins add small details that reward a closer look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, Havana is often most interesting when several parts of its identity collide in one frame. I found this scene while travelling the side roads and minor highways of the southern United States, where a cluster of old wooden buildings and discarded vehicles had slowly become part of the rural landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe GMC tow truck in the foreground immediately caught my attention. Its body is worn and faded, with the towing rig still rising behind it, while two smaller damaged vehicles sit close beside it. Farther back, another old truck is tucked beneath a simple roof beside a weathered wooden building. Nothing in the scene feels arranged. The vehicles, sheds, trees and rough ground have simply accumulated into a picture of use, neglect and passing years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was not what interested me here. The photograph is really about texture: aged boards, corrugated roofs, worn metal, grass and the dense canopy of trees surrounding everything. Removing the colour lets those surfaces and shapes carry more of the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the relationship between the vehicles and the buildings. Neither feels separate from the other. Together they suggest a rural working place that has changed gradually, leaving older machines and structures behind rather than clearing them away. I like the balance between those straight architectural lines and the familiar curves of the Beetle.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe closed storefronts and graffiti keep the scene rooted in a working street rather than an idealised view of Barcelona. There are other traces of daily use, but no crowd competing with the car. The rounded roof, open window spaces and remaining panels hold together as a single subject, while fallen bodywork sits lower in the foreground. There is very little shine left. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open. What I wanted to hold onto was the encounter itself: an old machine still visibly present in a place where weather and time have changed it. As wall art, it can suit someone interested in vintage vehicles, abandoned places or rustic photography. Rusty orange and traces of faded green appear on the truck, with a warmer tone at the wheel. The barn is largely grey, so its red window trim becomes a clear accent. Along the ground, a thin remnant of snow separates the wall from the brown earth.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI am interested in how these different kinds of wear sit together. The shingles retain their repeated pattern even as their surfaces weather; the truck has lost parts but still has a recognisable outline. The photograph allows both to remain visible without turning the scene into a list of damaged details. The truck fills the left side; the stone-faced building sits farther back on the right. Between them, the front wheel, parking lines, and pavement lead into the distance. An antenna rises through the sky, balancing the heavier shapes below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWorking in monochrome puts the emphasis on those relationships. In black and white, the fork and front wheel become the strongest shapes. The round headlight sits high in the frame, while the wheel’s fine spokes spread across the lower corner. Between them, the tank and engine slip into softer shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe midday light was harsh, which suited the worn surfaces. Bright edges on the metal sit against deep blacks, making the mechanical details clear without turning the photograph into a complete inventory of the bike. The blur behind it also matters: the setting remains a street, but it does not compete with the motorcycle.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the coexistence of wear and continued use. I could see the condition of the bike and the fact that it was secured, but not the owner’s story. The photograph leaves that space open. Those pieces help enclose the more intricate details inside, while reflections in the polished surfaces add small changes of light and colour.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, this interior holds much of the appeal of classic car culture: a practical space made visually distinctive through colour, proportion, and detail. The photograph does not need a full view of the convertible to communicate that character. A close look at the wheel, gauges, and trim is enough. I like how the surviving design lines remain clear even where the finish has deteriorated. The car’s shape and its condition are both visible at once.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKeeping the composition tight makes the different textures easier to compare. Glass, metal trim, faded paint, and the worn lower edge respond differently to the light. Small bright patches draw attention across the hood, while deeper shadows around the wheel give the lower part of the picture weight. This photograph records the car as I encountered it in 2011. I do not know its earlier journeys or the circumstances in which it was left; the image stays with what remained in front of the camera.
