Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. The largest formation dominates the right side of the frame, while smaller towers and fragments lead the eye across the water toward the distant mountains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat transformed the scene for me was the light. Soft pink and orange reached the mountain peaks while cooler blues remained across the lake and lower landscape. Above everything, heavy clouds caught traces of the same pastel colour. For a few minutes, warm and cool tones existed together without either one overwhelming the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe still water was equally important. Reflections beneath the tufa formations extend their shapes downward and create a visual balance between the rugged rock and the smooth surface of Mono Lake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been attracted to landscapes that feel slightly unfamiliar, and the tufa towers give Mono Lake that quality immediately. They look sculptural, almost improbable, particularly when separated by quiet water and viewed against the mountains beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph is about that combination: unusual geology, open water, distant mountains and the fleeting colour of sunrise. The landscape already had everything it needed. The pale beach below gives the eye a quieter area after all that detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA soft, clouded sky keeps the top of the photograph restrained. Against it, the lighthouse is easy to find, but it remains secondary to the land around it. That relationship was central to my framing: the tower helps identify the place, while the clay cliffs provide the image’s colour and scale. This print offers a Martha’s Vineyard landscape with a strong natural palette, suited to someone drawn to coastal geology, island travel, or warmer earth tones. One fold rises sharply, another rounds off, and a darker strip follows the slope before vanishing behind the next formation. I like tracing those changes through the image. Its dark contours and small areas of yellow stand out because so much of the surrounding surface is pale and subdued. Parts of the portrait have faded into the wall, leaving the expression fragmented. That partial visibility is what first drew me to it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOther marks cross and surround the image: red strokes above the forehead, black lettering to the side, and faint shapes near the ground. A long horizontal band runs behind the portrait, while cracks travel down through the plaster. I see these as layers within the photograph rather than clues to an account I can confidently reconstruct.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKeeping a wider portion of the wall in view gives the face its particular presence. It appears within the street’s worn surfaces, not as a cleanly separated artwork. The restrained cream and grey tones make the yellow feel more concentrated, and the texture remains readable across the frame. The contrast lets the architecture remain full of detail without filling every part of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn the right, a broad pale wall carries an irregular pattern of lighter and darker surfaces. Small windows, an arched opening and a short line of laundry interrupt it. Farther along the row, the buildings become narrower, with more ornament around their windows and balconies. I like the changes from one facade to the next. The light touches their fronts, while recesses and doorways provide darker marks within the warmer tones. Streetlamps repeat along the pavement and give the row another line to follow into the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the road in the foreground because it allows the buildings to stand back from the camera. A small car and people along the pavement add a sense of scale, but the facades remain the focus. When I made the photograph, I was interested in the meeting of different surfaces and styles along the waterfront. Looking at it now, the colour is as much about the light as the paint: soft yellows and muted greens sit beside exposed, weathered areas, all gathered beneath the open sky. Its warm tones sit close to those of the dunes, but the darker areas within the moving sand make the trail distinct.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA tall red flag reaches above the vehicle into the sky. It adds a small, strong note of colour and a vertical line to a scene built mostly from horizontal dunes and spreading motion. The riders remain within the frame, but their expressions are less important to the photograph than the way the vehicle occupies the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI wanted the image to hold this brief burst of movement within a larger, open view. The distant dunes are smooth and relatively quiet, while the foreground is full of displaced sand and changing shapes. That difference gives the photograph its energy. Their narrow horizontal slats contrast with the wall’s much less even surface. Areas of plaster have worn away to reveal brickwork, and the different tones around the opening make its edges easy to follow. The sill carries another small band of texture beneath the pots.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbove the window, curved roof tiles overlap in repeated rows. Some retain warmer reddish tones, while others have darker surfaces and green patches of growth. I kept that portion of the roof in the photograph because it gives the window a wider architectural setting. The gutter forms a horizontal division between the tiles and the wall below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the appeal lies in the meeting of these larger repeated forms and the small, individual plants. The shutters and tiles give the image order; the pots interrupt it with different shapes and fresh green colour. The interior stays in shadow, allowing the sill and surrounding surfaces to remain the focus. Some are pale, others have warmer marks, and the joints between them form an irregular network across the façade. Small green plants grow along the lower wall. The detached pale panels rest nearby, their peeling surfaces adding another kind of texture beside the stone and shutters still in place.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI wanted the photograph to stay with what was visible in front of me. The building’s full story was not available, but its surfaces offered plenty to notice.
