A small wooden door sat buried inside weathered stone, but what interested me was how completely the trees had begun to take over. Thick roots dropped from above, twisted across the wall and gathered around the doorway until architecture and vegetation seemed inseparable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed it in black and white because colour was not what held the scene together. It was texture, shadow and shape. The rough masonry, dark bark, fallen leaves and battered door all occupied nearly the same tonal world, which made the roots feel even more dominant. They do not simply frame the entrance; they seem to press against it from every direction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged. I did not move branches, clear leaves or try to make the doorway more visible. Its partial concealment was the reason I stopped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat stays with me is the tension between something built to endure and something growing without any concern for the structure around it. A fortress suggests permanence, strength and control. The roots suggest the opposite—slow, persistent change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHavana is full of layers, but this was one of the quieter ones. No crowd, no traffic, no obvious landmark announcing itself. Just an old door, heavy stone and trees steadily changing the wall around them. Clusters of needles mark the finer limbs, leaving gaps through which the sky remains visible. Below the tree, the rock face is dark and uneven, with layered edges that catch just enough light to show their texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the cliff along one side rather than allowing it to fill the view. That choice leaves a broad area of blue around the tree and separates its many small lines from the heavier shapes of the stone. I photographed it near my Haliburton studio in 2007, drawn to the roots spreading across a wet granite wall. This black and white forest photograph brings the Canadian Shield into close view, where the grain of weathered wood meets the rough surface of stone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe tree had died long before I arrived. What remained was enough to hold my attention: a pale trunk rising out of the frame, roots reaching sideways, and dark rock filling the space around them. The close composition lets those shapes carry the photograph without a distant landscape competing for attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI was also interested in the marks carved into the stump. They introduce a human trace into a scene shaped by the forest, adding another kind of weathering to the wood. The contrast between those small marks and the broad, uneven granite is part of what keeps me looking.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLight catches the trunk and roots while the damp rock settles into deeper tones. That range gives the image its weight, but the branching lines keep it moving. I photographed the wetland bordering Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada, where water lilies had spread across much of the surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe log is rough and weathered, with small plants growing along parts of it. Its grey-brown colour provides a break in the green, but it remains closely connected to the surrounding vegetation. The lily pads gather densely on either side, their rounded shapes overlapping into a fine pattern. In the clearer gaps, dark water gives individual leaves a sharper outline.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the view close enough that the pond becomes an arrangement of texture and direction. The long piece of wood provides a firm line through all the smaller forms, while upright plants near the bank introduce a different kind of growth. Brighter leaves fill the lower portion of the frame; toward the top, the water and reflections make the pattern less continuous.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph works through that balance of abundance and structure. There is a great deal to look at, but the diagonal log prevents the scene from becoming visually scattered. I wanted enough of the tree in the image to show how the separate details belong to one continuous form.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSnow provides a quieter surface around it. Small stones and patches of earth break through the white ground, while darker trees in the background give the pale trunk a clearer outline. The warm wood stands out gently against that cooler setting. This photograph is a study of an ancient tree’s visible character, made in the place where it grows. That movement is held here in their varied angles and gently bowed heads. Although the field was golden, I chose black and white to concentrate on its structure. Pale grain stands out against the darker gaps between stems, creating depth within a scene that might at first seem almost flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe closer I look, the less uniform the pattern becomes. Some heads turn sideways, others hang low, and thin strands cross the upright lines of the stalks. Those differences keep the repetition lively.
