Tall windows have been patched with mismatched pieces of wood, paint has faded into layers of yellow and green, and laundry hangs openly across the upper floor. Then, at precisely the right moment, a man on a bicycle entered the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small figure changed the photograph for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis red shirt immediately separates him from the muted colors of the building, while the bicycle gives movement to an otherwise completely static facade. He is dwarfed by the architecture behind him, yet my eye goes directly to him. Without the cyclist, I would have a photograph about an aging Havana building. With him, it becomes a photograph about life continuing around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like the contrast between the grandeur the building must once have possessed and the way it is being lived in now. Ornamental columns and decorative details remain, but so do crumbling plaster, boarded windows, exposed masonry and improvised repairs. Laundry hanging above the street makes the building feel inhabited rather than abandoned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are the scenes that keep drawing me back to street photography. I can find the location and recognize the possibilities, but I can't manufacture the moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture gave me the setting. Havana gave me the color and texture. Roofs, chimneys, trees, narrow gaps between houses, and the steep hillside all crowd into the frame, creating the feeling of a city built in layers over a long period of time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subdued light is important here. There is no dramatic sunset and no bright blue sky competing with the architecture. Instead, the muted atmosphere lets the warm roof tiles, dark stone, and soft greens of the hillside settle into one restrained palette. The clock face and tower become natural points of focus without needing to be exaggerated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Black Church is one of Brasov’s defining landmarks, but I wanted the photograph to show more than the building alone. By keeping the surrounding rooftops and mountain in the composition, I could place it within the city rather than separate it from the place that gives it context. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. The sun has pulled warm oranges, browns and silvers from the aged boards, while the pale grass spreads across the foreground and into the distance. Utility poles remain standing beside the buildings, adding another vertical rhythm to a place where almost everything else feels as though it is slowly returning to the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is the sky. It occupies nearly half the frame—clean blue broken by brilliant white clouds—and gives the photograph an openness that contrasts with the worn structures below. Instead of making the scene feel gloomy, the light exposes every crack, warped board and rough surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGhost towns fascinate me because they leave so much visible without explaining everything. I can walk through a place like this and see evidence of ordinary lives everywhere, yet the people themselves are gone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to hold onto here. Not simply an old building or wagon, but the peculiar stillness of a town that once had purpose and activity. The objects remain. The landscape remains. Standing inside Fort Jefferson, I was drawn immediately to the way one brick opening framed the next, then the next, until the entire corridor collapsed into a tiny dark point in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat repetition is what makes the photograph work for me. The first arch is massive and heavy, filling most of the frame, yet every opening beyond it becomes progressively smaller. The eye has nowhere else to go. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colour was equally important. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. Light entering the corridor catches certain surfaces while others fall into shadow, giving each successive arch its own subtle separation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often photograph architecture for exactly this reason. A structure can become something entirely different when I stop looking at the whole building and concentrate on one repeating element. Its weathered wooden facade, narrow pointed windows and small bell tower have a simplicity that feels almost severe, particularly beneath the enormous blue sky surrounding Bodie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this building in 2009 while exploring the preserved ghost town. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. Small painted tiles sit against a practical fence, carrying symbols, colours and messages that differ from one piece to the next. Some are immediately visible; others are partly lost in the dimmer areas. Together they form a public memorial with a very personal texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI framed the scene around the overhead light rather than trying to make every tile equally clear. Its warm glow gives the central lettering a place to settle, while the darker edges leave room for the eye to explore more slowly. The fence’s repeated diamond pattern connects the separate pieces without erasing their differences.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph holds an understated kind of remembrance. The materials are ordinary, but the care in the individual tiles gives them significance. I wanted to preserve that human scale in the image, alongside the rough wall and the shadows around it. As wall art, it may speak to someone connected to New York or interested in memorial photography and community-made public art. The rounded roof, open window spaces and remaining panels hold together as a single subject, while fallen bodywork sits lower in the foreground. There is very little shine left. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open. What I wanted to hold onto was the encounter itself: an old machine still visibly present in a place where weather and time have changed it. As wall art, it can suit someone interested in vintage vehicles, abandoned places or rustic photography. Beneath it, an old radiator sits close to the wall, while the chair occupies a brighter patch farther into the space. Around those recognisable objects, broken material gathers on the floor and larger areas of plaster have fallen away. I like how the light reveals the room without removing its shadows.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe composition depends on that contrast. The window is bright, the far corner dark, and the chair sits between them with a narrow outline. Exposed brick adds a regular pattern on one side, while the damaged ceiling and walls introduce rougher shapes. Those surfaces keep the eye moving through a room that otherwise feels still.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph leaves the room’s earlier life open to reflection. I wanted to record what was visible rather than supply a story for the person who might once have used it. Rather than showing the monastery as a whole, I chose to concentrate on a fragment of its wall. The close view gives equal attention to the original painted detail and the marks that sit across it. I like how the repeated structure makes the room easy to read at first, then allows its variations to appear. No two sections have quite the same colour or surface.
