This black and white Dubrovnik photography print frames the Church of St Blaise among layered Old Town rooftops. Its rounded dome and detailed stone facade make a distinctive Croatian architectural wall art accent.
From high on Dubrovnik’s city walls, I photographed the Church of St Blaise among the closely layered roofs of the Old Town. Its rounded dome rises above the carved façade, giving the black and white composition a clear centre. Late afternoon light brought out the stonework and tiles without separating the church from the buildings around it.
The dome’s curved surface contrasts with the sloping rooflines that cross the foreground and continue behind it. Statues stand along the church’s upper façade, where broad arches and a balustrade add smaller variations to the stone. The surrounding buildings repeat windows, roof tiles, and chimneys at different heights. Looking down compresses those layers, allowing one roof edge to lead toward another and keeping the church closely connected to the town.
Earlier that day, I had walked through the streets below, hearing footsteps echo in the narrow alleys and noticing the sea air drifting from the harbour. By the time I reached this viewpoint, the crowds had thinned and I could spend more time looking across the roofs. I made the photograph in 2020, keeping the frame close enough for architectural details to remain visible. Monochrome lets the dome, carved stone, and repeated tiles share a consistent range of tones. For me, the image carries the experience of moving through Dubrovnik at street level and then seeing its structures gathered from above, a familiar place revealing a different arrangement.
