The lake was almost perfectly still, turning the abandoned ship and its towering masts into a reflection beneath a sky filled with gold, amber and orange.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ship is La Grande Hermine, but what interested me photographically wasn't simply its name or history. It was the extraordinary contrast between decay and beauty. The hull is weathered and deteriorating, sections of the old vessel have fallen away, and the bare masts and rigging reach into the sky without sails. Yet on this particular morning, the sunrise transformed everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI positioned myself low and close to the shoreline, allowing the ship to dominate the frame while still leaving room for the glowing sky and open water. The masts create strong geometric lines overhead, while their reflections stretch downward into the lake. Even the surrounding trees seem to frame the wreck, separating its dark, aging structure from the intense light behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something fascinating to me about objects that have outlived their original purpose. This ship was built to move through water, yet now it sits permanently grounded and slowly changing with time and weather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2019, but the scene itself felt strangely outside of time. I am drawn to surfaces that have accumulated years of weather, repairs, marks and human contact—the kind of wall that becomes more interesting the longer I stand in front of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this one in southern India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA small wooden door sits almost unexpectedly within an enormous weathered wall. At first the scene seems overwhelmingly blue, but the closer I looked, the more colors began to emerge. Violet and faded red remain in the door. Pale markings and scratched graffiti wander across the wall. Stains run vertically through the surface, while patches of old paint reveal layer after layer underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is that tiny plant growing directly beneath the doorway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love details like that. Against this massive, scarred surface, a few green leaves introduce something alive and temporary. The door itself feels almost absorbed into the wall, as though both have been aging together for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene straight on because I wanted very little interpretation between me and what I had found. The wall becomes the composition. Texture, color, scratches, stains and imperfections become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing India so much. Extraordinary photographs don't always announce themselves. Long ribbons of white, gold and red stretch across the River Liffey, turning the dark water into something far more luminous than the city above it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph looking along the river through central Dublin, with the city still caught between night and morning. A deep blue sky hangs over the buildings while streetlights trace both banks of the Liffey. The river becomes the centre of everything, gathering those lights and pulling them downward into elongated reflections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the symmetry without everything being perfectly symmetrical. Buildings line both sides of the water, bridges draw the eye toward the centre, and the river creates a strong visual path through the city. Yet every reflection behaves differently. Some are narrow and precise; others dissolve into broad strokes of light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe quietness of the scene matters to me as much as the colour. Dublin is a busy city, but at this hour it feels unusually still. The architecture remains present without overwhelming the river, while the saturated blue overhead gives the warmer lights along the streets an almost theatrical contrast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always liked photographing cities when their familiar character changes for a few minutes. Here, the River Liffey is not simply running through Dublin. Not the whole train, not the landscape around it, but this tight section of green and yellow metal with its repeating vents, hinges, handles and years of wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this train in Coonoor, India, in 2009 while travelling through the Nilgiri Hills. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the defining sights of the region, but I was more interested here in moving closer and isolating a small piece of the carriage. Once separated from the rest of the train, the surface becomes almost abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe saturated green dominates the frame, interrupted by a single horizontal band of yellow running through the centre. Rows of louvred panels repeat across the metalwork, creating a strong pattern, while chipped paint, scratches and uneven surfaces prevent the geometry from becoming too perfect. Those small imperfections are important to me. They give the photograph its character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often find that the most memorable part of a place is not necessarily the grand view. Sometimes it is a colour, a texture or an ordinary detail that becomes far more interesting when removed from its surroundings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what happened here. Route 501 Long Branch is visible across the destination sign, along with streetcar number 4214, giving the photograph a very specific Toronto identity. Behind it, a taxi, pedestrians, towers and storefronts remain present, but the motion blur turns them into fragments of the city rather than competing subjects.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me here is the contrast between detail and movement. The streetcar doors, windows, mirrors and front lights remain strong enough to hold the eye, while the streetscape rushes outward toward the edges of the frame. Even the architecture begins to lose its solidity. Toronto becomes less about individual buildings and more about speed, congestion and constant movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red of the streetcar carries through the softer colours around it, making the vehicle feel almost suspended inside the blur.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always liked photographs that show familiar places differently. A Toronto streetcar is an everyday sight, something thousands of people pass without thinking about it. The truck had everything I look for in an old vehicle—faded turquoise paint, exposed rust, dents, worn chrome and the kind of patina that cannot be manufactured convincingly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chevrolet 3100 badge remains visible on the side, while the broad grille and rounded fenders immediately place the truck in another era. A spare tire rests against the side, and behind it the Sinclair sign introduces another piece of roadside Americana. Beyond that, the desert cliffs rise from the landscape, catching just enough remaining light to separate them from the evening sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat made me stop, though, was the combination of the truck and the sunset. Either subject could have carried a photograph on its own. Together they created something much more evocative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to vehicles that show their age honestly. Perfect restorations can be beautiful, but this truck had history written across every surface. The bridge begins high above me, cuts diagonally across the photograph and stretches toward the Sydney skyline on the opposite side of the harbour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was 2016, during blue hour, when the city lights were beginning to appear but there was still enough colour left in the sky. Deep blue fills most of the frame, while the last sunset light burns orange, pink and violet along the horizon. Beneath it, Sydney Harbour settles into cooler tones and the illuminated buildings on the left begin to define the city after dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the contrast in scale. The skyline appears relatively small beneath the immense lattice of steel overhead. Individual lights along the bridge create tiny points of warmth within the dark structure, while the open sky on the left gives all that weight somewhere to breathe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSydney Harbour Bridge is one of those landmarks that has been photographed countless times, so I was less interested in simply recording what it looked like. I wanted to find a viewpoint where its engineering, mass and geometry became the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the sunset completed it. That was what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was walking along the river in Chengdu just after dusk when the lights of Anshun Bridge came on and suddenly the entire structure appeared twice—once above the water and again in an unusually clear reflection below it. I had not planned the photograph or scouted the location. The scene simply came together in front of me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat fascinated me was the contrast. The bridge glows in warm amber light, its traditional Chinese rooflines and sweeping arches standing against modern high-rise buildings and the deep blue evening sky. Below, the calm water turns the arches into complete circles, creating a strong geometric rhythm across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition straightforward because there was very little I wanted to interfere with. The bridge already carried the photograph. Its reflection added symmetry, while the surrounding towers introduced a second layer—the contemporary city rising behind architecture that speaks to a much older visual tradition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2015, and what stays with me is how briefly everything aligned. Water this calm does not remain that way for long. A breeze, passing boat or changing light could have broken the reflection completely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a few minutes, though, Chengdu seemed to pause. From a distance, the individual buildings almost disappear into one enormous pattern of colour, repetition and density.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat visual compression is what fascinated me. There is barely any empty space. One structure sits above another, then another, climbing relentlessly across the hillside. Most share the same deep red and brown tones, but small flashes of green, turquoise, yellow and brighter crimson appear in windows, doors and fabric, breaking up the repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scale is difficult to understand until I start looking closely. Every small rectangle is a home. Paths wind between them, buildings lean into the contours of the land, and the settlement seems to have grown organically rather than according to any simple grid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLarung Gar sits at roughly 12,500 feet, and its isolation was part of what made being there so memorable for me. Yet photographically, I kept returning to the visual structure of the place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the frame to feel almost overwhelming—to let the homes fill it completely, without sky or distant landscape providing relief. For me, that density is the photograph. A vintage car sits above the salon, Route 66 shields appear across the facade, and an old Route 66 Grill sign still stands beside the neighbouring building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eColour is a huge part of the photograph. The salon is painted in soft pink, cream and yellow, with bright magenta and green stripes running across the front. Next door, turquoise trim and faded peach walls add another layer of Southwestern character. All of it sits beneath an enormous, intensely blue Arizona sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep the wider street scene rather than isolate a single sign or detail. The empty road, chain-link fence, old vehicles, weathered signage and trees behind the buildings help place the salon within the slightly improvised visual language of historic Route 66.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what has always interested me about this highway. The attraction is not one particular landmark. It is the accumulation of diners, garages, motels, old cars, handmade signs and businesses that developed their own personalities to catch the attention of passing travellers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDeSoto's Salon had that personality in abundance. The immense central dome anchors the scene, while four slender minarets climb into a warm evening sky. Their amber lighting separates them from the deepening shadows below and gives the entire structure a remarkable presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept a generous amount of sky in the composition because its colour mattered. Soft orange and brown tones spread across the upper half of the frame, creating a restrained backdrop rather than competing with the architecture. Below, the modern city remains visible in layers of rooftops, windows and scattered lights, giving the mosque both scale and context.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was that relationship between the monumental and the everyday. The mosque dominates the skyline, yet it is still embedded within the dense fabric of Istanbul rather than standing apart from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDusk is often when a city changes character most quickly. Its thin rim surrounds polished metal spokes, with the instrument cluster just beyond it. The dash has its own rounded forms, including the arched arrangement of the gauges. Together, those shapes make the interior feel carefully composed before the camera is even involved.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept part of the exterior door in the foreground, where a long chrome strip and handle provide a horizontal base. The upright window frame at the right adds another firm edge. Those pieces help enclose the more intricate details inside, while reflections in the polished surfaces add small changes of light and colour.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, this interior holds much of the appeal of classic car culture: a practical space made visually distinctive through colour, proportion, and detail. The photograph does not need a full view of the convertible to communicate that character. A close look at the wheel, gauges, and trim is enough. Straight edges appear to ripple, and repeated windows stretch into uneven shapes. Across that movement, the facade’s own grid remains visible. Fine dividing lines and a broad, steadier band through the middle hold the composition together, giving the eye a clear structure beneath the restless reflections. I like that tension: the building is orderly, yet the city it reflects seems to be shifting from one panel to the next.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe warm and cool colours give the photograph its energy. Yellow and orange surfaces glow against dark outlines, while blue sections offer pockets of depth along the edge. Smaller green and red areas interrupt the larger fields of colour, making the close view more intricate than it first appears. I chose to let those details fill the frame, without a street or skyline to explain the scene.
