Instead of everyone rushing through one of the busiest places in Manhattan, people simply sat down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is crowded, but it doesn't feel frantic. People lounge in folding chairs, talk, watch the street or simply sit by themselves. Behind them is unmistakable Times Square—yellow taxis, pedestrians, construction equipment, traffic lights, towering buildings and an almost absurd concentration of signs and advertising. Even the New York Police Department station is buried within the visual chaos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like photographs where there isn't necessarily one person who is the subject. Here, the people collectively become the subject. My eye can wander around the frame and discover dozens of small moments happening simultaneously.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph also has a personal connection for me. Later, during a workshop with legendary New York photographer Jay Maisel, I showed him this image. He stopped on it and commented on the uniqueness of the moment. That stayed with me because uniqueness is exactly what had made me raise my camera in the first place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTimes Square has been photographed millions of times. Finding a different photograph there is considerably harder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a brief period that summer, one of the world's most recognizable symbols of urban movement became somewhere people could simply pull up a chair and do absolutely nothing. The faded yellow wall is interrupted by remnants of turquoise paint and the deep red of the original window frame. Then the details begin to take over. Broken panes have been covered with mismatched pieces of wood. Sections of the wall have fallen away completely, exposing bricks and rough construction underneath. Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. Tall windows have been patched with mismatched pieces of wood, paint has faded into layers of yellow and green, and laundry hangs openly across the upper floor. Then, at precisely the right moment, a man on a bicycle entered the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small figure changed the photograph for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis red shirt immediately separates him from the muted colors of the building, while the bicycle gives movement to an otherwise completely static facade. He is dwarfed by the architecture behind him, yet my eye goes directly to him. Without the cyclist, I would have a photograph about an aging Havana building. With him, it becomes a photograph about life continuing around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like the contrast between the grandeur the building must once have possessed and the way it is being lived in now. Ornamental columns and decorative details remain, but so do crumbling plaster, boarded windows, exposed masonry and improvised repairs. Laundry hanging above the street makes the building feel inhabited rather than abandoned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are the scenes that keep drawing me back to street photography. I can find the location and recognize the possibilities, but I can't manufacture the moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture gave me the setting. Havana gave me the color and texture. It was completely out of place—a boat built for the water stranded inside an industrial building that was itself slowly falling apart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction made the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red paint had peeled away in long irregular streaks, exposing bare wood and traces of green underneath. Behind it, decades of wear had transformed the brick wall into layers of faded paint, stains and exposed masonry. Even the staircase seems to have become part of the decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition square and relatively tight because I wanted the boat and wall to become almost graphic. The diagonal of the hull cuts hard across the frame, while the staircase moves in the opposite direction. Against all those subdued browns, creams and grays, the remaining red paint refuses to disappear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this scene in 2006, not far from my studio in Ontario. I never learned how the boat ended up inside the factory, and I think I prefer not knowing. The mystery is part of what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph was later selected for publication in Black \u0026amp; White Magazine’s Colour Special Edition, which felt particularly appropriate. Color is essential here. Without that battered red hull, it simply wouldn't be the same photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSometimes the most interesting subjects aren't where they belong. Its massive stone walls and tall clock tower rise above a dense layer of tiled rooftops, while the forested mountain behind it compresses the scene and gives the architecture even more weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this view in 2011. What holds my attention is the relationship between the Black Church and everything surrounding it. The building is monumental, but it is not isolated. Roofs, chimneys, trees, narrow gaps between houses, and the steep hillside all crowd into the frame, creating the feeling of a city built in layers over a long period of time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subdued light is important here. There is no dramatic sunset and no bright blue sky competing with the architecture. Instead, the muted atmosphere lets the warm roof tiles, dark stone, and soft greens of the hillside settle into one restrained palette. The clock face and tower become natural points of focus without needing to be exaggerated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Black Church is one of Brasov’s defining landmarks, but I wanted the photograph to show more than the building alone. By keeping the surrounding rooftops and mountain in the composition, I could place it within the city rather than separate it from the place that gives it context. It cuts diagonally across the brick wall, dividing the photograph into a series of rough geometric shapes while the repeating steps pull the eye upward into the darker corner of the factory.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat caught me was the collision between order and decay. The stairs are rigid, functional and repetitive; everything around them is wearing away. Paint has peeled from the brickwork. Dark streaks run down the steps. Patches of warm brown, grey, faded white and ochre shift across the walls, revealing layer after layer of use and exposure. Even the vertical column near the centre seems to separate two different histories of the same interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned industrial spaces because they are full of compositions that were never designed to be photographs. Nothing here was arranged for appearance. The staircase existed simply to move people from one level to another, yet once the factory fell silent, its shape became the dominant visual element. The strong diagonal gives the scene movement, while the worn brick and stained surfaces slow the eye down and reward a closer look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2008. The fractures, ledges, stains, and mineral colour seem to break the painted marks apart, so the human gestures become part of the surface rather than a separate layer. Some words are still legible; others have faded into fragments. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. There was no dramatic sunset or brilliant colour competing with the landscape. Instead, the muted conditions allowed the shape of the mountains and the extraordinary path of the wall to become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStanding there, I was conscious of the enormous scale of what I was looking at. From a distance the Great Wall can appear almost delicate, a narrow line following the contours of the land, yet the closer sections reveal its physical weight and construction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast fascinated me. Human architecture occupies the landscape, but the mountains remain dominant. Utility poles remain standing beside the buildings, adding another vertical rhythm to a place where almost everything else feels as though it is slowly returning to the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is the sky. It occupies nearly half the frame—clean blue broken by brilliant white clouds—and gives the photograph an openness that contrasts with the worn structures below. The first arch is massive and heavy, filling most of the frame, yet every opening beyond it becomes progressively smaller. The eye has nowhere else to go. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colour was equally important. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. Light entering the corridor catches certain surfaces while others fall into shadow, giving each successive arch its own subtle separation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often photograph architecture for exactly this reason. A structure can become something entirely different when I stop looking at the whole building and concentrate on one repeating element. I made this photograph after dusk, when the intense Roman daylight had disappeared and the ancient stone was taking on a much darker, quieter character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was able to set up my tripod on the terrace of Colosso Metro Cafe in 2010. From that elevated position, the Colosseum sweeps across the right side of the frame, its repeating arches gradually disappearing into shadow. The open sky above it remains remarkably simple, filled with warm amber light that gives the entire scene an almost monochromatic quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the contrast between the scale of the structure and the small signs of contemporary Rome surrounding it. People gather near the base, the road crosses the foreground, and buildings rise in the distance, yet the Colosseum still overwhelms everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI deliberately allowed the mood to become darker than the familiar sunlit views of Rome. Deep shadows fill the arches, the weathered stone catches the remaining light, and the broad empty sky creates a sense of space around a monument normally surrounded by visual activity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat was the photograph I wanted—not simply a record of the Roman Colosseum, but a quieter view of it after the day had begun to disappear. From a distance, the individual buildings almost disappear into one enormous pattern of colour, repetition and density.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat visual compression is what fascinated me. There is barely any empty space. One structure sits above another, then another, climbing relentlessly across the hillside. Most share the same deep red and brown tones, but small flashes of green, turquoise, yellow and brighter crimson appear in windows, doors and fabric, breaking up the repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scale is difficult to understand until I start looking closely. Every small rectangle is a home. Paths wind between them, buildings lean into the contours of the land, and the settlement seems to have grown organically rather than according to any simple grid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLarung Gar sits at roughly 12,500 feet, and its isolation was part of what made being there so memorable for me. Yet photographically, I kept returning to the visual structure of the place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the frame to feel almost overwhelming—to let the homes fill it completely, without sky or distant landscape providing relief. For me, that density is the photograph. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. The scene has the density of a working city, but the relatively calm surface turns much of that activity into colour and distorted reflections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was particularly drawn to the large yellow building rising above the street. Its warm facade immediately separates it from the quieter stone buildings around it, and that same colour returns in the water beneath. Bare trees weave through the architecture, pedestrians move along the promenade, and dozens of modest boats create an irregular line between the city and the harbor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep all of those layers together. Moving closer to the architecture would have lost the boats; concentrating on the marina would have removed the character of Rijeka behind it. From this viewpoint, both belong to the same photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me about port cities is that their relationship with the water is visible everywhere. Streets, buildings, boats and daily life all meet at the shoreline.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, the reflections complete that connection. The architecture does not simply stop at the harbor's edge—it continues downward into the water, broken into long streaks of yellow, gray, blue and red. From there, it keeps moving into the distance, sometimes clearly defined and sometimes almost absorbed by the rocky landscape. That repetition is what holds the photograph together. Wall, tower, ridge. Then another wall, another tower, another rise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the scene was already largely about texture and structure. The stonework, bare vegetation and exposed rock all sit within a narrow tonal range, while the pale sky removes almost every distraction above the mountains. Without strong colour competing for attention, the shape of the Great Wall becomes much easier to follow through the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like that the photograph does not make the terrain look gentle. The walls climb steep slopes, drop into valleys and continue across uneven ground, which gives a much stronger sense of the relationship between the architecture and the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStanding there, that was what interested me most. The Great Wall of China is immediately recognizable, but from this viewpoint it becomes something more than a landmark. I noticed this window while walking through Brasov’s old town in Romania in 2011, and the scene revealed itself in that order. What looked at first like a photograph of a weathered facade became a small glimpse of life behind the glass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe window has a strong, simple structure: pale wooden frames, divided panes and a worn sill above a recessed panel of yellow plaster. Inside, lace curtains soften those straight lines. A vase of flowers brings a cluster of brighter colours into the lower part of the window, while the cat is tucked close to the bottom, easy to miss on a first look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI liked that the photograph asks for a little attention. The peeling paint is immediately visible, but the interior takes longer to read. Reflections across the glass mingle with the curtains and flowers, letting the street and the room overlap without revealing everything inside. The cat gives that layered scene a living presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged for the camera. I stopped to observe what was already there, keeping the window and the surrounding wall together in the composition. Colour is essential to the result: the warm yellow exterior, cool reflections above and flowers below make each part distinct. The materials are ordinary, but the care in the individual tiles gives them significance. I wanted to preserve that human scale in the image, alongside the rough wall and the shadows around it. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open.
