Both looked directly toward my camera with expressions that were difficult to read—and that ambiguity was exactly what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a lot happening around them. Reflections fill the cafe windows, advertisements hang behind the glass, tables and signs push into the edges of the frame, and another face appears unexpectedly in the reflection at the far right. Dublin is present everywhere, but the two men remain firmly at the center of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because this image is really about people, expressions and the visual layers surrounding them. Without color, the dark jackets, brickwork, window reflections and cafe interior begin to work together rather than compete for attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStreet photography often depends on noticing something before the moment changes. There was nothing spectacular happening here. No event. No performance. Just two men sitting outside a cafe in Dublin in 2019.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYet their body language and direct looks give the photograph a tension I couldn't have arranged myself. I still don't know exactly what they were thinking when they noticed me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's part of why I like the photograph. Small painted tiles sit against a practical fence, carrying symbols, colours and messages that differ from one piece to the next. Some are immediately visible; others are partly lost in the dimmer areas. Together they form a public memorial with a very personal texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI framed the scene around the overhead light rather than trying to make every tile equally clear. Its warm glow gives the central lettering a place to settle, while the darker edges leave room for the eye to explore more slowly. The fence’s repeated diamond pattern connects the separate pieces without erasing their differences.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph holds an understated kind of remembrance. The materials are ordinary, but the care in the individual tiles gives them significance. I wanted to preserve that human scale in the image, alongside the rough wall and the shadows around it. As wall art, it may speak to someone connected to New York or interested in memorial photography and community-made public art. Behind the figure, the dark cross creates a strong horizontal and vertical structure. It separates the warmer tones of the statue from the pale background, making the close view easy to read. I like how the arms extend towards the edges while the face remains the most detailed part of the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI gave the photograph a warm orange treatment and a worn, textured appearance. That choice was intended to feel artistic while remaining respectful to my religious faith. The colour brings the pale background and the figure into a shared range of gold and brown, with deeper shadows around the hair and cross. The portrait remains recognizable, but the additional marks change how the eye moves across it. Small patches of coloured writing provide further interruptions within the largely restrained palette.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe photograph records the mural as a surface with more than one kind of visible mark. Below it, another hand rests against a lower bar while the passenger’s face remains largely hidden. I made the image beside a train in Mysore, India, close enough for those small gestures to fill the frame. It was a brief encounter, photographed as it unfolded. I did not arrange a pose or direct the passenger, and the photograph leaves the reason for the covered face open.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe carriage supplies a strong structure around the figure. Pale horizontal bars cross the dark opening, and a broad strip of metal on the right separates this window from the next. I kept that division in the composition because its scale changes the way the hands and face appear. The white shirt brings light into the lower half, with folds and a buttoned cuff remaining visible beneath the bars. Hair, fingers and the grain of the image have softer edges against the bright metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white lets me follow those differences without colour drawing attention elsewhere. From farther away, the window reads as a pattern of light lines and dark spaces; closer in, the hands become the centre of the photograph. I find that shift compelling. There is very little of the station or the train’s wider setting here, yet the carriage and its passenger remain closely connected.
