They weren't posing for me. One leaned forward with a drink held between his hands while the other sat back against the bench, legs crossed. Both looked directly toward my camera with expressions that were difficult to read—and that ambiguity was exactly what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a lot happening around them. Reflections fill the cafe windows, advertisements hang behind the glass, tables and signs push into the edges of the frame, and another face appears unexpectedly in the reflection at the far right. Dublin is present everywhere, but the two men remain firmly at the center of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because this image is really about people, expressions and the visual layers surrounding them. Without color, the dark jackets, brickwork, window reflections and cafe interior begin to work together rather than compete for attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStreet photography often depends on noticing something before the moment changes. There was nothing spectacular happening here. No event. No performance. Just two men sitting outside a cafe in Dublin in 2019.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYet their body language and direct looks give the photograph a tension I couldn't have arranged myself. I still don't know exactly what they were thinking when they noticed me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's part of why I like the photograph. What caught my attention was what happened inside it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLooking through the glass and steel structure, people appear again and again in the reflections. Some are immediately recognizable; others dissolve into fragments. A single visitor can seem to occupy several places at once, repeated across panes of glass and interrupted by the heavy architectural framework.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that confusion is the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the image in Berlin in 2014, looking into the interior of the Reichstag's glass dome. Rather than trying to simplify the scene, I embraced its complexity. The dark structural beams divide the frame into a series of irregular compartments, and within each one there seems to be another small scene unfolding.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe longer I look at it, the less certain I become about what is physically in front of me and what is only a reflection. People overlap. Lines change direction. Glass surfaces reveal one level while simultaneously reflecting another.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white pushes the photograph even further toward abstraction. Without color, I am left with geometry, repetition, movement and contrast. The architecture almost becomes a grid containing dozens of tiny human moments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what interested me most about photographing the Reichstag dome. Rather than trying to freeze the train sharply, I let the movement become part of the image. Its body stretches across the frame as a translucent blur, while the station around it remains rigid and sharply defined.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast is what interested me most.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture above the platform is immense. Curving steel supports repeat into the distance, smaller beams crisscross the ceiling, and rows of lights lead my eye through the station. Against all of that structure, the passing train becomes almost ghostlike. I can see its form, but not its details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is even a lone figure standing across the tracks, small enough to emphasize the scale of both the station and the moving train.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2005, and I still like the way it balances two completely different kinds of energy. The railway station feels permanent, engineered and solid. The train exists for only a fraction of a second before disappearing from the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph isn't simply about railway travel. Its massive stone walls and tall clock tower rise above a dense layer of tiled rooftops, while the forested mountain behind it compresses the scene and gives the architecture even more weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this view in 2011. What holds my attention is the relationship between the Black Church and everything surrounding it. The building is monumental, but it is not isolated. Roofs, chimneys, trees, narrow gaps between houses, and the steep hillside all crowd into the frame, creating the feeling of a city built in layers over a long period of time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subdued light is important here. There is no dramatic sunset and no bright blue sky competing with the architecture. Instead, the muted atmosphere lets the warm roof tiles, dark stone, and soft greens of the hillside settle into one restrained palette. The clock face and tower become natural points of focus without needing to be exaggerated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Black Church is one of Brasov’s defining landmarks, but I wanted the photograph to show more than the building alone. By keeping the surrounding rooftops and mountain in the composition, I could place it within the city rather than separate it from the place that gives it context. Its windows dissolve into a soft blur, yet the roof structure above remains sharp enough to give the image a rigid framework. I like that collision of movement and geometry. The ceiling grid, vertical supports, and platform edge create an ordered architectural setting, while the train seems to tear straight through it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is also something almost abstract about the photograph. The deep red body of the train carries most of the visual weight, broken by a clean white stripe and the softer glow of the windows below. Even without seeing a single passenger clearly, the image still feels occupied and alive because of the suggestion of movement behind the glass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in Dresden, Germany, in 2013. Chimneys break through steep tiled roofs. Domes and ornate façades appear between simpler buildings. Farther back, the skyline rises above the city, giving the photograph a natural destination without overwhelming everything happening below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt particularly suited to this view. Without color separating the buildings, the shapes, rooflines, windows, masonry, and repeating patterns become much more apparent. The city turns into an intricate arrangement of light and dark, with hundreds of small details packed into a single scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the density. There is very little empty space here. One building overlaps the next, then another, creating a visual record of a city that feels as though it has been assembled gradually rather than planned as one uniform whole. Even the cloudy sky seems to press downward, concentrating attention on the architecture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom a distance Prague can be defined by its great landmarks. Hore Abbey, near Cashel in County Tipperary, had enough presence on its own. I photographed the medieval stone complex in black and white beneath a broad overcast sky, letting its broken walls, central tower, arches, and rough masonry carry the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy wife and I came across the abbey while travelling through Ireland in 2019, only about a 15-minute walk from the much better-known Rock of Cashel. That contrast stayed with me. The Rock draws the attention, yet just beyond it sits this extraordinary ruin in the open countryside, quieter and far less imposing in the way it announces itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is built around that sense of isolation. A wide field separates me from the structure, while the empty sky gives the abbey room to stand almost as a piece of sculpture. The surviving walls still reveal the shape of the original Gothic church, but sections have collapsed into irregular stone forms. In black and white, those textures become more pronounced: weathered blocks, dark openings, broken rooflines, and the soft grass surrounding them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHore Abbey began as a Benedictine monastery before passing to the Cistercians in the 13th century, becoming the last pre-Reformation Cistercian foundation in Ireland. Along Dresden's Neumarkt, one facade leads into the next through repeated windows, steep rooflines, dormers, chimneys, storefronts, and small decorative details that only become obvious when I stop and look carefully.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI framed the scene vertically because the architecture kept pulling my eye upward. The lower part of the photograph is busy with awnings, signs, a streetlamp, a parked scooter, and the practical details of everyday city life. Above that, everything becomes more ordered. Rows of windows repeat across several buildings, while the roofline steps gradually higher before disappearing into a pale sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe contrast between the facades is what makes the photograph work for me. Some are restrained and almost severe. Others carry ornamental plasterwork, soft colour, and more traditional proportions. A darker, more contemporary building interrupts the sequence without breaking it. Together they create a layered streetscape rather than a single architectural subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often drawn to buildings this way—not because one structure is spectacular, but because several ordinary facades begin to form a larger composition. Here, the repetition, subtle differences, muted colour palette, and upward sweep of the street created the photograph. A deep blue sky hangs over the buildings while streetlights trace both banks of the Liffey. The river becomes the centre of everything, gathering those lights and pulling them downward into elongated reflections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the symmetry without everything being perfectly symmetrical. Buildings line both sides of the water, bridges draw the eye toward the centre, and the river creates a strong visual path through the city. Yet every reflection behaves differently. Some are narrow and precise; others dissolve into broad strokes of light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe quietness of the scene matters to me as much as the colour. Dublin is a busy city, but at this hour it feels unusually still. The architecture remains present without overwhelming the river, while the saturated blue overhead gives the warmer lights along the streets an almost theatrical contrast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always liked photographing cities when their familiar character changes for a few minutes. Here, the River Liffey is not simply running through Dublin. The stairs rise sharply through the centre of the photograph toward another doorway, while pipes, railings, windows and exposed brick break the surrounding walls into a collection of lines and textures. Nothing is perfectly polished. The stone floor is worn, the masonry is irregular, and the surfaces carry the marks of long use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt natural here. Without colour, the photograph becomes more about light, geometry and material. Bright stone steps stand against the darker brickwork. From that elevated position, the Colosseum sweeps across the right side of the frame, its repeating arches gradually disappearing into shadow. The open sky above it remains remarkably simple, filled with warm amber light that gives the entire scene an almost monochromatic quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the contrast between the scale of the structure and the small signs of contemporary Rome surrounding it. People gather near the base, the road crosses the foreground, and buildings rise in the distance, yet the Colosseum still overwhelms everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI deliberately allowed the mood to become darker than the familiar sunlit views of Rome. Deep shadows fill the arches, the weathered stone catches the remaining light, and the broad empty sky creates a sense of space around a monument normally surrounded by visual activity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat was the photograph I wanted—not simply a record of the Roman Colosseum, but a quieter view of it after the day had begun to disappear. Without colour competing for attention, the road markings, vegetation and repeated bends become much more graphic. The asphalt stands apart from the textured landscape, while two small cars give the photograph scale and make the road feel even more dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the geometry. One curve leads naturally into another, then disappears behind vegetation before returning farther up the hillside. The eye keeps following it. There is no single obvious endpoint; the road simply continues through the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIreland is often photographed for its expansive green landscapes, but I wanted something different here. The aerial perspective turned an ordinary country road into an almost abstract composition of curves, lines and changing textures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, Corkscrew Hill is exactly the kind of subject that benefits from being seen from an unfamiliar angle. Broad stone steps enter from the left, while the paved lane continues between tall buildings toward a dark doorway at the far end. Balconies rise above it, an old wall lamp projects into the narrow space, and a metal shutter marked with graffiti introduces something unmistakably contemporary into an otherwise aged setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right because the photograph is really about surfaces and structure. Rough stone, smoother masonry, dark window openings and irregular paving all separate through tone rather than colour. The absence of people makes the street feel unusually still.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBarcelona's Gothic Quarter can be crowded and energetic, but scenes like this have always interested me more. That wider view mattered. Between them are hedges, railings, road signs, pavement, windows and rows of modest homes. These everyday details give the murals context and show how completely they are woven into the surrounding streetscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast weather helped. Colour was already subdued, and I kept the treatment restrained so the large figures and graphic shapes would remain visually dominant. The red clothing on the right-hand mural survives against an otherwise muted scene, drawing the eye across the frame without overwhelming everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the stillness. There were no crowds gathered in front of the murals and nothing staged for the camera. The street simply continued around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDerry contains history in unusually visible ways, and here it occupies the walls of residential buildings rather than a separate exhibition space. Everything else in the scene feels remarkably solid—the heavy masonry, the geometric paving underfoot and the bright glass structure cutting horizontally across the lower half of the frame. Then the flag breaks that stillness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white suited the scene immediately. Without colour, the photograph becomes a study of light, architecture and contrast. The old stone tower rises from the darker roofline while the modern glass surfaces below glow almost white. Farther away, contemporary Berlin appears only as a scattering of buildings and lights along the horizon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have photographed Berlin many times, and I am always interested in the way older architecture and modern design coexist within the city. From this rooftop viewpoint, that relationship became unusually clear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph is not the grand exterior view normally associated with the Reichstag. The broad paving in the foreground creates distance, allowing the architecture to unfold gradually as the eye moves deeper into the scene. Bicycles line one side, cars occupy the narrow passage ahead, and a few people cross the square, giving just enough scale to understand the size of the surrounding structures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast sky suited the scene. Its soft light reveals the stonework without harsh shadows, while the subdued colour keeps attention on the elaborate facades, windows, domes and sculptural details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often more interested in the spaces between important buildings than in photographing landmarks individually. A square like this shows how architecture functions together—how different structures, streets and public spaces accumulate into the character of an old European city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that layering is what makes the photograph interesting. Below, the modern city remains visible in layers of rooftops, windows and scattered lights, giving the mosque both scale and context.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was that relationship between the monumental and the everyday. The mosque dominates the skyline, yet it is still embedded within the dense fabric of Istanbul rather than standing apart from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDusk is often when a city changes character most quickly. Details disappear, artificial lights begin to define the architecture, and familiar buildings take on a completely different weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat transition is what I wanted to hold onto here. That irregularity is precisely what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the building straight on because the facade already had a strong structure. Vertical support beams divide the frame, horizontal boards create repetition, and the central doorway gives the photograph an anchor. Behind the glass, patterned curtains remain visible, introducing an unexpectedly delicate detail among all the heavy timber and weathered surfaces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white concentrates everything on texture. Splintered boards, cracked plaster, worn paint and dark gaps between the timbers become more important than colour. Its warm facade immediately separates it from the quieter stone buildings around it, and that same colour returns in the water beneath. Bare trees weave through the architecture, pedestrians move along the promenade, and dozens of modest boats create an irregular line between the city and the harbor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep all of those layers together. Moving closer to the architecture would have lost the boats; concentrating on the marina would have removed the character of Rijeka behind it. From this viewpoint, both belong to the same photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me about port cities is that their relationship with the water is visible everywhere. Streets, buildings, boats and daily life all meet at the shoreline.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, the reflections complete that connection. The architecture does not simply stop at the harbor's edge—it continues downward into the water, broken into long streaks of yellow, gray, blue and red. From this elevated position, the architecture becomes almost abstract. Curving lines circle the frame while the dark central form narrows toward the building below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour added very little to what interested me. This photograph is about shape, repetition, reflection and light. The strong horizontal bands of the central structure create a visual rhythm, while the glass floor and surrounding framework reveal people and interior spaces far beneath the viewpoint.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSmall points of light break through the darker areas, producing sharp star-like highlights against the steel and glass. Around them, reflections overlap with structural lines until it becomes difficult to tell where one surface ends and another begins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is that the photograph does not immediately explain itself. The Reichstag is one of Berlin's most recognizable buildings, yet from inside the dome the familiar landmark becomes a study in contemporary architectural design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that is what made the scene worth photographing. I was no longer looking at a government building from the outside. There is no single landmark carrying the photograph. The entire residential landscape is the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the view broad because the depth mattered. The rough paving and sloping foreground establish where I am standing, then the eye moves through a lower band of rooftops into increasingly dense rows of homes. Farther back, larger buildings and another line of houses continue the pattern toward the ridge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white removes the distractions I did not need. Without colour, the repeating rooflines, pale walls, darker trees and small streets become more obvious. The scene starts to feel almost graphic, yet there is still enough detail to keep revealing individual homes, parked cars, murals and bits of everyday life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most is that this is not a polished postcard view of Northern Ireland. It is an ordinary urban neighbourhood seen from an unusual vantage point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that is where the photograph becomes interesting. From a distance, Rosemount reads as one broad cityscape. Closer to the river, ornate architecture stretches across the frame in a mixture of white, gold and cooler blue light. Those colours continue downward into the Vltava River, where the reflections become softer and less precise, broken into long vertical bands by the movement of the water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like the layering in this view. The river creates the foreground, the buildings form a bright horizontal band through the centre, and the castle sits higher on the hill behind them. Nothing needs to dominate completely. My eye moves from the reflections to the architecture and then gradually upward toward the castle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePrague is extraordinarily rich visually, particularly after daylight disappears and individual buildings begin to separate through artificial light. In this photograph, the city feels almost theatrical without losing the sense of a real place. I photographed this view of the Tempio Votivo on Venice’s Lido in 2005, drawn to the way one strong architectural shape could hold together a whole stretch of waterfront.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the setting to remain part of the photograph. Pulling back gave the temple room among the surrounding buildings instead of isolating it as a single monument. Its rounded dome and upright columns stand clearly above the treeline, but the smaller structures along the shore contribute their own rhythm of roofs, windows and shaded walls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the foreground, a series of markers breaks up the rippled surface of the lagoon. Their spacing leads the eye across the water toward the shore, creating a quieter counterpoint to the detail in the architecture. The grey sky gives the dome a simple backdrop and leaves the waterfront as the busiest part of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings those relationships forward. I’m interested in the contrast between the temple’s ordered form and the softer textures of foliage and water, and in how much breathing room this view allows. That distance matters to me. It leaves room for the road, neighbouring buildings and dark outlines of trees, placing the amphitheatre within the city that surrounds it. The repeated arches supply a steady pattern against the less predictable lines of passing traffic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA long exposure turns that movement into bands of light. Individual vehicles become less important than the paths they trace, and the road takes on a brightness that the surrounding streetscape doesn’t share. Streetlights punctuate the darker areas, while the sky remains subdued enough to let the lit stone and traffic stand out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’m drawn to the different kinds of time visible here. The building holds its shape throughout the exposure; the vehicles leave only a record of their movement. Keeping both in the composition gives the scene its character. Inside, lace curtains soften those straight lines. A vase of flowers brings a cluster of brighter colours into the lower part of the window, while the cat is tucked close to the bottom, easy to miss on a first look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI liked that the photograph asks for a little attention. The peeling paint is immediately visible, but the interior takes longer to read. Reflections across the glass mingle with the curtains and flowers, letting the street and the room overlap without revealing everything inside. The cat gives that layered scene a living presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged for the camera. I stopped to observe what was already there, keeping the window and the surrounding wall together in the composition. Colour is essential to the result: the warm yellow exterior, cool reflections above and flowers below make each part distinct. Yellow fills much of the frame, interrupted by green paint, dark door panels and patches where the surface has broken away. The man’s quieter clothing stands apart from that brightness. His position near the left edge lets the architecture occupy the picture without turning it into an empty study of buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbove the doors, lace curtains and small plants soften the windows. At street level, signs, pipes and slender posts keep the scene grounded in ordinary use. I like how those details remain visible alongside the weathering. There is care here as well as wear, and the photograph leaves room for both.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the interest lies in that meeting of a person and a place for a brief moment. The old-town setting has texture and colour, while the walking figure brings movement to its otherwise steady lines.
