Its subdued colours can sit naturally in an office or a room where texture and strong lines are part of the appeal.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Hearn-Generating-Station-Toronto-Industrial-Interior-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791876612
architectural-detail-of-the-romanian-athenaeum
Romanian Athenaeum Architectural Detail Black and White Photography

Carved Cornices and Curved Stone Seen From Below

Looking upward changes the building into a set of intersecting shapes. In this black and white photograph of the Romanian Athenaeum, projecting cornices cut diagonally across the frame while a curved upper section rises behind them. I made the image in 2011, concentrating on a small part of the architecture rather than the whole facade.

The details are intricate, but the composition has a clear structure. Strong edges divide bands of carving, repeated small forms trace the stonework, and a decorative scroll sits near the upper centre. That separation lets the ornament remain legible without flattening it into a pattern.

I like the tension between the curved section and the straighter lines below it. Its neutral palette and ordered lines offer a composed focal point for an office or contemporary room, with the stair flights adding movement within the grid.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Berlin-Glass-Staircase-Black-and-White-Architectural-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791493047
vintage-red-hull-weathered-beauty
Red Ship Hull and Portholes | Nautical Wall Art

Two Portholes and a Rope Across Bright Red Steel

The red does most of the talking. Two round portholes interrupt it, and a thick mooring rope cuts diagonally across the hull. I found this detail during a morning walk along the docks in Ushuaia, Argentina, where a working vessel offered a remarkably simple colour photograph.

I kept the view close. Without the deck, bow, or wider harbour, the ship becomes a surface to look at rather than an object to identify. The portholes sit near one another but are far from identical: one is almost black, while the other catches a cool blue tone. Their curved rims stand out against the broad red field.

The rope gives that still arrangement a direction. Running from low on the left to high on the right, it passes beneath the portholes and connects both edges of the frame. Its rough fibres provide a clear contrast with the painted steel.

There are signs of wear, but they remain quiet details. Fine streaks, small marks, and seams become visible after the colour has caught your attention. The boat is still present in the rope and portholes, yet the composition works through circles, a diagonal line, and an unusually strong expanse of red. Bright horizontal bands cross long vertical channels, while angled surfaces create a succession of dark wedges. The result keeps the structure of the city while changing the way we see it.

Each pane bends a small part of the neighbouring architecture. Straight edges appear to ripple, and repeated windows stretch into uneven shapes. Across that movement, the facade’s own grid remains visible. Fine dividing lines and a broad, steadier band through the middle hold the composition together, giving the eye a clear structure beneath the restless reflections. I like that tension: the building is orderly, yet the city it reflects seems to be shifting from one panel to the next.

The warm and cool colours give the photograph its energy. The photograph brings those different surfaces together in a quiet architectural study.

The doorway’s centre is more closely divided than its outer sections. Narrow upright frames surround the doors, and smaller panels sit above them. At either side, broader curtained areas provide a simpler rhythm. It offers structure and quiet complexity that become more apparent with time.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2011

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Buenos-Aires-Classical-Architecture-Black-and-White-Photo-Print-1.jpg?v=1791541354
chicago-bean-building-reflections
Chicago Bean Building Reflections Abstract Architecture Photography

Glass Towers Lean Across a Curved Silver Surface

Chicago’s buildings become unexpectedly fluid when they pass through the surface of the Bean. I concentrated on a small portion of Cloud Gate, letting its polished curve turn familiar architecture into something less predictable.

The sculpture itself is almost hidden by what it reflects. A broad, silvery band sweeps upward through the frame, carrying pale clouds and the outlines of buildings. Tall, narrow forms lean beside a broader facade, and dark sections give the lighter buildings a firm edge.

I wanted the photograph to sit between an architectural study and an abstract image. There is enough detail to recognize the city, but no broad view of the park or crowds to explain the scene immediately. The diagonal composition makes that boundary feel active rather than simply decorative.

Photographed in 2011, this is my close look at the relationship between Chicago’s skyline and Cloud Gate. Along the right edge, dark ladder rungs cut across the vertical wood, creating a simple pattern within a deeply weathered surface. I found the scene at an outdoor transportation museum, where the older vehicles offered details that were easy to overlook when taking in their full shapes.

Here, the railcar becomes almost abstract. There are no tracks or wheels in the frame to establish its size, only painted timber, fittings, and the evenly spaced steps. Cracks and grain run down the boards, interrupting what might otherwise have been a flat field of colour.

I liked the contrast between those irregular marks and the ladder’s orderly repetition. Desks, chairs, and small details of office life sit within a much larger arrangement of windows in this Berlin night photograph. Bright windows alternate with darker panels, and the railings across them introduce fine horizontal lines. Those two directions create depth within a tightly framed architectural view.

At ground level, a handrail and low planting provide a simpler foreground. I included them as a way into the scene, with the rail echoing the larger window framework above. The building’s framework repeats consistently, but the light and contents of each room change. There are enough differences to keep the eye moving through the grid. This is a close view of modern Berlin architecture after dark, with the interior illumination revealing more than the exterior alone could show. In this black and white Berlin night photograph, I placed the view near the middle of the path so that the two rows draw the eye towards a distant illuminated building. The scene has a measured, almost symmetrical structure, softened by the different trees and facades around it.

Most of the benches are unoccupied. Their curved backs and dark seats sit below the sharper lines of the lamps, giving the lower part of the photograph a quieter rhythm. Each lamp marks another step into the scene, while the buildings create two different boundaries: simpler surfaces on the left and more elaborate stonework on the right. You can see the wall through its smaller openings, and the rail changes direction as it wraps around the central support. The surrounding objects are part of the restaurant’s character, but the staircase holds the composition together.

I kept enough of the room visible for that contrast to remain. The damaged plaster has an uneven, mottled texture, while the brickwork forms more regular bands along the lower wall. A few fine lines of rigging and a rope ladder give this close view of Bluenose II its structure, turning a nautical detail into a restrained black and white composition. The ladder and rigging suggest the schooner beyond the edges, while the open area lets each line remain distinct. In this close photograph, their repeated round forms become a pattern of pale glass and deep shadow.

The light is strongest through the centre, where individual circles are easiest to distinguish. Towards the top and bottom, the forms soften and darken, giving the pattern depth rather than leaving it as an even arrangement. Some bottles catch a warm glow; others remain almost entirely black. Those small differences keep the repetition lively, letting the eye move from one shape to the next without finding two identical areas.

I was interested in the point where the bottles become less literal. Their familiar shape remains present, but the closely framed view also reads as an abstract study of curves, spacing, and light. The cellar’s wider surroundings stay outside the image, allowing the glass itself to carry the atmosphere. This is wine-related art with a quieter, more graphic character than a table setting or a bottle label. In a dining room, kitchen, or tasting space, the print can offer both a recognisable connection to wine and a richly patterned surface to explore. For me, its appeal comes from a small discovery within the cellar: ordinary bottles becoming something unexpected when seen through the light.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Mexican-Wine-Cellar-Bottles-Abstract-Photography-Print-1.jpg?v=1791998895
ceiling-hallgrimskirkja-lutheran-church
Hallgrimskirkja Ceiling Black and White Architectural Print

Vaulted Ribs Meet in a Symmetrical Pattern Overhead

Looking straight up changes the church into a pattern. The edge is clearly defined, but everything around it has a gentler quality.
