Buildings stretch and curve across the steel, the horizon folds inward, and the people scattered through Millennium Park become tiny figures inside the reflection. Behind it, the rigid geometry of the surrounding architecture creates almost the opposite effect—straight lines, repeated windows and hard rectangular forms surrounding this enormous fluid shape.

I photographed the scene in 2011 and chose black and white because it strips away much of the visual noise. The lower part of the photograph is busy with awnings, signs, a streetlamp, a parked scooter, and the practical details of everyday city life. Above that, everything becomes more ordered. Rows of windows repeat across several buildings, while the roofline steps gradually higher before disappearing into a pale sky.

The contrast between the facades is what makes the photograph work for me. Some are restrained and almost severe. Others carry ornamental plasterwork, soft colour, and more traditional proportions. A darker, more contemporary building interrupts the sequence without breaking it. Together they create a layered streetscape rather than a single architectural subject.

I am often drawn to buildings this way—not because one structure is spectacular, but because several ordinary facades begin to form a larger composition. Here, the repetition, subtle differences, muted colour palette, and upward sweep of the street created the photograph. Rough concrete columns dominate the foreground. Beyond them, worn floorboards, scattered debris, broken material and a large leaning panel interrupt what was once an orderly working space. There is very little left to soften the building. That emptiness is part of what interested me.

I chose black and white because the photograph is really about structure, texture and depth. At ground level, each bend would be experienced one at a time. From this elevated viewpoint, the entire sequence becomes visible at once—a series of tight curves cutting a dark ribbon through the surrounding fields and trees.

Black and white changed the scene considerably. The old stone tower rises from the darker roofline while the modern glass surfaces below glow almost white. Farther away, contemporary Berlin appears only as a scattering of buildings and lights along the horizon.

I have photographed Berlin many times, and I am always interested in the way older architecture and modern design coexist within the city. From this rooftop viewpoint, that relationship became unusually clear.

For me, the photograph is not the grand exterior view normally associated with the Reichstag. Pale walls stand against darker roofs and tree trunks, while the water offers a softer version of the same contrasts. The narrow horizontal boundary between building and reflection becomes the picture’s organising line, letting the eye move across the scene before exploring its mirrored lower half.

This photograph recalls the quiet moments I found while exploring Beijing. What held my attention was the still water and the ordinary buildings beside it, rather than a grand view of the palace itself. The bridge tower feels heavier, the benches more graphic, and the soft water provides a quieter counterpoint to all that structure.

New York is usually photographed through movement and density. Here, what interests me is the opposite. The boardwalk is open, the benches are empty, and the city across the East River feels slightly removed. Without the deck, bow, or wider harbour, the ship becomes a surface to look at rather than an object to identify. Their curved rims stand out against the broad red field.

The rope gives that still arrangement a direction. The red fills most of the image, but the narrow turquoise trim and ochre wall give it a different character from a simple study of painted doors.

I made this photograph while walking through a quieter section of the palace complex. Away from the busier views, a single doorway offered enough to hold my attention. There is no sweeping courtyard here; the scale is close enough to see the marks in the paint and the small dark handles.

The two panels are nearly symmetrical, with the center seam providing a strong vertical line. Light escaping through that gap continues down toward the grey floorboards. I like that small interruption in the otherwise enclosed surface. It draws the eye without competing with the broad red shapes.

The color relationships matter just as much as the geometry. Turquoise gives the frame a cool edge, while the ochre above belongs to the same warm family as the doors. Grey wood beneath them settles the composition and makes the brighter colors feel more distinct.

For me, this view of the Forbidden City rests in an architectural detail rather than a famous skyline. Its appeal lies in the meeting of worn surfaces, clear lines, and a little unexpected light. I chose black and white for the photograph so the wheel, chrome, and curved fender could work together without color drawing attention away from their shapes. A second wheel appears farther along the car, repeating the first on a smaller scale.

The angle is part of what interests me. Looking down across the spare, I could bring its tread, pale sidewall, and wire spokes into the same composition as the long sweep of the fender. The large circle is tilted within the frame rather than presented straight on, giving the detail a sense of movement.

There is a lot to explore inside that circle. Fine spokes cross one another around the reflective hub, while the tire carries a much heavier pattern along its outer edge. I like the difference between those delicate metal lines and the solid band of rubber surrounding them.

The glossy body beside the spare reflects light in broad patches. Beneath it, the darker ground provides a plain surface that lets the mechanical details remain clear. Beyond them, a large face on a screen appears between trees and the straight lines of city buildings.

That unexpected pairing is what gives the view its character. The metal has a steady, repeated rhythm, with narrow gaps and small crosspieces breaking up the curves. I like how it catches the eye after the stronger architectural lines have led us through the image.

The upward angle brings several kinds of geometry together.
