I’ve photographed cityscapes where architecture repeats in perfect symmetry, details where shadow and light carve sharp angles, and natural forms that mirror design itself. These images strip scenes down to structure, turning them into fine art that feels modern, abstract, and bold. Without it, the frame would have been almost entirely about architecture and surface. At street level these buildings are part of a busy downtown environment. Its subdued colours can sit naturally in an office or a room where texture and strong lines are part of the appeal.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Hearn-Generating-Station-Toronto-Industrial-Interior-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791876612
architectural-detail-of-the-romanian-athenaeum
Romanian Athenaeum Architectural Detail Black and White Photography

Carved Cornices and Curved Stone Seen From Below

Looking upward changes the building into a set of intersecting shapes. In this black and white photograph of the Romanian Athenaeum, projecting cornices cut diagonally across the frame while a curved upper section rises behind them. I made the image in 2011, concentrating on a small part of the architecture rather than the whole facade.

The details are intricate, but the composition has a clear structure. Strong edges divide bands of carving, repeated small forms trace the stonework, and a decorative scroll sits near the upper centre. That separation lets the ornament remain legible without flattening it into a pattern.

I like the tension between the curved section and the straighter lines below it. Its neutral palette and ordered lines offer a composed focal point for an office or contemporary room, with the stair flights adding movement within the grid.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Berlin-Glass-Staircase-Black-and-White-Architectural-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791493047
vintage-red-hull-weathered-beauty
Red Ship Hull and Portholes | Nautical Wall Art

Two Portholes and a Rope Across Bright Red Steel

The red does most of the talking. Two round portholes interrupt it, and a thick mooring rope cuts diagonally across the hull. I found this detail during a morning walk along the docks in Ushuaia, Argentina, where a working vessel offered a remarkably simple colour photograph.

I kept the view close. Without the deck, bow, or wider harbour, the ship becomes a surface to look at rather than an object to identify. The portholes sit near one another but are far from identical: one is almost black, while the other catches a cool blue tone. Their curved rims stand out against the broad red field.

The rope gives that still arrangement a direction. Running from low on the left to high on the right, it passes beneath the portholes and connects both edges of the frame. Its rough fibres provide a clear contrast with the painted steel.

There are signs of wear, but they remain quiet details. Fine streaks, small marks, and seams become visible after the colour has caught your attention. The boat is still present in the rope and portholes, yet the composition works through circles, a diagonal line, and an unusually strong expanse of red. The result suits an interest in contemporary design while still offering something human to discover among the lines.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Curved-Metal-and-a-Screen-Portrait-Discovery-District-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791618405
1932-ford-v8-emblem-black-and-white
1932 Ford V8 Badge Against a Diagonal Grille | Monochrome Photography

Chrome Curves Within a Repeated Pattern of Grille Bars

The V8 badge gives this 1932 Ford Coupe De Luxe detail an unmistakable center. Around it, narrow radiator grille bars repeat across the frame, while a heavier chrome strip crosses beneath the emblem. I photographed the view at an angle in black and white, letting the car’s design become a pattern of curves, straight lines, and dark spaces.

The badge’s rounded forms stand apart from the grille. Two open loops overlap the sharper V shape, and bright highlights follow their polished edges. I like how that compact symbol can hold its place within so much repetition. The car remains recognizable through one feature, even though its wheels and body profile are outside the photograph.

The grille provides movement as well as texture. Its closely spaced bars travel diagonally through the vertical composition, with deep shadow between them. The thicker crosspiece runs in another direction, giving the emblem a clear base and interrupting the pattern below. Chrome carries several tones within those lines, from near-white highlights to darker reflections along the metal.

For me, this is a close view that connects automotive identity with graphic design. The Ford V8 symbol is familiar, but the surrounding geometry gives it a fresh setting within the photograph. I return to the badge first, then to the steady rhythm of bars extending beyond it. Some edges lift enough to cast small shadows; others lie flatter and form pale, smooth shapes between the darker gaps. Their yellow and ochre tones pick up the warmth of the earth while their finer shapes contrast with the larger plates.

My eye moves through this image along the cracks rather than toward a single focal point. In this black and white photograph of New York’s World Trade Center, I look upward along the illuminated facade, following rows of projecting architectural elements as they narrow toward the top of the frame. The city around it falls away, leaving a tightly ordered arrangement of light, shadow, and perspective.

The lower edge is full of detail. Bright horizontal bands cross long vertical channels, while angled surfaces create a succession of dark wedges. I like the way that variation keeps the repetition alive.

Farther up, the same lines grow smaller and merge into a darker, denser texture. I photographed this view near Anchorage from a small single-engine plane, looking down onto the exposed shoreline at low tide. With no horizon in the frame, the landscape reads almost like a drawing, its branching waterways filling the entire vertical composition.

The larger channels run in loose curves from top to bottom, dividing darker areas of earth into irregular shapes. The light differences across the surface give the channels their definition without turning the scene into a sharp contrast study. Looking down from the small plane, I could see broad pale channels dividing darker ground into long, irregular islands of texture. The view offered a natural abstract composition, with the coastline’s branching forms taking the place of a conventional horizon.

A wide channel rises through the lower centre before splitting across the frame. Finer branches thread between the dark sections, creating a second, more delicate pattern inside the larger one. In black and white, those differences become especially clear. The bright areas have a soft, almost silvery appearance, while the darker ground holds closely packed ridges and marks.

The vertical framing follows the channels’ length. There is no single stopping point: each curve leads into a new division, and small routes disappear beside much broader sweeps. Deep red walls frame the entrance, while pale curtains fill the upper sections and intricate carving covers the lower panels. The photograph brings those different surfaces together in a quiet architectural study.

The doorway’s centre is more closely divided than its outer sections. Narrow upright frames surround the doors, and smaller panels sit above them. At either side, broader curtained areas provide a simpler rhythm. I like how those changes give the symmetry some variety, letting the eye move inward without making every part of the entrance look the same.

Across the lower woodwork, small geometric lines repeat in dense patterns. Their dark recesses contrast with the softer vertical folds above. Weathering adds fine differences to the wood’s colour, while greenish and muted warm tones remain around some of the edges. The red wall holds the entire arrangement within a strong, uncomplicated border.

Stone paving and a shallow step give the doorway a base. I concentrated on a small portion of Cloud Gate, letting its polished curve turn familiar architecture into something less predictable.

The sculpture itself is almost hidden by what it reflects. A broad, silvery band sweeps upward through the frame, carrying pale clouds and the outlines of buildings. Rows of windows remain sharply recognizable, yet their angles no longer behave quite as they would in a straightforward city view. Tall, narrow forms lean beside a broader facade, and dark sections give the lighter buildings a firm edge.

I wanted the photograph to sit between an architectural study and an abstract image. There is enough detail to recognize the city, but no broad view of the park or crowds to explain the scene immediately. Instead, the eye follows the meeting of blue sky, reflected glass and the sculpture’s curved surface. The diagonal composition makes that boundary feel active rather than simply decorative.

Photographed in 2011, this is my close look at the relationship between Chicago’s skyline and Cloud Gate. Its appeal is in the meeting of nautical detail and simple geometry: an upward view in which fine ropes, repeated steps and a solid mast hold the entire image together.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Bluenose-II-Rigging-Nova-Scotia-Black-and-White-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791519104
swamp-grass-in-algonquin-park
Algonquin Swamp Grass Reflections Abstract Nature Photography Print

Green Stems Become Wavering Lines in Water

Bright green swamp grass and its wavering reflections form an almost abstract pattern in this photograph from Algonquin Park, Ontario. I framed the scene closely, leaving out the wider landscape so that the meeting of stems and water becomes the entire subject. The upper half is dense with upright lines; below, those same lines loosen into delicate, irregular ripples.

It is the change between the two that holds my eye. The grasses have a fine, wiry structure, with a few blades leaning across their neighbours. Their reflections stretch down through darker water, retaining the green colour while losing the certainty of the shapes above. Small disturbances in the surface turn a straightforward natural detail into something more fluid.

The range of greens gives the photograph its energy. Yellow-green highlights stand out against deeper olive tones, and patches of dark water keep the brightness from becoming uniform. There is no single dominant stem. Instead, the eye moves across a repeated pattern, finding little variations wherever it settles.

I like how a close look at a wetland can suggest a different way of seeing the surrounding park. This scene offers neither a broad vista nor a dramatic landmark, but a quiet encounter with texture, colour, and reflection. On a wall, the image brings a fresh green accent and a sense of gentle movement, suited to spaces where nature is welcome in a less literal form.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Algonquin-Swamp-Grass-Reflections-Abstract-Nature-Photography-Print-1b.jpg?v=1791476466
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/collections/Geometry-Wall-Art-Collection-2163216.jpg?v=1763060400
