Fremantle Prison Cell Block Staircase Black and White Interior Photography
Pale Stone Walls Beneath Mesh Walkways and Repeating Doorways
A staircase rises through the centre of Fremantle Prison’s cell block, surrounded by rows of dark doorways set into pale walls. Above it, mesh and upper walkways create another layer of lines across the interior. I photographed this Western Australian prison in 2016. The view offered a clear architectural structure, with the central stairs drawing attention upward while the lower passage remained open around them.
At the left, a barred doorway sits within a rounded stone opening. Its bright background makes the individual bars distinct against the darker interior. Further along, smaller doors repeat at regular intervals, matched by another row on the opposite wall. I like the way that repetition carries the eye toward the rear of the room. Pipes and narrow fittings follow the wall above them, adding finer horizontal lines beneath the upper level.
The floor has broad rectangular slabs crossed by pale painted markings. Their straight paths lead toward the staircase, reinforcing its central position. Black and white brings those practical details into the same tonal arrangement as the rough walls, metal rails and overhead mesh. The upper structure remains more intricate, while the open ground level gives the image room to breathe. As a print, this photograph offers a detailed view of an institutional interior, suited to an interest in historic prison architecture, symmetrical spaces and the relationship between stone, metal and repeated geometric forms.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
