That contrast makes the passage feel deep without needing to show its full length.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the way the fine striations describe every change in shape. They resemble grain running through a carved surface, yet their direction is continually interrupted by the canyon’s contours. Near the centre, a rounded sandstone shoulder catches the light before dropping into shadow beneath. It gives the eye a place to pause within the flowing pattern.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI photographed this scene in 2007. Choosing monochrome brings the structure of the walls forward, allowing light and texture to carry the view. Their banked angles show the wings as small diagonal forms, and their spacing keeps the eye moving from the lower left toward the upper right. Cables and drainpipes remain visible, along with flowerpots and the iron balcony. These imperfections are part of what interested me. On the right, tighter curves repeat in a different rhythm. Between them, a dark strip carries thin vertical lines through the centre of the image. I wanted those three areas to remain distinct while still forming one continuous view. Smaller panel seams add a finer grid inside the larger waves.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWorking in monochrome gave me room to concentrate on the changes in light and shape. The darker channels separate the pale bands, but they do not all run at the same angle or width. That variation is what keeps my eye following the surface instead of reading it as a simple repeated design. Standing there, I was less interested in the height of the tower than in the way its facade changed as I looked across it. I kept the path prominent so that the distant tower could be reached visually through the nearer curves. Monochrome connects the different surfaces without losing the tile pattern, railings, or cable lines. The ferry provides a smaller point of scale within the bay, balancing the close presence of the structure overhead. The result brought out an arrangement of colour and texture that was difficult to see from where I stood below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe channel narrows at the bottom, then opens into broader curves toward the upper right. Smaller blue patches and pale streaks extend into the warmer ground on the left. Along the right side, rougher yellow earth forms a distinct boundary, giving the main shape a more defined edge. I chose a vertical composition because it suited that long, winding movement. It allows the eye to follow the channel while still taking in the mottled surfaces beside it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe colours drew me in immediately, but their variations are what keep me looking. There are dark blue pockets, lighter turquoise passages, and subtle grey areas between the brighter sections. The orange ground is equally varied, broken by pale marks and smaller branching shapes. For me, this photograph captures the value of looking at a landscape from another perspective. It remains a view of Iceland, yet its close framing gives it the visual freedom of abstract art.
