The lake was almost perfectly still, turning the abandoned ship and its towering masts into a reflection beneath a sky filled with gold, amber and orange.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ship is La Grande Hermine, but what interested me photographically wasn't simply its name or history. It was the extraordinary contrast between decay and beauty. The hull is weathered and deteriorating, sections of the old vessel have fallen away, and the bare masts and rigging reach into the sky without sails. Yet on this particular morning, the sunrise transformed everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI positioned myself low and close to the shoreline, allowing the ship to dominate the frame while still leaving room for the glowing sky and open water. The masts create strong geometric lines overhead, while their reflections stretch downward into the lake. Even the surrounding trees seem to frame the wreck, separating its dark, aging structure from the intense light behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something fascinating to me about objects that have outlived their original purpose. This ship was built to move through water, yet now it sits permanently grounded and slowly changing with time and weather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2019, but the scene itself felt strangely outside of time. It was completely out of place—a boat built for the water stranded inside an industrial building that was itself slowly falling apart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction made the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red paint had peeled away in long irregular streaks, exposing bare wood and traces of green underneath. Behind it, decades of wear had transformed the brick wall into layers of faded paint, stains and exposed masonry. Even the staircase seems to have become part of the decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition square and relatively tight because I wanted the boat and wall to become almost graphic. The diagonal of the hull cuts hard across the frame, while the staircase moves in the opposite direction. Against all those subdued browns, creams and grays, the remaining red paint refuses to disappear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this scene in 2006, not far from my studio in Ontario. I never learned how the boat ended up inside the factory, and I think I prefer not knowing. The mystery is part of what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph was later selected for publication in Black \u0026amp; White Magazine’s Colour Special Edition, which felt particularly appropriate. Color is essential here. Without that battered red hull, it simply wouldn't be the same photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSometimes the most interesting subjects aren't where they belong. Bodie is a genuine American ghost town, and what fascinated me was how much of the place still felt intact. I wasn't looking at a recreation or a movie set. These buildings had simply survived, weathering decade after decade in the dry California landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe contrast between the two structures immediately caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the left, the brick building still feels remarkably formal, with its repeating arched windows and carefully laid masonry. Beside it, the wooden building has aged very differently. Its boards are bleached and scarred, the storefront windows have darkened, and a large faded sign remains barely visible across the upper facade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI composed the photograph straight on because I wanted the buildings to stand almost like a portrait. Side by side. Nothing modern interrupts them. Even the empty land stretching away on either side reinforces the isolation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white seemed inevitable here. It concentrates my attention on the cracked wood, old brick, dusty glass and the extraordinary differences in texture between the two buildings. It also removes another layer of time. Without color, I find it much harder to immediately place the photograph in the present.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about Bodie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe town doesn't feel rebuilt for visitors. It feels interrupted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese buildings are still standing where people once worked, gathered and watched the town outside their windows. The people disappeared long ago. This one is about what time did to a very small part of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this old automobile at a vintage car exhibition in Los Angeles, but I was far more interested in getting close than making a conventional photograph of the vehicle. The door had become its own landscape. Cobwebs stretched across the window and chrome. Paint had cracked and separated. Scratches, dust and years of deterioration covered surfaces that were once polished and carefully maintained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe old door handle became the centre of the photograph. Its chrome was damaged and dull, yet enough of the original shape remained to suggest the styling and craftsmanship of another era.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the detail in black and white because colour seemed unnecessary. What interested me were the textures—the fractured paint, strands of webbing, worn metal, curved trim and deep shadows. Up close, the automobile almost disappears and the photograph becomes something more abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to things that show their age rather than hide it. The structure is still recognizable, yet vines have pushed across the roofline, tall grasses crowd the foreground, and sections of the lower wall have opened enough to expose the dark framework beneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Ontario and kept the composition vertical so the barn rises out of the tangled vegetation rather than sitting neatly apart from it. That relationship matters to me. The weathered boards, broken edges, leaning lines, and dense growth all compete within the frame, while the open space on the right gives the eye somewhere to move before returning to the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph because the subject is really about texture and structure. Removing color puts more emphasis on the grain of the wood, the pale grasses, the mass of leaves climbing over the barn, and the deep shadow inside the damaged lower section. Even the heavy cloud cover becomes part of the mood without overwhelming the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the tension between something once built for practical use and the landscape gradually reclaiming it. It is a quiet rural scene, but there is nothing tidy about it. The stairs are rigid, functional and repetitive; everything around them is wearing away. Paint has peeled from the brickwork. Dark streaks run down the steps. Patches of warm brown, grey, faded white and ochre shift across the walls, revealing layer after layer of use and exposure. Even the vertical column near the centre seems to separate two different histories of the same interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned industrial spaces because they are full of compositions that were never designed to be photographs. Nothing here was arranged for appearance. The staircase existed simply to move people from one level to another, yet once the factory fell silent, its shape became the dominant visual element. The strong diagonal gives the scene movement, while the worn brick and stained surfaces slow the eye down and reward a closer look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2008. What interests me now is the same thing that interested me then: the evidence of time. The structure remains recognizable and purposeful, but every surface carries the marks of age, neglect and weathering. By then, vegetation had begun to take over the entrance, weeds were pushing up along the base, and the garage door and narrow side window carried the wear of years. What fascinated me was the tension between neglect and design. The concrete-block walls are plain and utilitarian, yet the tiered parapet above them creates a strong geometric silhouette that refuses to disappear quietly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for the scene. Without colour, the photograph becomes about shape, surface, and contrast: pale masonry against dark foliage, the irregular panels of the old door, the deep window opening, and even the loose wire dropping down the facade. Nothing is polished. That is exactly what gives the photograph its character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am drawn to places like this because they are easy to overlook. They are rarely landmarks and almost never destinations. They simply sit beside the road until age, weather, and vegetation slowly change them. This little Indiana garage had reached that point where the ordinary had become distinctive. The thin steering wheel, long gear lever, old instrument cluster, worn bench seat, peeling surfaces, and branches reaching into the cab carry the story on their own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for the scene because so much of the photograph is about shape, texture, and deterioration. The sweeping curve of the door frame becomes a border around the interior, while the bright forest beyond the windshield pushes against the dark dashboard and steering column. Nature is visible through every opening, but it is also beginning to move inside.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most is not simply that the Dodge was abandoned. It is the strange intimacy of seeing a machine from the driver's position after its working life has ended. The controls remain recognizable. The seat is still there. Yet the cab has become part vehicle, part woodland debris. One massive concrete opening leads to another, then another, drawing the eye steadily through the abandoned factory until the architecture seems to disappear into darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this industrial ruin in Ontario, where years of neglect had stripped the interior down to its basic structure. Rough concrete columns dominate the foreground. Beyond them, worn floorboards, scattered debris, broken material and a large leaning panel interrupt what was once an orderly working space. There is very little left to soften the building. That emptiness is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the photograph is really about structure, texture and depth. Without colour competing for attention, the repeated rectangular forms become much stronger. Light catching the edges of the concrete separates each successive opening, while the darker recesses keep pulling the photograph farther back into the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been fascinated by abandoned places because they reveal architecture in a way occupied buildings rarely do. Once the machinery, people and daily activity disappear, the bones of the place become visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, those bones are almost geometric. The heavy vertical columns, horizontal beams and receding doorways create a surprisingly ordered composition inside a space otherwise defined by decay. The sun has pulled warm oranges, browns and silvers from the aged boards, while the pale grass spreads across the foreground and into the distance. Utility poles remain standing beside the buildings, adding another vertical rhythm to a place where almost everything else feels as though it is slowly returning to the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is the sky. It occupies nearly half the frame—clean blue broken by brilliant white clouds—and gives the photograph an openness that contrasts with the worn structures below. Instead of making the scene feel gloomy, the light exposes every crack, warped board and rough surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGhost towns fascinate me because they leave so much visible without explaining everything. Not simply an old building or wagon, but the peculiar stillness of a town that once had purpose and activity. The objects remain. The landscape remains. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. The corrugated metal roof had buckled and lifted away from its supports, while the long wooden porch sagged beneath a collection of objects that had simply been left behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat disorder is what caught my attention. Nothing about the building felt preserved or arranged. Weathered boards overlap one another, doors hang unevenly, windows sit behind rough shutters, and an old chair remains near the centre of the porch. The house seems caught somewhere between still being recognizable as a home and gradually becoming part of the landscape around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was secondary to what interested me—the warped metal, aged timber, deep doorway, rough grass and the extraordinary accumulation of texture across the facade. The darker treatment also gives the open interior a sense of depth without trying to make the scene artificially dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned places because time becomes visible in them. Its body is worn and faded, with the towing rig still rising behind it, while two smaller damaged vehicles sit close beside it. Farther back, another old truck is tucked beneath a simple roof beside a weathered wooden building. Nothing in the scene feels arranged. The vehicles, sheds, trees and rough ground have simply accumulated into a picture of use, neglect and passing years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was not what interested me here. The photograph is really about texture: aged boards, corrugated roofs, worn metal, grass and the dense canopy of trees surrounding everything. Removing the colour lets those surfaces and shapes carry more of the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the relationship between the vehicles and the buildings. Neither feels separate from the other. Together they suggest a rural working place that has changed gradually, leaving older machines and structures behind rather than clearing them away. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open. What I wanted to hold onto was the encounter itself: an old machine still visibly present in a place where weather and time have changed it. As wall art, it can suit someone interested in vintage vehicles, abandoned places or rustic photography. Their pale surfaces separate them from the brown slopes, but the buildings never fill the frame. I found that keeping them low in the composition made their isolation more apparent than a close view would have done.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe foreground is uneven with small patches of scrub. Behind the plant, the mountain carries larger folds, darker ridges, and touches of snow near the higher ground. Clouds hang across the top of the image, softening the light and keeping the palette restrained. Those layers lead from nearby vegetation to the factory, then into a much larger landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2010, recording the structures as they stood within that open space. The name belongs to the company, while the place is distinctly Californian. What holds my attention is the difference between the plant’s constructed shapes and the mountain’s irregular surfaces. One has cylinders, roofs, and narrow connections; the other spreads in broad slopes behind them. I do not know its earlier journeys or the circumstances in which it was left; the image stays with what remained in front of the camera. I included the rocky hills behind it, placing the damaged structure within the landscape where I found it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe trailer stretches horizontally across the middle of the photograph. That shape echoes the low ridge beyond it and the long bands of cloud above. Within the trailer itself, the lines are much less settled: upright supports, buckled siding, and pieces leaning against the end give the eye a more irregular route through the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe ground in front is open and rough, with small stones and sparse growth. It creates some distance between the camera and the trailer, so the structure can be seen as a whole. Trees and darker vegetation gather farther back, separating the pale roof from parts of the hillside.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn monochrome, the condition of the surfaces becomes especially clear. Light catches the curved roof and remaining panels, while the windows hold deep shadow. I wanted that physical detail to carry the photograph, together with the setting’s open space. The image preserves the trailer as it stood in 2009; its previous occupants and their lives remain outside what I can know from this view. Moss hangs in long, loose strands, crossing the upright trunks and partly veiling the branches behind. I waited for the mist to lift enough to reveal the mountains and for the wind to ease through the grass. What emerged was a quiet coastal scene in subdued colour, with the worn building almost folded into the ground around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIts timber front sits low beside the rock, while a faded red roof stretches toward the sea. Missing sections and exposed roof supports give the structure an uneven outline. I wanted to show that wear without letting it become the only subject. The dry grass and rough shoreline are part of the same view, connecting the little building to a much larger, less sheltered place.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBehind it, a pointed mountain rises through streaks of snow. Low cloud softens the higher ridges, and the water opens out to the right toward a paler gap between distant slopes. That arrangement gives the photograph its depth: close, weathered wood first, then water and mountains that seem to continue well beyond the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI have a soft spot for places where human effort is still visible against a demanding landscape. Here, the muted red is just enough to draw attention without breaking the restrained mood.
