Above the shoreline, the architecture is crisp and substantial; beneath it, the same lines become softer and more broken. The dark areas remain an important part of the composition, giving the scattered lights room to stand out without filling every corner of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, this view is less about the hotel as a destination than about Chengdu’s architecture after daylight fades. The ornament, balcony, and repeated openings offer a clear architectural structure, while the worn surfaces make its condition equally apparent. The central entrance draws me back after I have followed the balcony and window frames through the wider view. Someone drawn to urban decay or European architecture may appreciate that balance of warmth and damage. I like how the tub’s curves stand apart from the straight horizontal lines of the siding behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe window and chair make the arrangement feel specific. The chair’s narrow back rises above the rim, while the window sits slightly to one side. Cracks cross the concrete in the foreground, and shadows collect beneath the tub. The restrained background leaves room for the red to stand out, but its small irregularities keep the view from becoming too neat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat stays with me is the unanswered question of the placement. The photograph shows the scene without explaining why a bathtub belongs outside a motel. That visual puzzle gives the image its humor and character. Someone drawn to unusual Americana may enjoy that unexpected roadside encounter, while the strong red shape can be appreciated on its own. The blue letters stand strongly against the soft cream and peach tones of the wall. Above them, turquoise edges and pale window frames continue the lighter palette, while the glass introduces a deeper blue. The raised letters have visible thickness, giving the simple word a physical presence as well as a graphic one.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat I enjoy is the relationship between the bold sign and the quieter building around it. I was in Pontiac, Illinois, looking at the large Route 66 mural and the Wishing Well Motel sign beside it, when I noticed the highway shield reflected in the wet pavement. This black and white photograph grew from that unexpected second image at my feet.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI had been wandering and waiting for the rain to pass, rather than planning a particular composition. The mural already had a strong presence, with its huge numerals and curved shield painted across the brick wall. The reflection gave it another life, turning those bold shapes upside down among the small textures of the asphalt.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA separate Historic Route 66 emblem painted on the pavement sits beside the reflected mural. I like how those three versions of the road’s identity overlap: the wall, the ground marking and the image held in water. The motel sign and neighbouring brick building keep the photograph connected to a specific street corner, beyond the familiar symbol itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI chose monochrome to bring the surfaces and lettering together. Bright signs stand out against darker brick and wet ground, while the square frame keeps the two halves of the composition in conversation. I have travelled Route 66 with my camera looking for encounters like this. Two flags angle outward above the entrance, while poles and signs create vertical lines closer to the camera. These ordinary street details are part of the picture’s character. What interested me was how little surrounded it. A roofless section occupies the left side, while a larger building remains on the right. Between them are posts and fragments of the former site, with distant hills running along the horizon. The open space makes each surviving piece more noticeable.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI included the broad gravel foreground rather than moving in close to the walls. A discarded tire and small debris interrupt that space, but nothing fills it. Above the buildings, a band of white clouds stretches across a much larger expanse of sky. Those proportions give the photograph its sense of distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe painted lettering is still bold against the pale walls, even where the structure itself is damaged. I wanted the image to hold both of those qualities: a readable, graphic surface and a place visibly falling apart. I like how that turn makes the motel feel substantial even though it sits low in the frame. The tree interrupts its straight lines, and the clearer sky above leaves room for the roof and foliage to stand out. Rather than reducing the scene to a single damaged detail, I kept the pavement, building and surrounding growth together.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is an abandoned place recorded through the surfaces still visible: marks on the siding, uneven ground and windows that no longer offer a welcoming entrance. I am drawn to the contrast between the motel’s orderly shape and the less orderly textures around it. I like the way the two trunks interrupt that distance, giving the eye separate points to move between before reaching the motel.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbove the roof, the relatively clear sky opens up the composition. It contrasts with the busy ground and foliage, making the building’s modest scale more apparent. The black and white treatment brings the different surfaces into the same tonal range: pale walls, dark windows, rough bark and the irregular marks beneath them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis photograph appeals to me for its combination of plain architecture and unusual foreground shapes. The motel’s low form gives it a steady horizontal structure, while the trunks and vegetation make the scene less orderly. The surviving staircase, openings and wall surfaces give the eye a way through the room, even where loose material and broken fittings interrupt the floor. Light picks out the edges of the metal and the pale faces of the letters, leaving darker bands along the sides. The arrow crosses the main structure rather than sitting neatly beside it. Bright patches break across the brick paving and the raised edge of the sidewalk, changing shape as they move down the street. They provide a looser pattern beneath the straight lines above. Window arches repeat beneath decorative brick courses, while the lighter ground floor creates a broad change in tone. The entrance sits directly below the name panel, giving the composition a clear vertical connection from roofline to pavement. Along the right side, the exterior ladder and smaller openings add finer lines without displacing that central shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the details I could see while walking and looking through town: the relief in the masonry, the mix of pale and darker walls, and the way the corner joins two street fronts. Keeping a strip of road in the foreground gave the building room within its setting. The morning light separated the brick courses and window surrounds without losing the quieter marks on the facade. Curtains hang inside the upper windows, and a mannequin figure is visible at the right. At ground level, a wooden boardwalk separates the building from the street.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDawson felt welcoming during that visit, and people I met spoke about the old buildings with an affection that stayed with me. I wanted to keep the Flora Dora’s individual details clear without losing its overall arrangement. Standing straight in front gave the doorway and paired windows a balanced structure, while the uneven surfaces interrupted that balance in small ways. Monochrome makes those differences easy to follow: rubbed boards, darker gaps, worn lettering, and the edges of the window frames. I photographed the hotel in 2025, and the image carries something of those repeated walks through town. The black and white photograph brings together the tall HOTEL lettering and the broader Commercial Licensed sign beneath it. Bare branches fill the left side, while the building rises sharply along the right. It is a view of the street through one distinctive piece of its everyday architecture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI photographed the sign while walking this stretch of the city during my travels. From the sidewalk, its supporting arms become almost as prominent as the lettering. Horizontal bars, diagonal cables and a narrow ladder form a framework between the sign and the wall. The upper letters are widely spaced; below them, the word Commercial sits above the sweeping script of Licensed. Those different styles give the composition its rhythm. Brick courses and pale stone bands carry the eye upward behind the sign, with the windows following the same steep perspective.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was how much character survived in the details: small marks along the sign face, the visible tubing, the rounded ends and the strong metal supports. I kept the cloudy sky and the tangled branches in the photograph because they soften that rigid construction. The result suits a room where city photography and vintage signage have a place, particularly for someone with a connection to Edmonton. The hotel towers repeat the shapes of a New York skyline, with windows and setbacks providing smaller patterns within the larger forms.
