Smaller blue patches and pale streaks extend into the warmer ground on the left. Along the right side, rougher yellow earth forms a distinct boundary, giving the main shape a more defined edge. I chose a vertical composition because it suited that long, winding movement. It allows the eye to follow the channel while still taking in the mottled surfaces beside it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe colours drew me in immediately, but their variations are what keep me looking. Farther left, a longer blue area bends through rougher terrain, accompanied by several smaller pockets of colour. The golden ground separates those shapes while also connecting them through faint lines and changing textures. I wanted to include that space between the pools because it makes the photograph more than a study of any single feature. It shows a whole arrangement of forms, with each blue area contributing to the balance of the wider frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe overhead perspective removes the horizon and lets colour become the main guide. Small dark pools interrupt its rough surface, with a larger blue hollow toward the upper left. Pale deposits form an uneven border, separating the central textures from smoother orange areas at the sides. I liked the contrast between those broad expanses of colour and the dense detail within the basin. Keeping the composition close allowed the smaller pools and mottled patches to contribute without losing the larger shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis photograph is as much about the eye’s movement as it is about the landscape itself. I follow the blue down through the frame, then return along the changing pale edges. There are enough irregular forms to make each pass a little different. I wanted to keep that sense of space while giving the nearer pools enough presence to lead into the mountains beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDark mounds and shallow channels spread across the foreground, with pale water reflecting the sky between them. Beyond lies a lighter, flatter band before the land rises sharply. The central mountain has a broad upper edge and steep sides traced by fine lines, while a taller peak stands further left. Patches of snow and ice appear across the higher ground on the right. Above it all, clouds have both bright edges and darker centres, adding a second layer of shape over the ridged terrain.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white lets the small reflections and the mountain surfaces work together through contrast. The pools remain light within the darker ground, and the sunlit slopes carry detail even at a distance. I made the photograph during my travels in Iceland in 2022, stopping to work with the balance between the foreground and the rising land.
