I wanted the sculpture and the city behind it to work together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom this position, the polished surface bends Chicago into an entirely different landscape. Buildings stretch and curve across the steel, the horizon folds inward, and the people scattered through Millennium Park become tiny figures inside the reflection. Behind it, the rigid geometry of the surrounding architecture creates almost the opposite effect—straight lines, repeated windows and hard rectangular forms surrounding this enormous fluid shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in 2011 and chose black and white because it strips away much of the visual noise. What remains is shape, scale, architecture and reflection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI especially like the small human figures beneath the sculpture. Without them, it would be difficult to appreciate just how substantial Cloud Gate really is. What caught me was the separation between the dense architecture and the open darkness around it. The skyline is packed with towers, yet the water gives the photograph room to breathe. Reflections from the city lights break across the surface in narrow streaks of gold, white and blue, connecting the buildings to the lake without overwhelming the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like how little detail there is in the sky. That large expanse of darkness makes the illuminated architecture feel even more concentrated. Individual windows become part of the pattern, while the different heights and shapes of the towers create an irregular rhythm across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChicago is one of those cities where the architecture itself becomes part of its identity, and at night that becomes especially apparent. From across the water, the city feels both massive and surprisingly distant. Their repeated edges suggest a flowing movement, even though everything in the photograph is fixed. On the right, darker vertical divisions keep the geometry more direct. Between them, the balcony forms cross the frame in long horizontal sweeps. I concentrated on a small portion of Cloud Gate, letting its polished curve turn familiar architecture into something less predictable.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe sculpture itself is almost hidden by what it reflects. A broad, silvery band sweeps upward through the frame, carrying pale clouds and the outlines of buildings. Rows of windows remain sharply recognizable, yet their angles no longer behave quite as they would in a straightforward city view. Tall, narrow forms lean beside a broader facade, and dark sections give the lighter buildings a firm edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI wanted the photograph to sit between an architectural study and an abstract image. There is enough detail to recognize the city, but no broad view of the park or crowds to explain the scene immediately. Instead, the eye follows the meeting of blue sky, reflected glass and the sculpture’s curved surface. The diagonal composition makes that boundary feel active rather than simply decorative.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePhotographed in 2011, this is my close look at the relationship between Chicago’s skyline and Cloud Gate. The clear blue and restrained building colours keep the image open and bright. In this photograph, what interested me was not a single landmark but the way completely different buildings overlap, compete and eventually become part of one larger visual structure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI framed the scene tightly so the city almost becomes an abstract arrangement of windows, masonry, glass and repeating vertical lines. A modern office tower fills much of the background with a rigid grid of dark and light rectangles. In front of it, older buildings introduce completely different details—arched windows, decorative stonework, brick and ornament. Then another dark facade cuts sharply through the middle of the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat layering is what made me stop. Chicago contains so many architectural periods within a relatively compact downtown, and from the right viewpoint they can appear almost compressed together. One building partially hides another, while narrow gaps reveal fragments of structures farther back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white helped me concentrate on those relationships. Without colour, the differences become more about texture, geometry, light and scale. The windows repeat almost like patterns, while the older decorative surfaces interrupt that repetition in unexpected places.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often photograph architecture this way. Rather than stepping back to show an entire building, I look for combinations that reveal how a city has grown over time. There is almost no sky and no street, only layer after layer of Chicago architecture compressed into a dense arrangement of windows, structural lines and contrasting facades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI framed the photograph so the individual buildings begin to lose some of their identity. On the left, diagonal steel braces cut across a dark grid of windows. A much lighter facade dominates the centre with its relentless pattern of rectangular openings, while darker buildings close in from the sides. Near the bottom, smaller structures interrupt the repetition and a thin plume of steam rises from a rooftop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small detail matters to me. Without it, the photograph could almost become a study in pure geometry. The steam introduces something temporary into an otherwise rigid scene, a brief irregular shape surrounded by thousands of straight lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white strengthens that contrast. Colour would have separated the buildings in a different way, but monochrome allows the tones, patterns and architectural rhythms to become the subject. Some windows reflect light, others disappear into shadow, and the entire frame shifts between repetition and interruption.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often find Chicago most interesting when I stop trying to photograph complete buildings. By isolating fragments and allowing several structures to overlap, the city becomes something more abstract. The facade in Chicago had been reduced to a repeating sequence of narrow windows, dark vertical recesses and bright structural edges, with almost nothing left to identify the building as a whole.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat was exactly what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI framed tightly and allowed the architecture to run beyond every edge of the photograph. There is no roofline, entrance, street or surrounding skyline to establish scale. Instead, the repeated vertical lines take over the composition, broken only by the small projecting edges beside each window. Those interruptions create a second pattern running diagonally through the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white pushed the photograph even farther toward abstraction. Strong contrast separates the bright faces of the structure from the deep shadows between them, while the windows become narrow dark bands. From a distance, the building begins to resemble a carefully constructed graphic pattern rather than a conventional city scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChicago has always given me plenty to work with architecturally, but I am often more interested in fragments than complete buildings. A small section can reveal geometry, repetition and design that disappear when I step back and try to include everything.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, the subject is still unmistakably architecture, but for me the photograph is really about lines. Surrounded by enormous modern buildings, it could easily disappear, yet the narrow opening through downtown Chicago pulls my eye directly toward it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this view in 2011 while photographing the city’s architecture. Instead of concentrating on one skyscraper, I used the surrounding buildings to create a canyon of glass, steel, brick and repeating windows. The towers rise almost completely out of the frame, leaving only a narrow strip of sky and that much smaller structure standing at the end of the corridor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is an interesting shift in scale here. The buildings closest to me dominate through sheer size, but the distant tower becomes the visual destination. Its older form feels almost delicate against the broad grids and reflective surfaces around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white was important because the photograph is really about structure. Removing colour lets the window patterns, vertical lines, balconies and different architectural surfaces work together without distraction. Light moves differently across each facade, separating the buildings while still allowing them to become part of one dense composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChicago often gives me these layered architectural views, where buildings from different periods appear almost stacked against one another. I like that this photograph does not reveal itself all at once. First I see the canyon of skyscrapers. I caught it entering Chicago Harbor, passing the harbor light while the distant city sits almost as a silhouette across Lake Michigan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat drew me to the scene was the balance between all of those elements. The boat sits low against the water, the harbor light rises cleanly above the breakwater, and beyond them the Chicago skyline stretches across the horizon. Nothing dominates completely. Each part has its own space.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe warm light changed the atmosphere as well. Instead of the harder, more graphic character I often find when photographing Chicago architecture, this scene felt quieter. The water reflects just enough light to separate its surface, while the sky gradually shifts in tone above the harbor. Even the old wooden pilings in the foreground add another layer, giving the photograph depth before my eye reaches the tugboat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like working around active waterfronts because ordinary working vessels can become surprisingly strong photographic subjects. I framed the Wrigley Building slightly to the left, allowing the darker office tower on the right and the modern high-rise behind it to become part of the composition. The older architecture remains the obvious subject, but the surrounding buildings show how dramatically the city has changed around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white was a natural choice because the photograph is built around form, texture and tonal separation. The Wrigley Building catches the light differently from the darker facades nearby, helping its clock tower and decorative stonework stand forward in the frame. Rows of windows repeat across every building, but each structure handles that repetition in a completely different way.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed photographing cities where different architectural periods exist almost on top of one another. Chicago is especially good for that. A slight change of viewpoint can bring buildings from completely different eras together within a single photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this image is not simply a portrait of the Wrigley Building. Glass blocks form a long band overhead, and vertical U.S. Tires signs bracket the garage opening. The circular Deep-Rock sign adds a different shape near the upper left. These bold pieces of lettering tie the painted workshop to the automotive character that drew me along Route 66 in the first place.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the photograph frontal, including the pavement and small marks on the ground. What caught my attention was the structure above it—a disciplined grid of windows, vertical divisions and broad horizontal bands that turns this University of Chicago building into a study of repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the facade tightly, leaving out the street and most of the surrounding environment. That changes the scale of the building. Instead of reading immediately as a university campus, it becomes an arrangement of rectangles, dark windows and architectural lines. Only when my eye reaches the lettering across the lower section does the location reveal itself clearly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white made sense because colour would have added very little to what interested me. The contrast between the lighter exterior panels and deep window openings creates the rhythm. Strong sunlight adds another layer, throwing narrow shadows from projecting architectural details and giving an otherwise orderly facade more depth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often drawn to buildings this way. I do not necessarily need the entire structure to make an architectural photograph. Its irregular patterns sit inside straight vertical frames, creating a contrast between texture and order. Above, faded siding and dark lettering make another horizontal band. A narrow door on the right has its own repeated lines, while the wall between these features remains comparatively plain. I find the space around the windows important: it keeps their darker outline clear without removing the marks and wear that give the facade its character.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white connects the different surfaces through tone. The bench is darker than the wall, the window frames darker than the boards, and the ground carries a few fine cracks. None of those details needs to dominate for the building’s boarded condition to be visible. My interest was in the frontage as it stood before the camera, with the covered openings, empty bench and remaining lettering all present. The man’s yellow jacket and red backpack stand out near the lower right, while the much larger face carries softer pink and grey tones. A narrow strip of pavement remains along the bottom. That decision makes the structure itself the subject. Heavy diagonal braces cross through the frame, smaller members repeat behind them, and the signal lights sit almost buried inside the steelwork. The clearance sign—13 feet 7 inches exactly—becomes one of the few simple graphic elements in an otherwise complicated arrangement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white suited the photograph because colour was never what interested me here. The tonal range reveals the worn surfaces, rivets, grime and layered construction while the darker recesses give the structure real depth. The architecture has tremendous scale, yet it is built from one relatively simple shape repeated hundreds of times. Look closely and the balconies remain individual spaces. Step back visually and they become part of a much larger geometric structure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white suited the scene immediately. Without colour, the bright edges of the concrete balconies separate sharply from their darker interiors, while the clouds behind the towers add movement to an otherwise highly ordered composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChicago gives me endless architectural subjects, but Marina City is difficult to confuse with anywhere else. The clock tower has weight, texture and detail—arched windows, brickwork and the large circular clock faces—while the skyscraper behind it is almost the opposite. Its surface is a disciplined grid of glass and narrow structural lines. One feels solid and tactile; the other sleek and repetitive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe low viewpoint exaggerates that contrast. Both structures climb toward the open sky, while the long brick building sweeps diagonally across the bottom of the photograph. That angle gives the scene much of its energy and prevents it from becoming a straightforward record of the buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings the architecture together without hiding their differences. Brick, glass, windows and shadow become variations of tone and pattern, and the strong geometry begins to matter as much as the individual structures themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the things I enjoy most about photographing Chicago. From the ground floor, the stairwell curves upward in layers until the opening at the top forms an unmistakable eye-like shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat was the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI aimed directly upward and let the geometry fill the frame. Railings repeat around each level, sweeping from one side to the other, while the darker stair treads create a second rhythm underneath them. Everything eventually converges around the bright opening at the centre. Even the two ceiling lights become part of the composition, small circular interruptions inside all those long architectural lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I especially like is how quickly the staircase stops reading as a staircase. The practical purpose of the structure begins to disappear and the photograph moves toward abstraction. It can look like an eye, a lens or a series of concentric shapes, depending on where I let my attention settle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white strengthens that transformation. Without colour, the image becomes almost entirely about line, tone, symmetry and repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often look for architecture that changes when photographed from an unexpected position. This staircase did exactly that. Large letters curve into decorative flourishes, and an oval illustration occupies the left side. The design is detailed, but the wall keeps its own texture: rows of brick continue through the painted area rather than disappearing beneath it. I wanted that relationship between graphic design and physical surface to stay visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe parking lines offer a simpler pattern in the foreground. Their straight edges lead toward the wall, while a low barrier draws a horizontal boundary at its base. With no cars blocking the view, the mural can remain the clear centre of the photograph. I like these encounters in small Route 66 towns, where a short walk can bring me to a wall worth looking at slowly. Here, monochrome connects the elaborate paintwork with the plain geometry around it. Steel beams cross in every direction, heavy braces overlap one another, and thousands of rivets hold together an industrial framework that seems almost impossible to untangle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat complexity is what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI framed the photograph tightly so there is very little sense of the bridge as a whole. Instead, the individual pieces take over: massive vertical supports, diagonal bracing, weathered plates, ladders and dark openings that reveal still more steel behind them. Every part appears connected to something else, creating layer after layer of structure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white was essential here. Colour would have separated surfaces that I wanted to pull together. In monochrome, the photograph becomes about weight, texture, geometry and the contrast between worn metal catching the light and deep spaces disappearing into shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often more interested in industrial architecture when I can get close enough that its original purpose begins to disappear. From this perspective, the bridge becomes almost abstract. The repeated rivets turn into patterns. Diagonal beams cut through the frame. Small fragments of graffiti and weathered surfaces interrupt an otherwise uncompromising piece of engineering.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph reveals another side of Chicago—not the polished skyline, but the heavy industrial structures that remain woven into the city. Smaller signs bring in Farmers Union and Illinois Farm Bureau lettering, while a coffee illustration sits between the larger panels. At the lower right, a small Impala image overlaps the edge of the Coca-Cola sign. I liked how these different pieces fitted together without becoming one uniform surface. Their sizes, borders and type styles each hold a place in the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe weathering is as much a subject as the advertising. Dark patches interrupt the pale lettering, the large lower panel has an irregular edge, and the older surfaces carry marks that remain clear in monochrome. A strip of brick at the left and the pavement below give the display its street setting. For someone who enjoys Route 66, vintage advertising or American road trip photography, this image brings those interests into a single detailed view. The mural belongs to this wall and this particular piece of the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white changes the way I see it. Without colour, the painted figures begin to merge with the texture of the bricks underneath them. Some faces are immediately obvious; others take longer to discover. The hands above them are different again—large, simple forms hovering over a much denser collection of figures below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am drawn to street art because it can completely alter an otherwise ordinary piece of architecture. A blank side wall becomes the reason I stop, look more carefully and eventually make a photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, I wanted more than a record of the artwork itself. I was photographing from the water at the end of a Chicago architecture river cruise with my wife when the low cloud settled around the upper floors, leaving one of the city’s tallest skyscrapers without a visible ending.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat weather completely changed the photograph for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI composed vertically to exaggerate the height of the tower and keep the layers of downtown Chicago beneath it. The river forms a dark base across the foreground, while the Lake Shore Drive bridge cuts horizontally through the scene. Above it, glass residential towers and office buildings crowd together before the St. Regis rises sharply through the centre and vanishes into the fog.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the precision of the architecture and the uncertainty of the weather. Every window, edge and facade below is sharply defined, yet the upper section of the skyscraper gradually loses its form until there is nothing but cloud.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white made that transition even stronger. The glass buildings, steel bridge, water and heavy sky all fall into a restrained range of tones, allowing the scale and structure of the city to dominate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2024, and for me it captures one of those brief moments when familiar architecture becomes something completely different. I was drawn to the way Chicago seemed to fold back into itself here, with buildings rising behind the sculpture and then appearing again as distorted reflections across the steel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI framed the scene so Cloud Gate dominates the foreground while the skyline remains an essential part of the photograph. Historic and modern buildings stack tightly behind it, creating a dense architectural backdrop, but the curved reflection across the sculpture breaks that rigidity apart. Straight towers bend, lights stretch into arcs, and the city becomes almost fluid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe black and white treatment pushed the photograph further in that direction. Without colour, the relationships between glass, stone, steel and light become much stronger. The illuminated points around Millennium Park create small starbursts beneath the sculpture, while the darker buildings rise above them in layers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I especially like is the contrast between the precise architecture and the unpredictable reflection. The buildings are fixed and orderly, but Cloud Gate reshapes everything that reaches its surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that is what makes this photograph more than a straightforward view of a familiar Chicago landmark. This political poster in Chicago had already been torn, scraped and partially covered, yet the portrait, the name Kamala Harris and the large word FREEDOM were still clearly visible beneath all those deteriorating layers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was interested less in the poster as a political message than in what the street had done to it. Paper had peeled away in irregular sections. Older graphics appeared underneath. Marks, adhesive, scratches and fragments of other material had accumulated across the surface until the original design became part of something much less controlled.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat transformation is what interested me photographically.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI framed the poster tightly so there is almost nowhere else for the eye to go. The portrait remains the dominant element, but the torn edges and exposed layers continually interrupt it. Even the bold lettering across the bottom has begun to disappear, leaving the photograph balanced somewhere between documentary street photography and found urban abstraction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white emphasizes those textures. The distinction between printed image, damaged paper and the surface beneath becomes less obvious, and everything begins to merge into one weathered composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often find these temporary scenes more interesting than something designed to last. A political poster may begin as a carefully controlled piece of communication, but once it reaches a city wall, weather and time take over. Heavy storm clouds stretched across the entire skyline, pushing low over the buildings while Lake Michigan had already become dark and restless beneath them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat combination is what made me stop. The city itself occupies a relatively narrow band through the middle of the photograph, leaving much of the frame to the water below and the extraordinary cloud formation above. Downtown Chicago is still unmistakable, but for once the architecture is not completely in control.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the photograph to hold onto that sense of scale. The skyline becomes almost a dividing line between two very different surfaces—the textured water in the foreground and the enormous mass of clouds moving overhead. Small breaks of brighter sky appear behind the buildings, making the darker clouds feel even heavier.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white intensified everything I was seeing. Colour would have introduced another layer, but monochrome allowed me to concentrate on the shape of the clouds, the rough surface of Lake Michigan and the silhouette-like rhythm of the skyline.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWeather can change a familiar city faster than almost anything else. Buildings I have photographed many times suddenly look different when the light shifts and the sky becomes the dominant subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph is as much about the storm as Chicago itself. The city provides the scale. I was drawn to the immense sweep of the rim, the radiating spokes and the small passenger gondolas suspended around the outer edge at Navy Pier in Chicago.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI framed the wheel tightly and from below, allowing only part of the circle to enter the photograph. That incomplete view makes the structure feel larger than the frame itself. The hub pulls everything inward while dozens of steel lines fan outward, crossing and overlapping until the geometry becomes almost abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white was the obvious direction for me. Colour would have competed with the structure, while monochrome reduces the scene to steel, shadow and light. Against the dark sky, the illuminated edges of the wheel separate cleanly and the individual gondolas become small repeating forms around the curve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the tension between complexity and order. There are cables, braces, supports and spokes everywhere, yet every element has a precise purpose. Nothing is random.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNavy Pier is one of Chicago’s most recognizable destinations, but I did not want a conventional postcard view. I wanted to isolate the wheel itself and concentrate on the structure that usually disappears behind the experience of riding it. Inside, the cell bars and a worn wooden chair formed a view that made me pause with the camera. I photographed the room in 2022, looking at the contrast between the open foreground and the enclosed space beyond the ironwork. The arrangement was simple, but its lines and surfaces gave me plenty to work with.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe bars occupy most of the right side, repeating from floor to ceiling and crossing the narrower gate. Diagonal braces interrupt that regular pattern, while a small window brings light into the cell behind them. At the left, the chair sits against a pale wall with worn plaster near its base. Its rounded back offers a different shape from the upright iron bars. I kept the cracked floor visible below both, using its lines to connect the nearer space with the cell entrance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white emphasizes those contrasts without losing the smaller details. Highlights catch the gate and parts of the chair, while the darker cell remains visible through the bars. The rough wall and chipped surfaces give the photograph a texture that extends beyond the strongest architectural lines. What interested me most was how much a compact interior could contain within a single frame. As historic interior wall art, the photograph brings a Route 66 subject to an office or studio through structure and surface detail. It sweeps from the lower left toward the upper right, crossing a tall wall of glass that reveals buildings outside. I waited for the space to empty so the stairs and window grid could carry the composition. The curve gave the room a sense of movement even with nobody passing through it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe lower flight begins close to the floor, with pale railings repeating along its edge. Higher up, the underside becomes a broad dark shape against the brighter windows. A curved section of ceiling at the left echoes part of that form without matching it exactly. Beyond the glass, nearby facades and a more distant tower place the interior within Chicago. The floor reflects the window light in a soft vertical band, and its rectangular surface pattern adds another quieter rhythm beneath the stairs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings the architecture together through subtle differences in tone. The railings remain light and fine, the underside of the staircase is substantial and dark, and the window grid stays sharply defined behind both. I made this photograph in 2024, taking time with the empty room and its changing relationships of shape and light. What I like is how the stairs connect the different parts of the view: the floor below, the open room, and the city beyond the glass.
