It was completely out of place—a boat built for the water stranded inside an industrial building that was itself slowly falling apart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction made the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red paint had peeled away in long irregular streaks, exposing bare wood and traces of green underneath. Behind it, decades of wear had transformed the brick wall into layers of faded paint, stains and exposed masonry. Even the staircase seems to have become part of the decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition square and relatively tight because I wanted the boat and wall to become almost graphic. The diagonal of the hull cuts hard across the frame, while the staircase moves in the opposite direction. Against all those subdued browns, creams and grays, the remaining red paint refuses to disappear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this scene in 2006, not far from my studio in Ontario. I never learned how the boat ended up inside the factory, and I think I prefer not knowing. The mystery is part of what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph was later selected for publication in Black \u0026amp; White Magazine’s Colour Special Edition, which felt particularly appropriate. Color is essential here. Without that battered red hull, it simply wouldn't be the same photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSometimes the most interesting subjects aren't where they belong. This one is about what time did to a very small part of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this old automobile at a vintage car exhibition in Los Angeles, but I was far more interested in getting close than making a conventional photograph of the vehicle. The door had become its own landscape. Cobwebs stretched across the window and chrome. Paint had cracked and separated. Scratches, dust and years of deterioration covered surfaces that were once polished and carefully maintained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe old door handle became the centre of the photograph. Its chrome was damaged and dull, yet enough of the original shape remained to suggest the styling and craftsmanship of another era.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the detail in black and white because colour seemed unnecessary. What interested me were the textures—the fractured paint, strands of webbing, worn metal, curved trim and deep shadows. Up close, the automobile almost disappears and the photograph becomes something more abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to things that show their age rather than hide it. In Dresden, I watched the train move past the platform and wanted the photograph to hold onto the feeling of motion rather than freeze it into perfect detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe train dominates the composition as a series of horizontal red, white, and metallic bands. Its windows dissolve into a soft blur, yet the roof structure above remains sharp enough to give the image a rigid framework. I like that collision of movement and geometry. The ceiling grid, vertical supports, and platform edge create an ordered architectural setting, while the train seems to tear straight through it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is also something almost abstract about the photograph. The deep red body of the train carries most of the visual weight, broken by a clean white stripe and the softer glow of the windows below. Even without seeing a single passenger clearly, the image still feels occupied and alive because of the suggestion of movement behind the glass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in Dresden, Germany, in 2013. The weathered wooden boards are dark and worn, almost disappearing into the shadow of the doorway, while the surrounding brickwork carries an entirely different kind of presence: pale paint, stains, exposed masonry, cracks, and years of uneven decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this scene in Haliburton, Ontario, in 2008. It was one of those overlooked industrial corners that most people would pass without a second glance. I tend to stop at places like this because the surface tells the story. Here, the wall is not one colour or one texture. It shifts from deep brown brick to faded green, chalky white, and soft lavender-grey, with vertical streaks that seem to record years of rain and exposure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition works because of the tension between structure and collapse. The door and the vertical seams in the wall give the photograph order, but the broken bricks, splintered wood, and scattered rubble along the bottom edge interrupt that order immediately. Nothing is polished. Nothing has been cleaned up for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is exactly what interested me. It cuts diagonally across the brick wall, dividing the photograph into a series of rough geometric shapes while the repeating steps pull the eye upward into the darker corner of the factory.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat caught me was the collision between order and decay. The stairs are rigid, functional and repetitive; everything around them is wearing away. Paint has peeled from the brickwork. Dark streaks run down the steps. Patches of warm brown, grey, faded white and ochre shift across the walls, revealing layer after layer of use and exposure. Even the vertical column near the centre seems to separate two different histories of the same interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned industrial spaces because they are full of compositions that were never designed to be photographs. Nothing here was arranged for appearance. The staircase existed simply to move people from one level to another, yet once the factory fell silent, its shape became the dominant visual element. The strong diagonal gives the scene movement, while the worn brick and stained surfaces slow the eye down and reward a closer look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2008. What interests me now is the same thing that interested me then: the evidence of time. The structure remains recognizable and purposeful, but every surface carries the marks of age, neglect and weathering. One massive concrete opening leads to another, then another, drawing the eye steadily through the abandoned factory until the architecture seems to disappear into darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this industrial ruin in Ontario, where years of neglect had stripped the interior down to its basic structure. Rough concrete columns dominate the foreground. Beyond them, worn floorboards, scattered debris, broken material and a large leaning panel interrupt what was once an orderly working space. There is very little left to soften the building. That emptiness is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the photograph is really about structure, texture and depth. Without colour competing for attention, the repeated rectangular forms become much stronger. Light catching the edges of the concrete separates each successive opening, while the darker recesses keep pulling the photograph farther back into the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been fascinated by abandoned places because they reveal architecture in a way occupied buildings rarely do. Once the machinery, people and daily activity disappear, the bones of the place become visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, those bones are almost geometric. The heavy vertical columns, horizontal beams and receding doorways create a surprisingly ordered composition inside a space otherwise defined by decay. Without it, the frame would have been almost entirely about architecture and surface. Leaning against the sticker-covered post, it introduces a human scale and a sense of ordinary street life without anyone actually appearing in the scene. That contrast interested me: an elaborate Art Deco door beside something as familiar and practical as a bicycle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour would have competed with the extraordinary amount of detail. In monochrome, the eye moves more easily between the rough metal, the arrows, the round porthole-like windows, the stickers, the brickwork and the bicycle wheels. Repetition begins to take over. Circles answer circles, straight lines run against diagonals, and the bicycle seems almost designed to belong there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is that the photograph does not depend on a grand building or a famous landmark. It is simply a street detail that became visually complicated the longer I looked at it. Its weathered cylindrical tank and angular metal support frame stand in sharp contrast to the much larger building behind it, where rows of dark windows create their own repetitive pattern. Lower in the frame, rooftops overlap one another with vents, brickwork, skylights and industrial structures filling almost every available space.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour would have competed with what interested me most. This photograph is about form, texture and scale. The pale building facade becomes almost graphic, while the darker water tower separates itself clearly from its surroundings. Lines cross lines. Rectangles sit behind diagonals. Old materials exist beside newer construction without any attempt to make the city visually tidy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is one of the things I enjoy about photographing New York City. There is always another layer. Something utilitarian can become the strongest element in the frame simply because of where it sits and how the surrounding architecture organizes itself around it. I made this colour photograph in 2016 during the Luminato International Arts Festival, when the former generating station became a setting for the arts.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI did not have my usual camera with me that day. Even so, the building’s lines and textures were too compelling to pass by. The view draws inward toward the far wall, with diagonal supports crossing the vertical framework and dark open spaces beneath the foreground platforms. The structure has a strong sense of depth, despite the number of overlapping details.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is the contrast between order and wear. The steel follows a clear engineering logic, but its surfaces carry darker marks and warmer, weathered tones. Light reaches parts of the interior unevenly, revealing some sections while leaving others in shadow. Those changes give the geometry a heavier, more atmospheric character.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe festival visit adds a personal memory to a photograph that otherwise centres on the architecture. I like the meeting of an industrial space and a cultural event, without needing to show the event itself. For someone interested in Toronto’s Port District, former power stations or industrial photography, this print offers an interior view with intricate structure. Nearer the image, overlapping letters and shapes become more distinct, alongside the texture of mortar and weathered walls. The rooftop setting gives those marks a different presence from graffiti seen directly at pavement level.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen I took this photograph, it was that transformation of a familiar urban space that held my attention. The rounded roof, open window spaces and remaining panels hold together as a single subject, while fallen bodywork sits lower in the foreground. There is very little shine left. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open. What I wanted to hold onto was the encounter itself: an old machine still visibly present in a place where weather and time have changed it. As wall art, it can suit someone interested in vintage vehicles, abandoned places or rustic photography. In California’s eastern Sierra landscape, I photographed the abandoned Pittsburgh Plate Glass soda ash operation with enough distance to include the low scrub, pale buildings, and broad slopes behind them. This color image is as much about the setting as the industrial structures: the land gives the plant its scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTall cylindrical forms rise above a cluster of lower roofs, with connecting equipment making a thin outline against the mountain. Their pale surfaces separate them from the brown slopes, but the buildings never fill the frame. I found that keeping them low in the composition made their isolation more apparent than a close view would have done.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe foreground is uneven with small patches of scrub. Behind the plant, the mountain carries larger folds, darker ridges, and touches of snow near the higher ground. Clouds hang across the top of the image, softening the light and keeping the palette restrained. Those layers lead from nearby vegetation to the factory, then into a much larger landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2010, recording the structures as they stood within that open space. The name belongs to the company, while the place is distinctly Californian. What holds my attention is the difference between the plant’s constructed shapes and the mountain’s irregular surfaces. One has cylinders, roofs, and narrow connections; the other spreads in broad slopes behind them. Faded reds, pale lettering, and rust-brown metal form a muted colour palette. Some surfaces are deeply scarred; others still carry readable logos. The contrast between those surviving words and the surrounding wear is a large part of the photograph’s appeal for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRather than isolate one pump, I kept the crowded arrangement intact. The diagonal railroad crossbuck cuts across the straighter pump faces, while the low chassis gives the foreground a broad horizontal shape. The roof presses down above everything, making the collection feel contained without making it orderly. There is always another piece to find behind the first one.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is the accumulation of familiar roadside forms. These were practical objects, designed to direct travellers or serve vehicles, and their lettering still gives them a distinct presence. In the photograph, they also become an arrangement of texture, shape, and worn colour. Below it, a narrow strip of trim runs along the side and leads toward the circular lamp. The bumper is rougher and paler, with dark marks breaking up its surface. I like how the surviving design lines remain clear even where the finish has deteriorated. The car’s shape and its condition are both visible at once.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKeeping the composition tight makes the different textures easier to compare. Glass, metal trim, faded paint, and the worn lower edge respond differently to the light. Small bright patches draw attention across the hood, while deeper shadows around the wheel give the lower part of the picture weight. This photograph records the car as I encountered it in 2011. I do not know its earlier journeys or the circumstances in which it was left; the image stays with what remained in front of the camera.
