Away from the grand façades and familiar landmarks, I found this quiet architectural corner—a dark wooden door, a narrow flight of stone stairs and layers of weathered brick rendered in black and white.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the structure of the scene. The stairs rise sharply through the centre of the photograph toward another doorway, while pipes, railings, windows and exposed brick break the surrounding walls into a collection of lines and textures. Nothing is perfectly polished. The stone floor is worn, the masonry is irregular, and the surfaces carry the marks of long use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt natural here. Without colour, the photograph becomes more about light, geometry and material. Bright stone steps stand against the darker brickwork. The two doors anchor opposite levels of the composition, while the diagonal staircase creates movement through what is otherwise a very still scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are the details I often remember most from Venice. The city is filled with extraordinary architecture, but much of its character exists at a more intimate scale—in entrances, passages, steps and walls that people move past every day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph is about that quieter Venice. I made this photograph after dusk, when the intense Roman daylight had disappeared and the ancient stone was taking on a much darker, quieter character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was able to set up my tripod on the terrace of Colosso Metro Cafe in 2010. From that elevated position, the Colosseum sweeps across the right side of the frame, its repeating arches gradually disappearing into shadow. The open sky above it remains remarkably simple, filled with warm amber light that gives the entire scene an almost monochromatic quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the contrast between the scale of the structure and the small signs of contemporary Rome surrounding it. People gather near the base, the road crosses the foreground, and buildings rise in the distance, yet the Colosseum still overwhelms everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI deliberately allowed the mood to become darker than the familiar sunlit views of Rome. Deep shadows fill the arches, the weathered stone catches the remaining light, and the broad empty sky creates a sense of space around a monument normally surrounded by visual activity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat was the photograph I wanted—not simply a record of the Roman Colosseum, but a quieter view of it after the day had begun to disappear. Passenger boats crowd the waterfront, tied between heavy wooden mooring posts, while one small boat cuts across the foreground and gives the scene a sense of movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the layering. The water occupies the lower edge, then comes the boats, the old facades, rows of shuttered windows and finally the domes and bell towers rising above the rooftops. Everything is compressed into a dense horizontal band beneath an almost featureless sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe soft mist changed the way the city looked. Instead of the saturated colour and hard Mediterranean light often associated with Venice, the scene became quiet and nearly monochromatic. Architectural details remain visible, but nothing feels overly sharp or aggressive. The atmosphere softens the entire waterfront.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always liked Venice most when it stops behaving like the postcard version of itself. Around it, trees and waterfront buildings form a lower, irregular line, while the water opens up the foreground. I photographed this view of the Tempio Votivo on Venice’s Lido in 2005, drawn to the way one strong architectural shape could hold together a whole stretch of waterfront.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the setting to remain part of the photograph. Pulling back gave the temple room among the surrounding buildings instead of isolating it as a single monument. Its rounded dome and upright columns stand clearly above the treeline, but the smaller structures along the shore contribute their own rhythm of roofs, windows and shaded walls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the foreground, a series of markers breaks up the rippled surface of the lagoon. Their spacing leads the eye across the water toward the shore, creating a quieter counterpoint to the detail in the architecture. The grey sky gives the dome a simple backdrop and leaves the waterfront as the busiest part of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings those relationships forward. I’m interested in the contrast between the temple’s ordered form and the softer textures of foliage and water, and in how much breathing room this view allows. That distance matters to me. It leaves room for the road, neighbouring buildings and dark outlines of trees, placing the amphitheatre within the city that surrounds it. The repeated arches supply a steady pattern against the less predictable lines of passing traffic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA long exposure turns that movement into bands of light. Individual vehicles become less important than the paths they trace, and the road takes on a brightness that the surrounding streetscape doesn’t share. Streetlights punctuate the darker areas, while the sky remains subdued enough to let the lit stone and traffic stand out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’m drawn to the different kinds of time visible here. The building holds its shape throughout the exposure; the vehicles leave only a record of their movement. Keeping both in the composition gives the scene its character. Here, the light separates one rise from another without losing the gentle connection between them. The colours stay close to the land: muted greens, earthy browns and a warm sky, with cooler tones appearing in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph’s appeal lies in that balance of openness and detail. I photographed these hillside homes on Capri, Italy, during a summer visit in 2005. In black and white, their pale walls, dark windows and layered terraces become a close study of how the town meets the island’s terrain.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe composition holds several different scales together. Nearby facades show arched openings and smaller architectural details, while taller trees rise between the buildings. Behind them, a steep rocky hillside fills the upper background. I like that the landscape remains part of the picture even though the architecture occupies much of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eExploring Capri’s alleys and winding streets gave me many changing viewpoints. This one kept my attention because of the way the homes overlap. Rooflines and balconies lead from one building to another, and the trees soften the more regular edges.
