Instead of everyone rushing through one of the busiest places in Manhattan, people simply sat down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is crowded, but it doesn't feel frantic. People lounge in folding chairs, talk, watch the street or simply sit by themselves. Behind them is unmistakable Times Square—yellow taxis, pedestrians, construction equipment, traffic lights, towering buildings and an almost absurd concentration of signs and advertising. Even the New York Police Department station is buried within the visual chaos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like photographs where there isn't necessarily one person who is the subject. Here, the people collectively become the subject. My eye can wander around the frame and discover dozens of small moments happening simultaneously.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph also has a personal connection for me. Later, during a workshop with legendary New York photographer Jay Maisel, I showed him this image. He stopped on it and commented on the uniqueness of the moment. That stayed with me because uniqueness is exactly what had made me raise my camera in the first place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTimes Square has been photographed millions of times. Finding a different photograph there is considerably harder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a brief period that summer, one of the world's most recognizable symbols of urban movement became somewhere people could simply pull up a chair and do absolutely nothing. The faded yellow wall is interrupted by remnants of turquoise paint and the deep red of the original window frame. Then the details begin to take over. Broken panes have been covered with mismatched pieces of wood. Sections of the wall have fallen away completely, exposing bricks and rough construction underneath. Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. Tall windows have been patched with mismatched pieces of wood, paint has faded into layers of yellow and green, and laundry hangs openly across the upper floor. Then, at precisely the right moment, a man on a bicycle entered the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small figure changed the photograph for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis red shirt immediately separates him from the muted colors of the building, while the bicycle gives movement to an otherwise completely static facade. He is dwarfed by the architecture behind him, yet my eye goes directly to him. Without the cyclist, I would have a photograph about an aging Havana building. With him, it becomes a photograph about life continuing around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like the contrast between the grandeur the building must once have possessed and the way it is being lived in now. Ornamental columns and decorative details remain, but so do crumbling plaster, boarded windows, exposed masonry and improvised repairs. Laundry hanging above the street makes the building feel inhabited rather than abandoned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are the scenes that keep drawing me back to street photography. I can find the location and recognize the possibilities, but I can't manufacture the moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture gave me the setting. Havana gave me the color and texture. A blue station wagon fills the foreground while an open-top classic car travels ahead, its passengers visible above the deep red bodywork. Another old car appears farther down the street. Together they lead my eye directly into the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is how naturally these remarkable vehicles fit into the scene. In almost any other city, a car like this would attract attention at a show or sit polished in someone's collection. In Havana, these aging American cars are woven into everyday life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture matters just as much. Tall, weathered buildings press closely against the narrow street. Balconies, old stonework, barred windows, overhead wires and traditional street lamps surround the cars. Nothing feels staged or arranged for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like the restrained color in this photograph. The faded blue of the station wagon and the dark red convertible stand apart from the pale, timeworn buildings without overpowering them. The cars provide the color; Havana provides the texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about photographing Cuba. History never seemed confined to museums or monuments. What holds my attention is the relationship between the Black Church and everything surrounding it. The building is monumental, but it is not isolated. Roofs, chimneys, trees, narrow gaps between houses, and the steep hillside all crowd into the frame, creating the feeling of a city built in layers over a long period of time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subdued light is important here. There is no dramatic sunset and no bright blue sky competing with the architecture. Instead, the muted atmosphere lets the warm roof tiles, dark stone, and soft greens of the hillside settle into one restrained palette. The clock face and tower become natural points of focus without needing to be exaggerated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Black Church is one of Brasov’s defining landmarks, but I wanted the photograph to show more than the building alone. By keeping the surrounding rooftops and mountain in the composition, I could place it within the city rather than separate it from the place that gives it context. Here, the wall is not one colour or one texture. It shifts from deep brown brick to faded green, chalky white, and soft lavender-grey, with vertical streaks that seem to record years of rain and exposure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition works because of the tension between structure and collapse. The door and the vertical seams in the wall give the photograph order, but the broken bricks, splintered wood, and scattered rubble along the bottom edge interrupt that order immediately. Nothing is polished. Nothing has been cleaned up for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is exactly what interested me. Nothing here was arranged for appearance. The staircase existed simply to move people from one level to another, yet once the factory fell silent, its shape became the dominant visual element. The sun was already pushing through the mist, but instead of clearing it immediately, the light spread softly across the sky and water. Trees along both banks became dark silhouettes, while a distant bridge appeared almost weightless in the centre of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water was remarkably calm. Only small ripples disturbed the surface, catching fragments of warm light beneath the brighter sky. From the boat, there was very little sense of movement beyond the quiet lapping of water. The usual detail of the landscape had disappeared into the mist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted the photograph to preserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than emphasizing the bridge or shoreline, I allowed the atmosphere to dominate. The darker trees frame the scene naturally, guiding the eye toward the opening in the distance, while the warm reflection on the water balances the bright morning light above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlorida is often photographed for colour, beaches and intense sunlight. This was something much quieter. Several watchtowers punctuate the wall as it travels across the rugged terrain, creating a visual rhythm that carries the eye from the foreground deep into the photograph. Beyond them, successive mountain ridges become softer and increasingly blue with distance until they almost dissolve into the hazy sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subdued light was important. There was no dramatic sunset or brilliant colour competing with the landscape. Instead, the muted conditions allowed the shape of the mountains and the extraordinary path of the wall to become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStanding there, I was conscious of the enormous scale of what I was looking at. From a distance the Great Wall can appear almost delicate, a narrow line following the contours of the land, yet the closer sections reveal its physical weight and construction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast fascinated me. Human architecture occupies the landscape, but the mountains remain dominant. The first arch is massive and heavy, filling most of the frame, yet every opening beyond it becomes progressively smaller. The eye has nowhere else to go. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colour was equally important. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. Light entering the corridor catches certain surfaces while others fall into shadow, giving each successive arch its own subtle separation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often photograph architecture for exactly this reason. A structure can become something entirely different when I stop looking at the whole building and concentrate on one repeating element. From here, the city spreads outward in layers—flat rooftops, faded facades, church domes, water tanks, weathered masonry and buildings from different periods all compressed into one dense urban landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe large rust-coloured dome on the left immediately anchors the view. From there, my eye moves through cream, yellow and white buildings toward the smaller orange dome near the centre, then across a maze of red roof edges, patched surfaces and occasional flashes of turquoise and green. Nothing feels perfectly ordered. That is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHavana often photographs beautifully because age is visible everywhere. Surfaces have faded, buildings have been altered, and the rooftops show years of use and adaptation. Yet ornate architecture still rises through all of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the photograph to hold that contradiction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pale sky gives the city just enough breathing room, while the foreground remains crowded with texture and detail. From a distance, the photograph reads as a broad Havana cityscape. There is no dramatic landmark and almost no colour demanding attention. Instead, the photograph depends on atmosphere—the dense fog, the muted dawn light, the isolated trees and the broad areas of open water and sky. Even the distant shoreline seems uncertain, appearing and disappearing as the mist thickens across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition became a study in restraint. Most of the landscape has been stripped away, leaving the house and trees suspended between water and fog. Fog changes familiar places quickly. Their scale immediately changes the character of the neighbourhood around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to photograph both murals together rather than isolate either one. That wider view mattered. Between them are hedges, railings, road signs, pavement, windows and rows of modest homes. These everyday details give the murals context and show how completely they are woven into the surrounding streetscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast weather helped. Colour was already subdued, and I kept the treatment restrained so the large figures and graphic shapes would remain visually dominant. The red clothing on the right-hand mural survives against an otherwise muted scene, drawing the eye across the frame without overwhelming everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the stillness. There were no crowds gathered in front of the murals and nothing staged for the camera. The street simply continued around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDerry contains history in unusually visible ways, and here it occupies the walls of residential buildings rather than a separate exhibition space. This color image is as much about the setting as the industrial structures: the land gives the plant its scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTall cylindrical forms rise above a cluster of lower roofs, with connecting equipment making a thin outline against the mountain. Their pale surfaces separate them from the brown slopes, but the buildings never fill the frame. I found that keeping them low in the composition made their isolation more apparent than a close view would have done.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe foreground is uneven with small patches of scrub. Behind the plant, the mountain carries larger folds, darker ridges, and touches of snow near the higher ground. Clouds hang across the top of the image, softening the light and keeping the palette restrained. Those layers lead from nearby vegetation to the factory, then into a much larger landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2010, recording the structures as they stood within that open space. The name belongs to the company, while the place is distinctly Californian. What holds my attention is the difference between the plant’s constructed shapes and the mountain’s irregular surfaces. One has cylinders, roofs, and narrow connections; the other spreads in broad slopes behind them. A change in light and a rising breeze soon broke the clearer reflections into ripples. This photograph preserves the interval before that happened, when the buildings could be read both above and below the waterfront. The reflected forms are not as precise as the originals, and that difference gives the lower part of the frame its own texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat mattered to me was the relationship between town, hillside, and water. None sits apart from the others: homes gather at the river, the church rises behind them, and the reflection connects the built shore to the foreground. The result has depth at several distances: dark ledges close to the camera, more visible roots and trunks in the middle, and a brighter, finer pattern of trees beyond. Fallen leaves add another texture between the larger forms.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis view is about the forest’s footing as much as its height. The trees give the eye a route upward, but the layered rock keeps bringing attention back to where they stand. I enjoy the tension between those two directions. Following a ledge across the frame reveals a root, and following that root returns the view to a trunk. For this photograph, made in 2022, a close composition lets those details carry the image.
