What holds my attention is the relationship between the Black Church and everything surrounding it. The building is monumental, but it is not isolated. There is no dramatic sunset and no bright blue sky competing with the architecture. Instead, the muted atmosphere lets the warm roof tiles, dark stone, and soft greens of the hillside settle into one restrained palette. The clock face and tower become natural points of focus without needing to be exaggerated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Black Church is one of Brasov’s defining landmarks, but I wanted the photograph to show more than the building alone. By keeping the surrounding rooftops and mountain in the composition, I could place it within the city rather than separate it from the place that gives it context. Hore Abbey, near Cashel in County Tipperary, had enough presence on its own. I photographed the medieval stone complex in black and white beneath a broad overcast sky, letting its broken walls, central tower, arches, and rough masonry carry the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy wife and I came across the abbey while travelling through Ireland in 2019, only about a 15-minute walk from the much better-known Rock of Cashel. That contrast stayed with me. The Rock draws the attention, yet just beyond it sits this extraordinary ruin in the open countryside, quieter and far less imposing in the way it announces itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is built around that sense of isolation. A wide field separates me from the structure, while the empty sky gives the abbey room to stand almost as a piece of sculpture. The surviving walls still reveal the shape of the original Gothic church, but sections have collapsed into irregular stone forms. In black and white, those textures become more pronounced: weathered blocks, dark openings, broken rooflines, and the soft grass surrounding them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHore Abbey began as a Benedictine monastery before passing to the Cistercians in the 13th century, becoming the last pre-Reformation Cistercian foundation in Ireland. From a distance, the individual buildings almost disappear into one enormous pattern of colour, repetition and density.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat visual compression is what fascinated me. There is barely any empty space. One structure sits above another, then another, climbing relentlessly across the hillside. Most share the same deep red and brown tones, but small flashes of green, turquoise, yellow and brighter crimson appear in windows, doors and fabric, breaking up the repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scale is difficult to understand until I start looking closely. Every small rectangle is a home. Paths wind between them, buildings lean into the contours of the land, and the settlement seems to have grown organically rather than according to any simple grid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLarung Gar sits at roughly 12,500 feet, and its isolation was part of what made being there so memorable for me. Yet photographically, I kept returning to the visual structure of the place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the frame to feel almost overwhelming—to let the homes fill it completely, without sky or distant landscape providing relief. For me, that density is the photograph. Its weathered wooden facade, narrow pointed windows and small bell tower have a simplicity that feels almost severe, particularly beneath the enormous blue sky surrounding Bodie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this building in 2009 while exploring the preserved ghost town. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. The immense central dome anchors the scene, while four slender minarets climb into a warm evening sky. Their amber lighting separates them from the deepening shadows below and gives the entire structure a remarkable presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept a generous amount of sky in the composition because its colour mattered. Soft orange and brown tones spread across the upper half of the frame, creating a restrained backdrop rather than competing with the architecture. Below, the modern city remains visible in layers of rooftops, windows and scattered lights, giving the mosque both scale and context.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was that relationship between the monumental and the everyday. The mosque dominates the skyline, yet it is still embedded within the dense fabric of Istanbul rather than standing apart from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDusk is often when a city changes character most quickly. Details disappear, artificial lights begin to define the architecture, and familiar buildings take on a completely different weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat transition is what I wanted to hold onto here. Pulling back gave the temple room among the surrounding buildings instead of isolating it as a single monument. Its rounded dome and upright columns stand clearly above the treeline, but the smaller structures along the shore contribute their own rhythm of roofs, windows and shaded walls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the foreground, a series of markers breaks up the rippled surface of the lagoon. Their spacing leads the eye across the water toward the shore, creating a quieter counterpoint to the detail in the architecture. The grey sky gives the dome a simple backdrop and leaves the waterfront as the busiest part of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings those relationships forward. I’m interested in the contrast between the temple’s ordered form and the softer textures of foliage and water, and in how much breathing room this view allows. The reflection never became entirely rigid, and that is part of its appeal. Small ripples break the rows of windows into shorter marks, while the tower remains recognizable even as its lower outline bends. There is enough movement to distinguish the water from the architecture above it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe waterfront buildings make a broad base for the taller church tower. Their repeated windows and pale walls carry detail across the center of the composition, with darker roofs and trees giving that band a varied edge. Above, open sky leaves room around the tower; below, the darker foreground water gives its reflection a clear place to end.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI chose monochrome because the scene’s structure mattered most to me. Upright stonework, repeated windows, and reflected lines can be followed without color competing for attention. The different greys allow the rough wall, smooth-looking patches, and deep shadows to remain distinct without competing colour. Boats sit along the crossing and waterfront, and their pale shapes interrupt the darker water. On the opposite bank, the illuminated mosque and its slender minarets draw my eye upward. Buildings crowd behind them, climbing towards another group of domes on the skyline. I kept the foreground roofs in the frame because they add a nearer layer before the view opens across the water.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eColour holds those layers together. The warm light along the bridge and shore leaves broken reflections on the water, while the orange-brown sky gives the distant architecture a quieter backdrop. I wanted the photograph to include the city’s ordinary density as well as its more recognizable landmarks. The small buildings, vessels and roads make the larger view worth exploring. Pale green curves separate and connect the groups of figures. I was drawn to how those lines guide the eye from one scene to another, making the surface feel both ordered and densely varied.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere is a great deal to notice within the close view. Some figures stand alone, others gather in small groups, and little architectural forms appear among them. Hands, faces, garments, and borders each add another level of detail. Below them, the wall becomes increasingly difficult to separate from the leaves and stems covering it. I framed the building from the graveyard, bringing a row of differently shaped headstones into the foreground. Their upright forms repeat the tower on a smaller scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe square composition holds that upward movement without excluding the grass at the base. Dark foliage gives weight to the left side, while clouds leave more open space around the tower. In monochrome, the texture of the stones, the mass of ivy and the markings on the headstones become parts of the same tonal landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI found the meeting of ruin and growth compelling here. The church remains recognizable, but its edges soften where plants take over. Rather than assigning stories to the people commemorated in the graveyard, I wanted to show the place as I encountered it. I photographed the chapel facing its tall front, where two slender towers rise on either side of the pointed window arch. Their repeated height and the more intricate shapes between them give the building a strong outline against the cloudy sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWithin that outline, the stonework becomes much more detailed. Narrow window divisions rise and branch near the top, while small decorative forms continue along the roofline above. Below the glass, the entrance has its own pointed arch and carved surround. I like how the photograph offers those different scales of looking: the whole façade first, then the finer patterns within the window and doorway. The black and white treatment makes the pale stone and darker glass distinct without separating them from the rest of the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI left some of the setting around the chapel. A large tree occupies the left side, neighbouring buildings appear to the right, and a broad lawn lies in front. Their lower shapes allow the towers to remain prominent, while the clouds keep the sky from becoming an empty backdrop. Looking at the finished photograph, my attention returns to the balance between the two towers and the single large window. I kept the neighbourhood broad in the photograph rather than isolating the church. Houses, trees and roads build several layers below it, while low clouds give the sky a darker presence. The spire offers one clear vertical line within the much wider spread of buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe lights are what help me move through the scene. Small bright points appear along roads and between the rooftops, with several forming sharp starbursts. They make the nearer streets distinct from the more distant rows of houses without turning the photograph into a view of one road alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA grassy slope crosses the foreground, and trees partly hide the buildings behind them. Beyond that first layer, a road curves through the neighbourhood. I like how its lighter surface connects separate areas of the picture, allowing the eye to travel past the nearest houses toward the church and the farther skyline.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings the rooftops, lights and clouds into a shared range of tones. Brighter breaks in the sky remain visible between heavier cloud forms, while the pale house fronts stand apart from darker roofs and trees. What interests me is the neighbourhood as a whole. I wanted to create a religious photograph with a close, artistic view, so I cropped the image around the head, upper body and outstretched arms. The wider church interior remains outside the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe crown of thorns and lowered eyes hold the focus, with strands of hair and the beard adding smaller carved shapes around them. Behind the figure, the dark cross creates a strong horizontal and vertical structure. It separates the warmer tones of the statue from the pale background, making the close view easy to read. I like how the arms extend towards the edges while the face remains the most detailed part of the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI gave the photograph a warm orange treatment and a worn, textured appearance. That choice was intended to feel artistic while remaining respectful to my religious faith. The colour brings the pale background and the figure into a shared range of gold and brown, with deeper shadows around the hair and cross. My photograph stays close to the statue’s visible details rather than describing the whole church.
