This old Chevrolet was one of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found the weathered truck near Zion National Park, sitting beneath an extraordinary Utah sky as the last light spread pink, violet and orange across the horizon. The truck had everything I look for in an old vehicle—faded turquoise paint, exposed rust, dents, worn chrome and the kind of patina that cannot be manufactured convincingly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chevrolet 3100 badge remains visible on the side, while the broad grille and rounded fenders immediately place the truck in another era. A spare tire rests against the side, and behind it the Sinclair sign introduces another piece of roadside Americana. Beyond that, the desert cliffs rise from the landscape, catching just enough remaining light to separate them from the evening sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat made me stop, though, was the combination of the truck and the sunset. Either subject could have carried a photograph on its own. Together they created something much more evocative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to vehicles that show their age honestly. Perfect restorations can be beautiful, but this truck had history written across every surface. A vintage car sits above the salon, Route 66 shields appear across the facade, and an old Route 66 Grill sign still stands beside the neighbouring building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eColour is a huge part of the photograph. The salon is painted in soft pink, cream and yellow, with bright magenta and green stripes running across the front. Next door, turquoise trim and faded peach walls add another layer of Southwestern character. All of it sits beneath an enormous, intensely blue Arizona sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep the wider street scene rather than isolate a single sign or detail. The empty road, chain-link fence, old vehicles, weathered signage and trees behind the buildings help place the salon within the slightly improvised visual language of historic Route 66.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what has always interested me about this highway. The attraction is not one particular landmark. It is the accumulation of diners, garages, motels, old cars, handmade signs and businesses that developed their own personalities to catch the attention of passing travellers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDeSoto's Salon had that personality in abundance. Instead, it becomes part of the roadside arrangement: a rounded roof above rough timber, glass rectangles behind upright boards, and a line of colour beneath the grasses.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe fence reveals some parts and hides others. That partial view is important to me. It leaves the bus’s outline visible while making the surrounding place feel equally present. A utility pole and overhead lines add a second set of straight lines, contrasting with the finer, less regular growth behind the fence.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe colour gives the photograph much of its balance. Dry gold vegetation occupies the middle, grey and pale surfaces gather below it, and blue opens the view above. This is a quiet California roadside scene rather than a polished image of a restored vehicle. At the left edge, a window and smaller signs make the setting feel particular rather than anonymous. Those surrounding details give the advertisement a place on a building without distracting from its central lettering.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis photograph brings together two things that hold my attention on the road: old commercial design and the visible effects of weather. The beer sign is bold enough to be noticed first, but its surface rewards a closer look. For someone who enjoys Route 66 or vintage advertising, the image offers recognizable roadside character. A pale rim crosses its top, the sides curve inward toward the feet, and patches of missing paint break up the red surface. Those marks give it texture without disguising its form. I like how the tub’s curves stand apart from the straight horizontal lines of the siding behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe window and chair make the arrangement feel specific. The chair’s narrow back rises above the rim, while the window sits slightly to one side. Cracks cross the concrete in the foreground, and shadows collect beneath the tub. The restrained background leaves room for the red to stand out, but its small irregularities keep the view from becoming too neat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat stays with me is the unanswered question of the placement. The photograph shows the scene without explaining why a bathtub belongs outside a motel. That visual puzzle gives the image its humor and character. Someone drawn to unusual Americana may enjoy that unexpected roadside encounter, while the strong red shape can be appreciated on its own. There is always another piece to find behind the first one.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is the accumulation of familiar roadside forms. These were practical objects, designed to direct travellers or serve vehicles, and their lettering still gives them a distinct presence. In the photograph, they also become an arrangement of texture, shape, and worn colour. That practical detail does not spoil the illusion for me. They remain visible on both sides of the central doorway, beneath an awning and a much larger faded signboard. I photographed the frontage straight on, keeping the building’s simple symmetry clear despite its worn condition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe window arrangement is orderly, but the surfaces around it are not. Paint and lettering have worn away across the sign, the awning is mottled, and tall grass rises along the base of the shop. Damaged latticework leans at the right edge. I find those irregular details important because they break up the repeated rectangles without obscuring them. The clothes are darker than much of the facade, so they continue to draw the eye even among all the surrounding marks and textures.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTrees form a dense background behind the roofline, while a narrow strip of road grounds the scene at the bottom. Black and white brings the different surfaces into a shared range of tones, with pale panels contrasting against the dark windows and foliage. My photograph leaves the whole frontage in view so that the remaining display and the building’s deterioration can be seen together. Green paint around the lower doors and windows gives the building another strong colour, while the black lettering makes its former purpose immediately visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe openings are different sizes, arranged beneath a roofline that rises above the centre of the facade. Some panes are covered with boards, and the green paint is worn along the frames and base. Dry grass gathers in front of the building, adding a rougher texture below its straighter lines. I find the contrast between the large, simple sign and those smaller details especially appealing. The words are easy to read at a glance, but the weathered frontage offers more to inspect.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTree shadows fall across the pale wall, linking the building to the branches visible on the left. The blue sky leaves a broad open area above, giving the lettering and stepped roofline room to stand out. My photograph uses that straightforward view to bring together colour, typography and architectural wear. There are no vehicles in the frame to distract from the shop itself. What interested me was the collection of objects along the front: a chest of drawers, a small bicycle, a ladder and tall cylinders beside the windows. They give the low building a particular character, making the frontage more than a simple row of doors and openings.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe architecture stays close to the ground, with a nearly level roofline and a broad area of bare earth in front. A red-brown door sits near the centre, while curtains cover some windows and boards cover others. I like the differences between those sections. They prevent the long facade from feeling uniform, even though the building’s overall shape is straightforward. The weathered cream wall connects them through a shared colour and texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA tall antenna rises above the roof near the right side, its fine horizontal lines standing against blue sky. Darker clouds gather across the left, giving the upper part of the photograph a different rhythm from the building below. My colour view keeps the muted browns and creams of the frontage alongside that stronger blue. The objects, worn surfaces and antenna are the details I wanted to retain together. The long side stretches across the left of the photograph, while the darker brick frontage faces the space on the right. I like how that turn makes the motel feel substantial even though it sits low in the frame. The tree interrupts its straight lines, and the clearer sky above leaves room for the roof and foliage to stand out. Rather than reducing the scene to a single damaged detail, I kept the pavement, building and surrounding growth together.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is an abandoned place recorded through the surfaces still visible: marks on the siding, uneven ground and windows that no longer offer a welcoming entrance. I am drawn to the contrast between the motel’s orderly shape and the less orderly textures around it.
