I found this one while walking the city—a battered old window surrounded by cracked plaster, exposed masonry, peeling paint and years of improvised repairs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was the color that first pulled me in. The faded yellow wall is interrupted by remnants of turquoise paint and the deep red of the original window frame. Then the details begin to take over. Broken panes have been covered with mismatched pieces of wood. Sections of the wall have fallen away completely, exposing bricks and rough construction underneath. Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. I am drawn to surfaces that have accumulated years of weather, repairs, marks and human contact—the kind of wall that becomes more interesting the longer I stand in front of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this one in southern India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA small wooden door sits almost unexpectedly within an enormous weathered wall. At first the scene seems overwhelmingly blue, but the closer I looked, the more colors began to emerge. Violet and faded red remain in the door. Pale markings and scratched graffiti wander across the wall. Stains run vertically through the surface, while patches of old paint reveal layer after layer underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is that tiny plant growing directly beneath the doorway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love details like that. Against this massive, scarred surface, a few green leaves introduce something alive and temporary. The door itself feels almost absorbed into the wall, as though both have been aging together for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene straight on because I wanted very little interpretation between me and what I had found. The wall becomes the composition. Texture, color, scratches, stains and imperfections become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing India so much. Extraordinary photographs don't always announce themselves. This one is about what time did to a very small part of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this old automobile at a vintage car exhibition in Los Angeles, but I was far more interested in getting close than making a conventional photograph of the vehicle. The door had become its own landscape. Cobwebs stretched across the window and chrome. Paint had cracked and separated. Scratches, dust and years of deterioration covered surfaces that were once polished and carefully maintained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe old door handle became the centre of the photograph. Its chrome was damaged and dull, yet enough of the original shape remained to suggest the styling and craftsmanship of another era.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the detail in black and white because colour seemed unnecessary. What interested me were the textures—the fractured paint, strands of webbing, worn metal, curved trim and deep shadows. Up close, the automobile almost disappears and the photograph becomes something more abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to things that show their age rather than hide it. The structure is still recognizable, yet vines have pushed across the roofline, tall grasses crowd the foreground, and sections of the lower wall have opened enough to expose the dark framework beneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Ontario and kept the composition vertical so the barn rises out of the tangled vegetation rather than sitting neatly apart from it. That relationship matters to me. The weathered boards, broken edges, leaning lines, and dense growth all compete within the frame, while the open space on the right gives the eye somewhere to move before returning to the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph because the subject is really about texture and structure. Removing color puts more emphasis on the grain of the wood, the pale grasses, the mass of leaves climbing over the barn, and the deep shadow inside the damaged lower section. Even the heavy cloud cover becomes part of the mood without overwhelming the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the tension between something once built for practical use and the landscape gradually reclaiming it. It is a quiet rural scene, but there is nothing tidy about it. In black and white, those textures become even more pronounced. The dark stones, pale walls of the house, grasses, flowers, and heavy sky separate into layers rather than competing through color.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sky changed the character of the photograph completely. Broad, dark clouds stretch across most of the frame, giving the relatively quiet countryside scene a sense of weight and drama. Below them, the house feels almost stark in its simplicity. Smaller homes, stone boundaries, and the narrow road continue into the distance, but they remain secondary to the relationship between the cottage and the wall surrounding it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was how much structure existed in what initially appeared to be a simple rural scene. The wall is not merely a foreground element. Here, the wall is not one colour or one texture. It shifts from deep brown brick to faded green, chalky white, and soft lavender-grey, with vertical streaks that seem to record years of rain and exposure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition works because of the tension between structure and collapse. The door and the vertical seams in the wall give the photograph order, but the broken bricks, splintered wood, and scattered rubble along the bottom edge interrupt that order immediately. The sweeping curve of the door frame becomes a border around the interior, while the bright forest beyond the windshield pushes against the dark dashboard and steering column. Nature is visible through every opening, but it is also beginning to move inside.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most is not simply that the Dodge was abandoned. It is the strange intimacy of seeing a machine from the driver's position after its working life has ended. The controls remain recognizable. The seat is still there. Yet the cab has become part vehicle, part woodland debris. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. Some window panels remain dark while others appear almost white, breaking the repetition just enough to keep the pattern from becoming too perfect. At the centre, the small lock and metal hardware become an understated focal point amid all those larger rectangles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always found doors photographically intriguing because they are both architectural objects and boundaries. They suggest another space without revealing very much about it. Two maple leaf emblems sit high on the gables, subtle but unmistakably Canadian. Signs advertising fishing rod rentals and departure times add another layer, revealing that these simple structures remain practical places rather than merely picturesque buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also liked the irregularity of the row. The sheds overlap and step backward from one another, each slightly different in size and proportion. Utility poles and overhead wires interrupt the clean geometry, while the wet pavement and subdued sky give the scene the quiet atmosphere of a damp Maritime day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is nothing grand about these buildings, and that is precisely why I stopped. They are functional, weathered and ordinary, shaped by years of exposure and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, Prince Edward Island is not only beaches and red cliffs. Scenes like this reveal another side of the island—working buildings, fishing traditions and architecture created because it was needed. Beyond that, the desert cliffs rise from the landscape, catching just enough remaining light to separate them from the evening sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat made me stop, though, was the combination of the truck and the sunset. Either subject could have carried a photograph on its own. Together they created something much more evocative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to vehicles that show their age honestly. Perfect restorations can be beautiful, but this truck had history written across every surface. The water was nearly motionless, carrying soft reflections downward and doubling the few shapes that remained visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to how little the scene needed. There is no dramatic landmark and almost no colour demanding attention. Instead, the photograph depends on atmosphere—the dense fog, the muted dawn light, the isolated trees and the broad areas of open water and sky. Even the distant shoreline seems uncertain, appearing and disappearing as the mist thickens across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition became a study in restraint. Most of the landscape has been stripped away, leaving the house and trees suspended between water and fog. Their reflections are imperfect and elongated, just strong enough to connect the shoreline to the darker foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMornings like this are one reason I like being out with a camera before the landscape fully wakes. Fog changes familiar places quickly. Details vanish, distances become difficult to judge, and ordinary subjects can take on an entirely different presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me here was that sense of quiet uncertainty. The photograph does not reveal very much, yet it gives the eye room to wander through the mist. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. Nothing about the building felt preserved or arranged. Weathered boards overlap one another, doors hang unevenly, windows sit behind rough shutters, and an old chair remains near the centre of the porch. The house seems caught somewhere between still being recognizable as a home and gradually becoming part of the landscape around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was secondary to what interested me—the warped metal, aged timber, deep doorway, rough grass and the extraordinary accumulation of texture across the facade. The darker treatment also gives the open interior a sense of depth without trying to make the scene artificially dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned places because time becomes visible in them. The house occupies only a tiny portion of the photograph. Everything else is distance, scrubland and clouds. Without colour, the scene becomes quieter and more elemental. The pale ground, dark vegetation and small geometric buildings sit beneath layer after layer of clouds, some soft and distant, others heavy enough to dominate the upper half of the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArizona is often photographed through dramatic rock formations and intense desert colour, but this scene offered something very different. It was sparse. Almost empty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been attracted to landscapes where scale can be felt immediately, and this was one of those places. At the centre, a pair of worn wooden doors sits beneath patterned glass, while heavy planks cross the windows on the left. Nothing is perfectly aligned. That irregularity is precisely what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the building straight on because the facade already had a strong structure. Vertical support beams divide the frame, horizontal boards create repetition, and the central doorway gives the photograph an anchor. Behind the glass, patterned curtains remain visible, introducing an unexpectedly delicate detail among all the heavy timber and weathered surfaces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white concentrates everything on texture. Splintered boards, cracked plaster, worn paint and dark gaps between the timbers become more important than colour. The building feels tactile, almost as though every surface has recorded another season of exposure and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me about rural architecture is rarely perfection. I am much more drawn to buildings that reveal how they were made, altered and repaired over time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis farmhouse had that quality everywhere. The boards, doors and windows do not feel decorative; they feel practical and accumulated. I found this scene while travelling the side roads and minor highways of the southern United States, where a cluster of old wooden buildings and discarded vehicles had slowly become part of the rural landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe GMC tow truck in the foreground immediately caught my attention. Its body is worn and faded, with the towing rig still rising behind it, while two smaller damaged vehicles sit close beside it. Farther back, another old truck is tucked beneath a simple roof beside a weathered wooden building. Nothing in the scene feels arranged. The vehicles, sheds, trees and rough ground have simply accumulated into a picture of use, neglect and passing years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was not what interested me here. The photograph is really about texture: aged boards, corrugated roofs, worn metal, grass and the dense canopy of trees surrounding everything. Removing the colour lets those surfaces and shapes carry more of the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the relationship between the vehicles and the buildings. Neither feels separate from the other. Together they suggest a rural working place that has changed gradually, leaving older machines and structures behind rather than clearing them away. Inside, lace curtains soften those straight lines. A vase of flowers brings a cluster of brighter colours into the lower part of the window, while the cat is tucked close to the bottom, easy to miss on a first look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI liked that the photograph asks for a little attention. The peeling paint is immediately visible, but the interior takes longer to read. Reflections across the glass mingle with the curtains and flowers, letting the street and the room overlap without revealing everything inside. The cat gives that layered scene a living presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged for the camera. I stopped to observe what was already there, keeping the window and the surrounding wall together in the composition. Colour is essential to the result: the warm yellow exterior, cool reflections above and flowers below make each part distinct. The rounded roof, open window spaces and remaining panels hold together as a single subject, while fallen bodywork sits lower in the foreground. There is very little shine left. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open. What I wanted to hold onto was the encounter itself: an old machine still visibly present in a place where weather and time have changed it. As wall art, it can suit someone interested in vintage vehicles, abandoned places or rustic photography. The shingles retain their repeated pattern even as their surfaces weather; the truck has lost parts but still has a recognisable outline. Dry grasses, scrub, and scattered wood place the cottonwood within its surroundings. The warm earth tones echo the leaves, while the blue above provides a much cooler contrast. Fine white clouds spread through the open space between the upper branches.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe tree’s form becomes more interesting as you follow it upward. Its trunk bends and divides into irregular limbs, some carrying only small patches of foliage. Dark bark and knots remain visible even from a distance. I like the way that rough structure stands beside the softness of the autumn colour without either becoming secondary.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe vertical composition gives the cottonwood enough room to show both its height and its sideways reach. It also keeps the view anchored in the desert floor, where the colour is more subdued. Instead, it becomes part of the roadside arrangement: a rounded roof above rough timber, glass rectangles behind upright boards, and a line of colour beneath the grasses.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe fence reveals some parts and hides others. That partial view is important to me. It leaves the bus’s outline visible while making the surrounding place feel equally present. A utility pole and overhead lines add a second set of straight lines, contrasting with the finer, less regular growth behind the fence.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe colour gives the photograph much of its balance. Dry gold vegetation occupies the middle, grey and pale surfaces gather below it, and blue opens the view above. This is a quiet California roadside scene rather than a polished image of a restored vehicle. I photographed it near my Haliburton studio in 2007, drawn to the roots spreading across a wet granite wall. This black and white forest photograph brings the Canadian Shield into close view, where the grain of weathered wood meets the rough surface of stone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe tree had died long before I arrived. What remained was enough to hold my attention: a pale trunk rising out of the frame, roots reaching sideways, and dark rock filling the space around them. The close composition lets those shapes carry the photograph without a distant landscape competing for attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI was also interested in the marks carved into the stump. They introduce a human trace into a scene shaped by the forest, adding another kind of weathering to the wood. The contrast between those small marks and the broad, uneven granite is part of what keeps me looking.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLight catches the trunk and roots while the damp rock settles into deeper tones. That range gives the image its weight, but the branching lines keep it moving.
