When I photograph skyscrapers, I’m not simply pointing at architecture—I’m chasing the mood of a skyline at dusk, the rhythm of repeating windows, and the contrast of old façades holding their ground beside the modern giants. Each piece in this fine art series reflects a different angle on city life, capturing both power and fragility in structures that touch the clouds. If you’ve ever paused on a busy street to look up, you’ll know the feeling I’m after—an awe that reminds us how small we are and how high we dream.

Layers of Manhattan Architecture Rising Through the City

New York can become almost abstract when I stop looking at individual buildings and concentrate on how they fit together.

In this photograph, I compressed a dense section of Manhattan into a series of vertical layers. In this photograph, blur stretches their lines into soft vertical bands, turning an architectural view into something more fluid. I kept the blue and grey palette gentle, with light gathering near the lower center and the tallest forms reaching toward the edges.

Some building details remain visible through the softness. Window grids and narrow ribs define the nearer facades, while other areas dissolve into translucent streaks. I like that balance between recognition and abstraction. Towers on both sides lean inward within the frame, and the central building rises through the open space between them. The blur adds another rhythm to those lines, making the city feel less fixed. A faint lavender warmth near the light gives the cooler blue a little variation without changing the overall mood.

For me, this image is about the sensation of standing among tall buildings rather than describing a skyline from a distance. In this black and white photograph of New York’s World Trade Center, I look upward along the illuminated facade, following rows of projecting architectural elements as they narrow toward the top of the frame. The city around it falls away, leaving a tightly ordered arrangement of light, shadow, and perspective.

The lower edge is full of detail. Bright horizontal bands cross long vertical channels, while angled surfaces create a succession of dark wedges. Those forms repeat across the width of the image, but they do not look identical: the upward view changes their apparent size, and the light gives each surface a slightly different tone. I like the way that variation keeps the repetition alive.

Farther up, the same lines grow smaller and merge into a darker, denser texture. I made the image near Times Square at sunset, framing the reflected buildings closely enough that their familiar outlines became waves of colour. The result keeps the structure of the city while changing the way we see it.

Each pane bends a small part of the neighbouring architecture. Straight edges appear to ripple, and repeated windows stretch into uneven shapes. Across that movement, the facade’s own grid remains visible. Fine dividing lines and a broad, steadier band through the middle hold the composition together, giving the eye a clear structure beneath the restless reflections. I like that tension: the building is orderly, yet the city it reflects seems to be shifting from one panel to the next.

The warm and cool colours give the photograph its energy. Yellow and orange surfaces glow against dark outlines, while blue sections offer pockets of depth along the edge. Smaller green and red areas interrupt the larger fields of colour, making the close view more intricate than it first appears. I chose to let those details fill the frame, without a street or skyline to explain the scene. This view of the Manhattan skyline, made in 2009, now feels like a record of the city at a particular moment. The Empire State Building rises on the right, while a dense wall of towers fills the frame beneath a heavy, unsettled sky.

What caught me was the compression of the skyline. From across the water, the buildings seem packed together almost without space between them, creating a layered study of New York architecture rather than a single landmark portrait. The small boat crossing the foreground gives the scene scale and keeps the city from becoming completely static.

Black and white suited the weather and the structure of the photograph. The clouds have real weight, the water carries a rough texture, and the buildings break into hundreds of windows, vertical lines and dark geometric blocks. Without colour, my eye moves between those patterns more easily, eventually landing on the familiar profile of the Empire State Building.

The year matters here. In this colour photograph, blue sky opens across the left side while reflected towers rise along a steep diagonal. I concentrated on a small portion of Cloud Gate, letting its polished curve turn familiar architecture into something less predictable.

The sculpture itself is almost hidden by what it reflects. A broad, silvery band sweeps upward through the frame, carrying pale clouds and the outlines of buildings. Rows of windows remain sharply recognizable, yet their angles no longer behave quite as they would in a straightforward city view. Tall, narrow forms lean beside a broader facade, and dark sections give the lighter buildings a firm edge.

I wanted the photograph to sit between an architectural study and an abstract image. There is enough detail to recognize the city, but no broad view of the park or crowds to explain the scene immediately. Instead, the eye follows the meeting of blue sky, reflected glass and the sculpture’s curved surface. The diagonal composition makes that boundary feel active rather than simply decorative.

Photographed in 2011, this is my close look at the relationship between Chicago’s skyline and Cloud Gate. Rounded windows and pale brickwork fill the left side, while straighter facades rise beside and behind them. I made this photograph in 2011, drawn to the city’s density and the way different buildings can share a view while keeping their own character.

The curved corners provide the strongest repeated shape. Each floor carries a band of windows around the bend, with a narrow railing following the same line. Beside them, a smaller dark building has a different scale and a few ornamental details. Farther back, the window patterns become straighter and more regular. I like moving between those rhythms. A tiled roof, a small balcony or a bright window catches the eye briefly, then the larger lines carry it onward. Light falls across parts of the pale facade, adding another pattern that passes over the brick and glass.

There is very little open space in this photograph. The buildings fill the view, so texture, tone and shape provide the sense of depth. For me, it captures something familiar about Manhattan: the feeling of looking at several different places at once within a small part of the city. As wall art, it may suit an office, study or living room with an interest in architecture. It can also appeal to someone who enjoys New York photographs that stay close to everyday building details. In this photograph, what interested me was not a single landmark but the way completely different buildings overlap, compete and eventually become part of one larger visual structure.

I framed the scene tightly so the city almost becomes an abstract arrangement of windows, masonry, glass and repeating vertical lines. A modern office tower fills much of the background with a rigid grid of dark and light rectangles. In front of it, older buildings introduce completely different details—arched windows, decorative stonework, brick and ornament. Then another dark facade cuts sharply through the middle of the composition.

That layering is what made me stop. Chicago contains so many architectural periods within a relatively compact downtown, and from the right viewpoint they can appear almost compressed together. One building partially hides another, while narrow gaps reveal fragments of structures farther back.

Black and white helped me concentrate on those relationships. Without colour, the differences become more about texture, geometry, light and scale. The windows repeat almost like patterns, while the older decorative surfaces interrupt that repetition in unexpected places.

I often photograph architecture this way. On the left, diagonal steel braces cut across a dark grid of windows. Near the bottom, smaller structures interrupt the repetition and a thin plume of steam rises from a rooftop.

That small detail matters to me. Without it, the photograph could almost become a study in pure geometry. The steam introduces something temporary into an otherwise rigid scene, a brief irregular shape surrounded by thousands of straight lines.

Black and white strengthens that contrast. Colour would have separated the buildings in a different way, but monochrome allows the tones, patterns and architectural rhythms to become the subject. Some windows reflect light, others disappear into shadow, and the entire frame shifts between repetition and interruption.

I often find Chicago most interesting when I stop trying to photograph complete buildings. Instead of concentrating on one skyscraper, I used the surrounding buildings to create a canyon of glass, steel, brick and repeating windows. A passenger boat near the shore gives the city’s much larger forms a clear sense of scale.

I am drawn to the variety of the rooflines. Rectangular towers and fine window grids sit beside smaller, more elaborate silhouettes, while One World Trade Center rises with its narrow spire farther back. A narrow strip of trees marks the waterfront, and the rippled river supplies an open foreground.

I waited for softer shadows and light along the glass surfaces. The appeal for me is in the relationship between the familiar skyline and the waterfront architecture in front of it, each retaining its own shape and scale.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/New-York-Pier-57-and-Empire-State-Building-Black-and-White-Photography-1.jpg?v=1792035806
man-looking-at-jaume-plensa-crown-fountain
Man Facing Chicago Crown Fountain Black and White Street Photography

A Small Figure Beneath a Monumental Screen Face

A man stands near the lower left corner of the Crown Fountain tower, looking upward toward the enormous face displayed above him. Above it, the facade changes direction in a broad wave before meeting the pale, clouded sky.

I spent time circling the building because even a small change in my position rearranged what appeared on its surface. The soft light held detail in both the glass and its darker divisions, giving me room to work with the reflections without losing the tower's outline. I like how this composition asks the eye to move between two sets of architecture: the surface close to the camera and the city carried inside it. The repeated ribs keep the view ordered, while the mirrored buildings add a second layer to discover.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2025

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Seoul-Skyscraper-Reflections-Black-and-White-Architectural-Photography-1.jpg?v=1792235510
japan-tokyo-modern-skyscraper-and-shrine-roof-contrast-black-and-white-architecture
Tokyo Shrine Roof and Glass Tower Black and White Architecture Photography

Tiled Roof Lines Beneath a Curving Tokyo Tower

Two kinds of repetition meet in this Tokyo architecture photograph. Rows of tiles rise diagonally across the foreground, while a glass tower fills the space behind them with a much larger grid. I photographed the traditional shrine roof and modern building in black and white, allowing their surfaces, angles, and reflections to become the subject rather than competing colours.

I noticed the composition while wandering the city streets and looking both up and down for details. The roof offered a strong base: closely spaced tiles, bright edges, and dark gaps that create a dense rhythm across the lower part of the frame. Above it, the tower’s rounded corner gathers the horizontal bands into a broad curve. Reflections of nearby architecture break up the glass on the right, introducing another pattern within the facade. I kept the view tightly framed so the meeting of these buildings would remain immediate, without a wide street scene explaining it away.

What I enjoy here is the difference in scale. The roof can be read tile by tile, while the tower seems to extend beyond the photograph. Yet the repeating lines give the two structures a visual connection, making the contrast more subtle than simply placing an older building beside a newer one. Monochrome draws out that connection and lets the dark roof stand firmly against the lighter glass. For someone drawn to Japanese architecture or geometric urban photography, this image offers a close study of Tokyo’s layered buildings and the unexpected compositions that appear when I slow down and look between them.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2025

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Tokyo-Shrine-Roof-and-Glass-Tower-Black-and-White-Architecture-Photography-1.jpg?v=1792328266
st-regis-chicago-skyscraper-fog-black-and-white
St. Regis Chicago Skyscraper in Fog Black and White Photography

Chicago River Skyline Beneath a Tower Disappearing Into Cloud

The top of the St. Regis simply disappeared. For this view, I looked out from high above Lower Manhattan as lights began to define the streets and buildings below. The Brooklyn Bridge runs across the East River near the centre, with the Manhattan Bridge farther behind it and Brooklyn extending toward the horizon. I chose a vertical composition to connect the towers close to me with those more distant layers of the city.

The foreground buildings make a dense arrangement of narrow windows, pale facades, rooftops, and shadowed streets. Their upright forms contrast with the diagonals of the bridges, which carry the eye out across the water. Boats and wakes introduce smaller shapes in the river, while the neighbourhoods beyond become progressively finer in scale. I liked how the scene could be followed from the nearest architecture all the way to the distant lights, without losing the East River as a clear dividing space.

Black and white let me concentrate on those structures and changes in tone. Bright faces and points of light stand against the darker street grid, and the river provides room between the tightly packed districts. As New York wall art, this photograph offers a strong vertical image for an office, living room, or study. It holds the skyline and bridges together while leaving smaller rooftops, windows, and intersections to reveal themselves on a closer look.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Manhattan-Towers-and-East-River-Bridges-Black-and-White-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791980502
lower-manhattan-skyline-one-world-trade-center-black-and-white
Lower Manhattan Waterfront Skyline Black and White Photography

One World Trade Center Above Rippling Water And Clouds

Open water gives me a little distance from Lower Manhattan in this black and white photograph. The skyline stretches across the frame, with One World Trade Center rising above the close gathering of buildings. I like seeing the city at this scale: individual towers remain recognizable, but their shapes also join into one complicated waterfront profile.

The water makes a rough, dark band beneath the architecture. Its small ripples break up the surface in a way that contrasts with the windows and straight edges beyond it. Above the buildings, thin clouds spread across the sky, with a longer pale streak lifting toward the right. Those changing textures keep the photograph from being only a study of vertical lines.

I gave the skyline space above and below rather than filling the frame with buildings. That choice lets the eye follow the variations in height, from the lower waterfront structures to the tallest tower. The crowded middle of the photograph has a rhythm of its own, interrupted by spires, cranes, and gaps between buildings.

Black and white brings that rhythm forward. The pale faces of some towers separate from the darker ones beside them, and the city stays legible against the sky. For me, this view holds two familiar qualities of New York together: the concentration of its architecture and the surprising openness available when I look back toward it across the water.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Lower-Manhattan-Waterfront-Skyline-Black-and-White-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791967689
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/collections/Skyscraper-Photography-Collection-763104-5993519.jpg?v=1763060566
