That was what drew me to this scene—the ordinary rush of Manhattan transformed by wet pavement and darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed from the sidewalk, looking down a corridor of tall buildings toward the traffic beyond. Taxis and cars crowd the street, a city bus works its way through them, and a few pedestrians move through the foreground. Yet the people remain almost anonymous, reduced to dark silhouettes against the reflected light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat makes the photograph work for me is the depth. The repeating streetlights gradually become smaller as they disappear down the avenue, pulling my eye deep into Manhattan. Above them, scattered office windows punctuate the darkness. Below, the wet sidewalk carries that light back toward the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white strips away the competing colors of New York and concentrates everything on light, shadow, movement and reflection. The brightest headlights become almost white against the surrounding darkness, while large portions of the buildings disappear into deep shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed photographing cities after rain. Familiar streets become more cinematic, but nothing about the moment needs to be staged. Instead of everyone rushing through one of the busiest places in Manhattan, people simply sat down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is crowded, but it doesn't feel frantic. People lounge in folding chairs, talk, watch the street or simply sit by themselves. Behind them is unmistakable Times Square—yellow taxis, pedestrians, construction equipment, traffic lights, towering buildings and an almost absurd concentration of signs and advertising. Even the New York Police Department station is buried within the visual chaos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like photographs where there isn't necessarily one person who is the subject. Here, the people collectively become the subject. My eye can wander around the frame and discover dozens of small moments happening simultaneously.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph also has a personal connection for me. Later, during a workshop with legendary New York photographer Jay Maisel, I showed him this image. He stopped on it and commented on the uniqueness of the moment. That stayed with me because uniqueness is exactly what had made me raise my camera in the first place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTimes Square has been photographed millions of times. Finding a different photograph there is considerably harder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a brief period that summer, one of the world's most recognizable symbols of urban movement became somewhere people could simply pull up a chair and do absolutely nothing. They weren't posing for me. One leaned forward with a drink held between his hands while the other sat back against the bench, legs crossed. Both looked directly toward my camera with expressions that were difficult to read—and that ambiguity was exactly what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a lot happening around them. Reflections fill the cafe windows, advertisements hang behind the glass, tables and signs push into the edges of the frame, and another face appears unexpectedly in the reflection at the far right. Dublin is present everywhere, but the two men remain firmly at the center of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because this image is really about people, expressions and the visual layers surrounding them. Without color, the dark jackets, brickwork, window reflections and cafe interior begin to work together rather than compete for attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStreet photography often depends on noticing something before the moment changes. There was nothing spectacular happening here. No event. No performance. Just two men sitting outside a cafe in Dublin in 2019.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYet their body language and direct looks give the photograph a tension I couldn't have arranged myself. I still don't know exactly what they were thinking when they noticed me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's part of why I like the photograph. Tall windows have been patched with mismatched pieces of wood, paint has faded into layers of yellow and green, and laundry hangs openly across the upper floor. Then, at precisely the right moment, a man on a bicycle entered the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small figure changed the photograph for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis red shirt immediately separates him from the muted colors of the building, while the bicycle gives movement to an otherwise completely static facade. He is dwarfed by the architecture behind him, yet my eye goes directly to him. Without the cyclist, I would have a photograph about an aging Havana building. With him, it becomes a photograph about life continuing around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like the contrast between the grandeur the building must once have possessed and the way it is being lived in now. Ornamental columns and decorative details remain, but so do crumbling plaster, boarded windows, exposed masonry and improvised repairs. Laundry hanging above the street makes the building feel inhabited rather than abandoned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are the scenes that keep drawing me back to street photography. I can find the location and recognize the possibilities, but I can't manufacture the moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture gave me the setting. Havana gave me the color and texture. I was drawn to the layers immediately—the bartender facing away from me in his cowboy hat, the illuminated drinks cooler, bottles lined across the counter and an old Ford grille mounted against the back wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a lot happening in the frame, yet the bartender gives everything a centre. He stands almost in silhouette, surrounded by objects, handwritten details and accumulated pieces of the bar’s personality. Above him, the currency creates a dense, irregular canopy that seems to press down into the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph. It reduces all that visual clutter into light, shadow, texture and shape. The refrigerator glows on one side, a table lamp burns brightly on the other, and the darker centre of the room holds the bartender between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most about places like this is how much character can collect in a relatively small space. Nothing feels designed for a photograph. The bottles, old automotive pieces, hanging money and worn counter have simply accumulated into something distinctive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to keep. What remained was something I found more interesting: faces, gestures, clothing, cars, signs and bodies layered from the foreground deep into the street. The people become both individuals and part of a much larger pattern.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI especially like the way the scene builds upward through the frame. The foreground is packed with pedestrians standing, walking, talking and waiting. Farther back, the Broadway sign, traffic lights, taxis and storefronts begin to merge into the city itself. Even the statue near the centre seems almost swallowed by the movement around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is no single obvious subject here, and that is exactly what appealed to me. The lane still has a strong direction, leading between the close walls toward the building at the far end.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBelow, reflections break into uneven shapes across the paving stones. The nearest lamp is much brighter than the other details, while the smaller lights repeat farther down the passage. Black and white gives those changes in brightness a clear role in the composition. It also brings out the different textures of the walls, from the rougher stone on the left to the more regular patterned facade on the right.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the atmosphere comes from that meeting of movement and stillness. I was interested in those interactions rather than a view of the square centred on its architecture alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDifferent gestures appear across the scene. People reach toward the birds, look down at them or stand watching the activity nearby. The flock spreads widely through the foreground, with individual pigeons clear along the lower edge and denser groups around the figures. A few wings blur as the birds move, giving the photograph a different texture from the sharper bodies resting on the ground. I find these small simultaneous events rewarding to look at because attention can move from one group to another.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBehind them, the repeating arches and columns offer a much more measured rhythm. Their ordered lines give structure to the upper part of the photograph while the pigeons occupy the paving less predictably. Black and white brings people, birds and stonework together through gesture, pattern and tone.
