Moss hangs in long, loose strands, crossing the upright trunks and partly veiling the branches behind. Small clusters of orange leaves punctuate the greys and browns, so the colour moves through the image rather than collecting in one spot.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the view within the grove, allowing the foliage and moss to fill the upper frame. Near the bottom, the smoother water and low mist provide a quieter space. Most of the view belongs to the water and overlapping leaves, which form a pattern of pale shapes outlined by darker ripples. I like that balance: the animal is clear once noticed, but its surroundings remain important. The open water beside the head gives it some separation from the busier patches of leaves without removing it from the pond.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings out the differences between smooth water, leaf surfaces and the frog’s marked skin. Some leaves catch more light than others, and their edges vary from crisp to softer as they move farther from the central subject. My photograph stays low and close to the water, keeping the view intimate while leaving room around the frog. I find myself moving between its head and the repeated shapes across the pond. Above them, thinner branches reach sideways and moss falls in soft, uneven curtains. I like the contrast between the solid bark and those finer hanging forms. The darker forest behind gives the pale strands something to stand against, while the lighter trunks help separate one layer of the woods from another.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eConverting the photograph to black and white emphasizes that structure. Small changes in tone distinguish bark, moss and shadow, and the image begins to read almost as a drawing made from vertical and horizontal marks. There is still depth in the scene, especially through the narrow openings between the closer trees.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph is about the richness of a forest seen at close range. A single branch leads into another, and the moss connects shapes that might otherwise seem separate.
