Instead of everyone rushing through one of the busiest places in Manhattan, people simply sat down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is crowded, but it doesn't feel frantic. People lounge in folding chairs, talk, watch the street or simply sit by themselves. Behind them is unmistakable Times Square—yellow taxis, pedestrians, construction equipment, traffic lights, towering buildings and an almost absurd concentration of signs and advertising. Even the New York Police Department station is buried within the visual chaos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like photographs where there isn't necessarily one person who is the subject. Here, the people collectively become the subject. My eye can wander around the frame and discover dozens of small moments happening simultaneously.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph also has a personal connection for me. Later, during a workshop with legendary New York photographer Jay Maisel, I showed him this image. He stopped on it and commented on the uniqueness of the moment. That stayed with me because uniqueness is exactly what had made me raise my camera in the first place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTimes Square has been photographed millions of times. Finding a different photograph there is considerably harder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a brief period that summer, one of the world's most recognizable symbols of urban movement became somewhere people could simply pull up a chair and do absolutely nothing. It rises, falls and bends with every ridge, disappearing into the distance only to reappear farther along the horizon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in China in 2015. Several watchtowers punctuate the wall as it travels across the rugged terrain, creating a visual rhythm that carries the eye from the foreground deep into the photograph. Beyond them, successive mountain ridges become softer and increasingly blue with distance until they almost dissolve into the hazy sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subdued light was important. There was no dramatic sunset or brilliant colour competing with the landscape. Instead, the muted conditions allowed the shape of the mountains and the extraordinary path of the wall to become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStanding there, I was conscious of the enormous scale of what I was looking at. From a distance the Great Wall can appear almost delicate, a narrow line following the contours of the land, yet the closer sections reveal its physical weight and construction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast fascinated me. Human architecture occupies the landscape, but the mountains remain dominant. The water was nearly motionless, carrying soft reflections downward and doubling the few shapes that remained visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to how little the scene needed. There is no dramatic landmark and almost no colour demanding attention. Instead, the photograph depends on atmosphere—the dense fog, the muted dawn light, the isolated trees and the broad areas of open water and sky. Even the distant shoreline seems uncertain, appearing and disappearing as the mist thickens across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition became a study in restraint. Most of the landscape has been stripped away, leaving the house and trees suspended between water and fog. Their reflections are imperfect and elongated, just strong enough to connect the shoreline to the darker foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMornings like this are one reason I like being out with a camera before the landscape fully wakes. Fog changes familiar places quickly. Details vanish, distances become difficult to judge, and ordinary subjects can take on an entirely different presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me here was that sense of quiet uncertainty. The photograph does not reveal very much, yet it gives the eye room to wander through the mist. Each facade seems to belong to a slightly different architectural language—dark, heavily ornamented masonry on the left, a domed structure rising through the centre, and the lighter, more decorative building facing it from across the square.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep that entire relationship in the frame rather than concentrate on a single building. The broad paving in the foreground creates distance, allowing the architecture to unfold gradually as the eye moves deeper into the scene. Bicycles line one side, cars occupy the narrow passage ahead, and a few people cross the square, giving just enough scale to understand the size of the surrounding structures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast sky suited the scene. Its soft light reveals the stonework without harsh shadows, while the subdued colour keeps attention on the elaborate facades, windows, domes and sculptural details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often more interested in the spaces between important buildings than in photographing landmarks individually. A square like this shows how architecture functions together—how different structures, streets and public spaces accumulate into the character of an old European city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that layering is what makes the photograph interesting. A large black classic car had stopped in front of me, its polished body reflecting the bright tropical sky, while another vintage automobile edged into the frame from the left. Beyond them, the dome and long columned facade of El Capitolio rise above the traffic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat layering is what interested me. Havana's old American cars are photographed constantly, and El Capitolio is one of the city's best-known landmarks, but here the two subjects occupy the same everyday street scene rather than feeling separated into tourist icons. Traffic lights, pedestrians, palm trees and additional cars across the road keep the photograph grounded in the city around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also liked the muted colour. The black car dominates the lower half of the image, while pale stone, soft sky tones and restrained greens keep attention on shape and architecture. The Cuban license plate, chrome trim and distinctive rear fins add small details that reward a closer look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, Havana is often most interesting when several parts of its identity collide in one frame. From there, it keeps moving into the distance, sometimes clearly defined and sometimes almost absorbed by the rocky landscape. That repetition is what holds the photograph together. Wall, tower, ridge. Then another wall, another tower, another rise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the scene was already largely about texture and structure. The stonework, bare vegetation and exposed rock all sit within a narrow tonal range, while the pale sky removes almost every distraction above the mountains. Without strong colour competing for attention, the shape of the Great Wall becomes much easier to follow through the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like that the photograph does not make the terrain look gentle. The walls climb steep slopes, drop into valleys and continue across uneven ground, which gives a much stronger sense of the relationship between the architecture and the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStanding there, that was what interested me most. The Great Wall of China is immediately recognizable, but from this viewpoint it becomes something more than a landmark. The fence’s repeated diamond pattern connects the separate pieces without erasing their differences.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph holds an understated kind of remembrance. The materials are ordinary, but the care in the individual tiles gives them significance. I wanted to preserve that human scale in the image, alongside the rough wall and the shadows around it. In Sighișoara, in Romania’s Transylvania region, I photographed a panelled wooden door beside a shuttered window. The sepia treatment brings their worn surfaces together with the cracked plaster, keeping the scene warm in tone even where the details are rough.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe door is taller and more formal, with inset panels that still give it a clear structure. The shutters are simpler, their weathered boards showing dark streaks and an uneven lower edge. I like having both in the same frame. Each has its own character, but they share the same quiet, closed presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBetween them, the wall is marked by scratches, small patches of missing plaster and faint writing. Those details remain secondary to the door and window, yet they give the space around the wood a lived surface. Along the bottom, a short strip of paving anchors the view at street level.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the framing direct rather than seeking a dramatic angle. It lets the rectangles, textures and differences in height become the composition. The pale areas around the window frame also help separate it from the darker wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCaptured in 2011, this photograph is a close look at an ordinary part of Sighișoara’s streets. I am interested in how much visual character a small section of architecture can hold. Pale sand and water meet a grey sky, with darker seams in the stone providing the strongest contrast. That restrained palette lets me concentrate on the shapes rather than a dramatic burst of colour.
