The faded yellow wall is interrupted by remnants of turquoise paint and the deep red of the original window frame. Then the details begin to take over. Broken panes have been covered with mismatched pieces of wood. Sections of the wall have fallen away completely, exposing bricks and rough construction underneath. Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. I offer the original urban decay photograph as a fine art print on premium archival paper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe first time I walked through this abandoned factory in the Haliburton Highlands, I passed right by the boat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen I returned, I saw it differently.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAn old wooden rowboat had been propped almost vertically against a deteriorating brick wall beneath a concrete staircase. It was completely out of place—a boat built for the water stranded inside an industrial building that was itself slowly falling apart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction made the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red paint had peeled away in long irregular streaks, exposing bare wood and traces of green underneath. Behind it, decades of wear had transformed the brick wall into layers of faded paint, stains and exposed masonry. Even the staircase seems to have become part of the decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition square and relatively tight because I wanted the boat and wall to become almost graphic. The diagonal of the hull cuts hard across the frame, while the staircase moves in the opposite direction. Against all those subdued browns, creams and grays, the remaining red paint refuses to disappear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this scene in 2006, not far from my studio in Ontario. I never learned how the boat ended up inside the factory, and I think I prefer not knowing. The mystery is part of what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph was later selected for publication in Black \u0026amp; White Magazine’s Colour Special Edition, which felt particularly appropriate. Color is essential here. Without that battered red hull, it simply wouldn't be the same photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSometimes the most interesting subjects aren't where they belong. I am drawn to surfaces that have accumulated years of weather, repairs, marks and human contact—the kind of wall that becomes more interesting the longer I stand in front of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this one in southern India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA small wooden door sits almost unexpectedly within an enormous weathered wall. At first the scene seems overwhelmingly blue, but the closer I looked, the more colors began to emerge. Violet and faded red remain in the door. Pale markings and scratched graffiti wander across the wall. Stains run vertically through the surface, while patches of old paint reveal layer after layer underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is that tiny plant growing directly beneath the doorway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love details like that. Against this massive, scarred surface, a few green leaves introduce something alive and temporary. The door itself feels almost absorbed into the wall, as though both have been aging together for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene straight on because I wanted very little interpretation between me and what I had found. The wall becomes the composition. Texture, color, scratches, stains and imperfections become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing India so much. Extraordinary photographs don't always announce themselves. This one is about what time did to a very small part of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this old automobile at a vintage car exhibition in Los Angeles, but I was far more interested in getting close than making a conventional photograph of the vehicle. The door had become its own landscape. Cobwebs stretched across the window and chrome. Paint had cracked and separated. Scratches, dust and years of deterioration covered surfaces that were once polished and carefully maintained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe old door handle became the centre of the photograph. Its chrome was damaged and dull, yet enough of the original shape remained to suggest the styling and craftsmanship of another era.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the detail in black and white because colour seemed unnecessary. What interested me were the textures—the fractured paint, strands of webbing, worn metal, curved trim and deep shadows. Up close, the automobile almost disappears and the photograph becomes something more abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to things that show their age rather than hide it. The structure is still recognizable, yet vines have pushed across the roofline, tall grasses crowd the foreground, and sections of the lower wall have opened enough to expose the dark framework beneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Ontario and kept the composition vertical so the barn rises out of the tangled vegetation rather than sitting neatly apart from it. That relationship matters to me. The weathered boards, broken edges, leaning lines, and dense growth all compete within the frame, while the open space on the right gives the eye somewhere to move before returning to the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph because the subject is really about texture and structure. Removing color puts more emphasis on the grain of the wood, the pale grasses, the mass of leaves climbing over the barn, and the deep shadow inside the damaged lower section. Even the heavy cloud cover becomes part of the mood without overwhelming the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the tension between something once built for practical use and the landscape gradually reclaiming it. It is a quiet rural scene, but there is nothing tidy about it. Here, the wall is not one colour or one texture. It shifts from deep brown brick to faded green, chalky white, and soft lavender-grey, with vertical streaks that seem to record years of rain and exposure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition works because of the tension between structure and collapse. The door and the vertical seams in the wall give the photograph order, but the broken bricks, splintered wood, and scattered rubble along the bottom edge interrupt that order immediately. Nothing is polished. Nothing has been cleaned up for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is exactly what interested me. Even the vertical column near the centre seems to separate two different histories of the same interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned industrial spaces because they are full of compositions that were never designed to be photographs. Nothing here was arranged for appearance. The staircase existed simply to move people from one level to another, yet once the factory fell silent, its shape became the dominant visual element. The strong diagonal gives the scene movement, while the worn brick and stained surfaces slow the eye down and reward a closer look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2008. What interests me now is the same thing that interested me then: the evidence of time. The structure remains recognizable and purposeful, but every surface carries the marks of age, neglect and weathering. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. In monochrome, the eye moves more easily between the rough metal, the arrows, the round porthole-like windows, the stickers, the brickwork and the bicycle wheels. Repetition begins to take over. Circles answer circles, straight lines run against diagonals, and the bicycle seems almost designed to belong there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is that the photograph does not depend on a grand building or a famous landmark. It is simply a street detail that became visually complicated the longer I looked at it. Rather than concentrating only on the immense scale of the Wall itself, I was drawn toward this smaller architectural detail. The broad red frame, repeated rectangular windows and tightly divided panes create an almost rigid geometry, yet every section of wood carries evidence of weathering and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what holds the photograph together for me. The structure is orderly. The surface is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAcross the doors, red paint has worn into rusty orange, brown and pale exposed wood. Some window panels remain dark while others appear almost white, breaking the repetition just enough to keep the pattern from becoming too perfect. At the centre, the small lock and metal hardware become an understated focal point amid all those larger rectangles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always found doors photographically intriguing because they are both architectural objects and boundaries. They suggest another space without revealing very much about it. Not the whole train, not the landscape around it, but this tight section of green and yellow metal with its repeating vents, hinges, handles and years of wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this train in Coonoor, India, in 2009 while travelling through the Nilgiri Hills. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the defining sights of the region, but I was more interested here in moving closer and isolating a small piece of the carriage. Once separated from the rest of the train, the surface becomes almost abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe saturated green dominates the frame, interrupted by a single horizontal band of yellow running through the centre. Rows of louvred panels repeat across the metalwork, creating a strong pattern, while chipped paint, scratches and uneven surfaces prevent the geometry from becoming too perfect. Those small imperfections are important to me. They give the photograph its character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often find that the most memorable part of a place is not necessarily the grand view. Sometimes it is a colour, a texture or an ordinary detail that becomes far more interesting when removed from its surroundings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what happened here. Signs advertising fishing rod rentals and departure times add another layer, revealing that these simple structures remain practical places rather than merely picturesque buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also liked the irregularity of the row. The sheds overlap and step backward from one another, each slightly different in size and proportion. Utility poles and overhead wires interrupt the clean geometry, while the wet pavement and subdued sky give the scene the quiet atmosphere of a damp Maritime day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is nothing grand about these buildings, and that is precisely why I stopped. The first arch is massive and heavy, filling most of the frame, yet every opening beyond it becomes progressively smaller. The eye has nowhere else to go. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colour was equally important. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. Light entering the corridor catches certain surfaces while others fall into shadow, giving each successive arch its own subtle separation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often photograph architecture for exactly this reason. A structure can become something entirely different when I stop looking at the whole building and concentrate on one repeating element. A small wooden door sat buried inside weathered stone, but what interested me was how completely the trees had begun to take over. Thick roots dropped from above, twisted across the wall and gathered around the doorway until architecture and vegetation seemed inseparable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed it in black and white because colour was not what held the scene together. It was texture, shadow and shape. The rough masonry, dark bark, fallen leaves and battered door all occupied nearly the same tonal world, which made the roots feel even more dominant. They do not simply frame the entrance; they seem to press against it from every direction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged. I did not move branches, clear leaves or try to make the doorway more visible. Its partial concealment was the reason I stopped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat stays with me is the tension between something built to endure and something growing without any concern for the structure around it. A fortress suggests permanence, strength and control. The roots suggest the opposite—slow, persistent change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHavana is full of layers, but this was one of the quieter ones. No crowd, no traffic, no obvious landmark announcing itself. Just an old door, heavy stone and trees steadily changing the wall around them. Nothing has been cleaned up for the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe restrained colour gives the image another layer. The red maple leaf remains recognizable without overpowering the weathered wood around it. Against the nearly monochrome building and overcast sky, it becomes both a visual focal point and an unmistakably Canadian element.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to buildings that reveal their history through their surfaces. Along the coast of Prince Edward Island, working sheds like this are part of the landscape rather than architectural showpieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to preserve here: a simple fishing building, worn by the Atlantic environment, photographed without trying to make it prettier than it was. Vertical support beams divide the frame, horizontal boards create repetition, and the central doorway gives the photograph an anchor. Behind the glass, patterned curtains remain visible, introducing an unexpectedly delicate detail among all the heavy timber and weathered surfaces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white concentrates everything on texture. Splintered boards, cracked plaster, worn paint and dark gaps between the timbers become more important than colour. The building feels tactile, almost as though every surface has recorded another season of exposure and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me about rural architecture is rarely perfection. I am much more drawn to buildings that reveal how they were made, altered and repaired over time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis farmhouse had that quality everywhere. The boards, doors and windows do not feel decorative; they feel practical and accumulated. The peeling paint is immediately visible, but the interior takes longer to read. Reflections across the glass mingle with the curtains and flowers, letting the street and the room overlap without revealing everything inside. The cat gives that layered scene a living presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged for the camera. I stopped to observe what was already there, keeping the window and the surrounding wall together in the composition. Colour is essential to the result: the warm yellow exterior, cool reflections above and flowers below make each part distinct. His position near the left edge lets the architecture occupy the picture without turning it into an empty study of buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbove the doors, lace curtains and small plants soften the windows. At street level, signs, pipes and slender posts keep the scene grounded in ordinary use. I like how those details remain visible alongside the weathering. There is care here as well as wear, and the photograph leaves room for both.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the interest lies in that meeting of a person and a place for a brief moment. The old-town setting has texture and colour, while the walking figure brings movement to its otherwise steady lines. They introduce a human trace into a scene shaped by the forest, adding another kind of weathering to the wood.
