From a distance, the individual buildings almost disappear into one enormous pattern of colour, repetition and density.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat visual compression is what fascinated me. There is barely any empty space. One structure sits above another, then another, climbing relentlessly across the hillside. Most share the same deep red and brown tones, but small flashes of green, turquoise, yellow and brighter crimson appear in windows, doors and fabric, breaking up the repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scale is difficult to understand until I start looking closely. Every small rectangle is a home. Paths wind between them, buildings lean into the contours of the land, and the settlement seems to have grown organically rather than according to any simple grid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLarung Gar sits at roughly 12,500 feet, and its isolation was part of what made being there so memorable for me. Yet photographically, I kept returning to the visual structure of the place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the frame to feel almost overwhelming—to let the homes fill it completely, without sky or distant landscape providing relief. For me, that density is the photograph. They fold, stretch and overlap, making some areas translucent and others more dense. Dark printing remains visible through the brighter fabric, while small creases catch light along their edges. I like how those variations prevent the strong colour from becoming uniform.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDuring that journey, the prayer flags repeatedly caught my attention. In this image, I moved away from the broad landscape view and concentrated on the material itself. The close framing lets the eye follow the red lines across the picture, then pause at a patch of green or a section of golden cloth carrying its printed marks.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph brings together an identifiable cultural subject and an almost abstract study of colour. The flags remain recognisable, but their overlapping shapes give the image a rhythm beyond any one piece of fabric. During my travels through Tibet in 2015, I photographed this mountain landscape with its nearer slopes filling most of the frame and a line of snow-covered peaks along the horizon. In black and white, the view becomes an arrangement of rounded forms, dark gullies, and pale distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI find the nearer hills particularly compelling. They are rugged without having the sharp silhouettes of the peaks beyond them. Their surfaces carry long channels and small dark patches, with light tracing the shoulders of the ridges. Toward the middle of the photograph, those separate contours converge around a deep valley that draws the eye inward.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe distant snow adds a different texture. Its brighter band lifts the horizon above the darker land, while the pale sky gives the whole range a little breathing room. There is no single summit dominating the composition. Instead, the landscape unfolds across the image through a succession of slopes and changes in tone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat sense of progression is what I wanted to hold in the photograph. The close detail invites a careful look, but the view also retains the scale of the mountains beyond it. As a print, it brings a layered mountain study to a living room, study, or quiet corner. The hillside above provides a darker backdrop, and the pale trim draws separate buildings together visually. A little foliage near the lower edge softens the otherwise angular composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen I photographed these homes in 2015, I was interested in how an individual building changes when seen as part of a group. Here, no single facade commands the whole view. Each contributes a different shape, surface, or opening, and the eye can move from one to another at its own pace. Large earrings hang beside her cheeks, and the ribbed collar introduces a quieter pattern beneath her chin. I kept the surrounding landscape soft so those details could remain close to the face without competing with it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI remember the family being friendly, while her expression in this photograph is unsmiling and direct. The lines across her forehead and around her eyes are sharply visible, but I cannot turn those details into a biography. Our meeting was brief. What I can retain is the particular way she faced the camera, with her mouth closed and her gaze steady.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe grey space around her gives the portrait its balance. Nothing in that background needs to be identified for the photograph to work; it lets the eye return to the braids, the earrings, and above all her expression. Their irregular arrangement caught my attention: slabs leaned into one another, carved faces overlapped, and inscriptions disappeared behind neighbouring stones. I made this black and white photograph close enough for that accumulation of surfaces to fill the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSome pieces stand almost upright, while others tilt through the gaps. A deeply carved inscription emerges on the left, and a broader marked surface appears farther to the right. I cannot follow every line because parts of the tablets are concealed, but that partial view is one of the things I like about the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe light reveals different kinds of detail. Pale markings sit against darker stone, rough breaks interrupt smoother faces, and narrow shadows show where one slab separates from the next. Black and white gives those small changes enough clarity to hold the composition together without simplifying its density.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI wanted to retain the arrangement as I encountered it rather than single out one tablet as a neatly isolated object. At first the photograph is a field of angular stone and shadow; with more time, individual carvings become easier to distinguish. That gradual discovery reflects what drew me to the subject at the temple.
