Toronto Wall Art

Toronto Wall Art is my way of capturing the pulse of Canada’s largest city, a place where modern glass towers rise over historic streets and neighbourhoods hum with character. When I photograph Toronto, I’m chasing its contrasts—the calm of Lake Ontario beside the bustle of Yonge Street, the quiet geometry of architecture against the rhythm of street life, the skyline glowing at sunset as the city shifts into night. This fine art series brings together those perspectives, from iconic landmarks to overlooked corners that hold their own stories. If you’re looking for wall art that reflects both the energy and the nuance of an urban landscape, these images let Toronto’s personality come alive on your walls.

Route 501 Long Branch Moving Through Downtown Toronto

Toronto rarely feels still, and I wanted that movement to become part of the photograph rather than something I tried to eliminate.

The TTC streetcar dominates the frame, its familiar red and white body remaining recognizable while the surrounding city seems to stretch and dissolve around it. Route 501 Long Branch is visible across the destination sign, along with streetcar number 4214, giving the photograph a very specific Toronto identity. Behind it, a taxi, pedestrians, towers and storefronts remain present, but the motion blur turns them into fragments of the city rather than competing subjects.

What interests me here is the contrast between detail and movement. The streetcar doors, windows, mirrors and front lights remain strong enough to hold the eye, while the streetscape rushes outward toward the edges of the frame. Even the architecture begins to lose its solidity. Toronto becomes less about individual buildings and more about speed, congestion and constant movement.

The red of the streetcar carries through the softer colours around it, making the vehicle feel almost suspended inside the blur.

I have always liked photographs that show familiar places differently. A Toronto streetcar is an everyday sight, something thousands of people pass without thinking about it. From that position, the buildings stop behaving like individual skyscrapers. They become lines, angles and repeating grids pushing inward from every edge of the frame.

The open blue sky was essential. It creates an enormous central space while the towers surround it without ever completely closing it off. Each building has a different architectural rhythm—rows of square windows, reflective glass, pale stone, darker facades—and the extreme viewpoint exaggerates those differences.

I photographed the scene in 2014, but what interested me was less the identity of any particular tower than the geometry created by having so many of them concentrated in one part of Toronto. Several belong to Canada's major banks, making this cluster inseparable from the character of the city's financial core.

Looking upward also changes the sense of scale. Inside Toronto’s Hearn Generating Station, beams, platforms and tall rows of structural panels form a dense industrial interior. Even so, the building’s lines and textures were too compelling to pass by. The structure has a strong sense of depth, despite the number of overlapping details.

What interests me is the contrast between order and wear. The steel follows a clear engineering logic, but its surfaces carry darker marks and warmer, weathered tones. Light catches the metal around the center, while darker areas behind it give the wheel depth.

The dashboard carries smaller details across the background: gauges, controls, and a radio set within a broad smooth panel. That small contrast is what keeps me looking at this portrait. I photographed the accordion player at the Toronto Busker Festival in 2011, drawn to a face that was both clearly designed and still connected to a person.

The white mask dominates the close view. Dark shapes above the eyes, small hearts on the cheeks and the painted lips create a strong arrangement against the pale surface. A dark beret frames the top of the head, and the slight tilt makes the portrait feel less formal. Black and white carries those details particularly well because the mask already depends on clear contrasts.

The accordion adds another pattern below the face. Its piano keys repeat black and white in a more regular way, while straps and a scarf bring diagonal lines through the lower part of the photograph. Straight poles become gently broken lines, and the pale boat hulls leave softer marks on the surface. The water carries the gold of the sky without becoming a perfect mirror. My black and white photograph looks upward, with the tower on the left and the building’s curved window grid filling the right. The view makes their contrasting shapes as interesting as the landmark itself.

The tower has a clear vertical line, interrupted by the broad circular form of its observation level. Beside it, the glass building bends through the frame, its repeated windows changing size and angle as they rise. I made the image from Liberty Village in 2015, looking towards the downtown core and keeping the frame filled with architecture. There is no open sky to separate the structures; windows, roofs and walls overlap from top to bottom.

The spire gives the eye a clear point of entry. Its narrow, rising shape contrasts with the much wider horizontal bands of the tower to its left. Each layer brings its own proportions, making the city appear compact without reducing it to one repeated pattern.

I find this close view of Toronto especially rewarding in monochrome. Glass grids, brickwork, pale walls and dark recesses remain distinct through tone and texture. This Toronto night photograph, made in 2015, looks down across glass facades, lower rooftops and small pools of warm light. I kept the close building on the right as a strong edge, letting the road carry the eye deeper into the neighbourhood.

Colour gives this view much of its character. Cool blue-green reflections appear in the glass, while windows and street lamps add yellow and orange light below. The scene is dense with detail, yet the open roadway creates a clear route through the frame.

The curved balconies are especially important to the composition. Their horizontal bands repeat up the right side, contrasting with the squarer window grid in the building across the street. Nearer the bottom, bright trails along the road add another set of lines, softer than the architecture but following the same bend into the distance.

I enjoy the way night changes the balance of a city view. Some surfaces become dark outlines while individual windows and entrances take on greater importance. At first, it looked like a crowded tangle of paper and paint, but the repeated advertisements gave me a way into the scene. Several bright, relatively intact sheets sit above older torn layers, while red and black graffiti crosses the rougher surface below. I stopped to photograph the wall as a whole section, keeping both the repetition and the disorder within the frame.

Texture was what held my attention. Ragged paper edges, small printed fragments and exposed patches of the wall create a surface that changes almost everywhere I look. I like the difference between those broken pieces and the clean rectangular sheets near the upper centre. The repeated red lips on one group of advertisements make a particularly clear pattern within the larger accumulation. Other small blocks of blue, green and darker print remain scattered among the paler layers.

The broad red strokes travel across several of those surfaces, linking details that might otherwise feel separate. Black curves and lettering add another set of lines beneath the advertising. I wanted the photograph to preserve this overlap between street writing, commercial print and weathered paper. Its colour comes from those existing materials, with reds and darker marks standing out against worn cream tones. Looking at the image, I can follow the larger shapes first and then keep discovering smaller fragments within them. I made this view in 2014, before the renovation, when the sign and the brickwork around it still showed the wear recorded here. Instead of taking in the whole building, I concentrated on the projecting metal box and its bright lettering. The close view let a familiar piece of the venue become the subject in its own right.

The words “BOX OFFICE” sit inside a rounded neon border, their narrow curves standing out against the dark sign face. Behind them, rows of bricks run across the frame, interrupted by vertical marks and a band of upright brickwork over the doorway. A hanging chain at the right and the support cable above help show how the sign occupies the wall. I liked the contrast between the lettering’s loose curves and the repeated rectangles of the masonry, with the angle revealing both the sign face and its depth.

Black and white gives the illuminated tubes a clear brightness while holding detail in the casing and surrounding bricks. Revisiting this early photograph let me bring the expression, detail, and atmosphere into clearer balance while preserving the immediacy of the encounter.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2005

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/bearded-man-walking-through-downtown-toronto-1.jpg?v=1792092689
toronto-bay-street-g20-pedestrian-and-plywood
Toronto Bay Street During G20 | Black and White Photography

A Passing Figure Beneath Columns and Boarded Windows

A man steps through a narrow band of light beneath the heavy columns of Bay Street. Above him, plywood covers a large window, interrupting the formal stone facade. I photographed this downtown Toronto scene on the morning of the last day of the G20 in 2010, while the area was still accessible.

The boarded windows give the image its particular context. Businesses had covered their glass with plywood, leaving an unfamiliar surface within the architecture. Against that temporary barrier, the passing figure makes the scale of the building feel even more imposing.

What caught my eye was the way the light found his face, arms, and forward stride. Most of the facade remains dark. The bright pavement forms a horizontal stage beneath the columns, and the man's movement crosses it in a single, clearly defined gesture.

The atmosphere of that morning rests in these visible details. The plywood gives the building a temporary, improvised character, while the columns retain their formality. I was drawn to the way one passing figure connected those surfaces to everyday street life, bringing a moment of movement into an unusually guarded setting.

The black and white treatment strengthens those relationships: light against shadow, movement against the weight of stone, and ordinary street life against an altered city.
