The faded yellow wall is interrupted by remnants of turquoise paint and the deep red of the original window frame. Then the details begin to take over. Broken panes have been covered with mismatched pieces of wood. Sections of the wall have fallen away completely, exposing bricks and rough construction underneath. Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. Inside, lace curtains soften those straight lines. A vase of flowers brings a cluster of brighter colours into the lower part of the window, while the cat is tucked close to the bottom, easy to miss on a first look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI liked that the photograph asks for a little attention. The peeling paint is immediately visible, but the interior takes longer to read. Reflections across the glass mingle with the curtains and flowers, letting the street and the room overlap without revealing everything inside. The cat gives that layered scene a living presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged for the camera. I stopped to observe what was already there, keeping the window and the surrounding wall together in the composition. Colour is essential to the result: the warm yellow exterior, cool reflections above and flowers below make each part distinct. The window is bright, the far corner dark, and the chair sits between them with a narrow outline. Exposed brick adds a regular pattern on one side, while the damaged ceiling and walls introduce rougher shapes. Those surfaces keep the eye moving through a room that otherwise feels still.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph leaves the room’s earlier life open to reflection. I wanted to record what was visible rather than supply a story for the person who might once have used it. The missing cab door opens a view through to the steering wheel and seat, while the engine adds a dense cluster of smaller details below the hood.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe colours remain close to the materials. Rusty orange and traces of faded green appear on the truck, with a warmer tone at the wheel. The barn is largely grey, so its red window trim becomes a clear accent. Along the ground, a thin remnant of snow separates the wall from the brown earth.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI am interested in how these different kinds of wear sit together. The shingles retain their repeated pattern even as their surfaces weather; the truck has lost parts but still has a recognisable outline. The photograph allows both to remain visible without turning the scene into a list of damaged details. On the left, diagonal steel braces cut across a dark grid of windows. A much lighter facade dominates the centre with its relentless pattern of rectangular openings, while darker buildings close in from the sides. Near the bottom, smaller structures interrupt the repetition and a thin plume of steam rises from a rooftop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small detail matters to me. Without it, the photograph could almost become a study in pure geometry. The steam introduces something temporary into an otherwise rigid scene, a brief irregular shape surrounded by thousands of straight lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white strengthens that contrast. Colour would have separated the buildings in a different way, but monochrome allows the tones, patterns and architectural rhythms to become the subject. Some windows reflect light, others disappear into shadow, and the entire frame shifts between repetition and interruption.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often find Chicago most interesting when I stop trying to photograph complete buildings. By isolating fragments and allowing several structures to overlap, the city becomes something more abstract.
