I photographed this Antarctic ruin in colour, keeping the weathered grey timber, scattered boards, dark ground, and small patches of snow together in a view of the building and its exposed setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eStanding there in 2011, I was struck by the stillness. With so little to interrupt the scene, my attention went straight to the structure: the long beam projecting into open space, the upright posts, and the broken window frame. The cabin seemed reduced to a few lines that could still describe a room even where the walls and roof were gone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe fallen boards are just as important to the photograph as the part left standing. They cross the foreground at different angles, leading toward the opening and then out to the distant shore. Beyond the ruin, pale mountains and water soften into the light sky. I like the contrast between those broad, quiet distances and the close detail of splintered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI wanted to give this remnant my full attention without adding an imagined account of its occupants. What is visible is already compelling: a fragile building, its materials spread across the ground, and a landscape much larger than it.
