The metal surface is covered with small directional arrows, circular openings and layered marks, giving the whole façade a strange mixture of precision, wear and improvisation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe bicycle changed the photograph. Without it, the frame would have been almost entirely about architecture and surface. Leaning against the sticker-covered post, it introduces a human scale and a sense of ordinary street life without anyone actually appearing in the scene. That contrast interested me: an elaborate Art Deco door beside something as familiar and practical as a bicycle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour would have competed with the extraordinary amount of detail. In monochrome, the eye moves more easily between the rough metal, the arrows, the round porthole-like windows, the stickers, the brickwork and the bicycle wheels. Repetition begins to take over. Circles answer circles, straight lines run against diagonals, and the bicycle seems almost designed to belong there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is that the photograph does not depend on a grand building or a famous landmark. It is simply a street detail that became visually complicated the longer I looked at it.
