Checkerboard paving and dark pews lead toward columns, painted scenes and seasonal trees within the richly detailed room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDubrovnik was quiet during my January visit in 2020, and stepping into St Ignatius Church brought a different kind of stillness. The ornate altar stood at the end of the aisle, framed by columns and large painted scenes. I composed this photograph from a low position, using the floor tiles and pews to lead toward the centre. The symmetry gave the richly detailed interior a clear structure.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe checkerboard stone floor occupies the foreground, its alternating tones making a strong path between the dark benches. Beyond it, steps rise toward the altar, where smaller carved details gather around the central arrangement. I like how those successive levels carry the eye upward, moving from the simple floor pattern into the more elaborate forms above.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSeasonal trees stand on either side, their small ornaments introducing a different texture beneath the large paintings. Tall columns provide firm vertical lines, while curved mouldings and decorative bands follow the wall around the upper frame. The IHS emblem near the top adds another distinct point within that dense arrangement.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings out the differences between polished stone, carved ornament, wooden pews and painted surfaces. The balanced tones preserve detail in the brighter areas while keeping the darker benches visible.
