A small cluster of red roofs sits near the base of a mountain, surrounded by muted fields and dark slopes. I kept the buildings small within the frame because their scale is what makes the landscape compelling: a settled place beneath a mountain partly concealed by low cloud.

I photographed the scene while traveling through rural Iceland, waiting for the fog to reveal enough of the ridge without clearing away its atmosphere. Long pale bands move across the upper slopes, exposing one fold of land while hiding the next. The mountain remains substantial even where its outline disappears.

Across the foreground, a winding stream cuts a narrow reflective path through the meadow. It creates a gentle movement toward the farm, then the rising ground carries the eye up into the cloud. I like the contrast between that low, horizontal openness and the broad diagonal of the mountain above. The photograph holds both without giving either the whole view.

The red roofs offer just a little color within the subdued greens, browns, and greys. They are enough to locate the farm and give the eye somewhere to settle, yet small enough to preserve the sense of space. For someone drawn to Iceland’s quieter countryside, this scene offers a landscape shaped by weather and scale. I return to those roofs after looking through the fog, reminded how a modest group of buildings can make an enormous mountain feel even larger.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2022

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Red-Roofs-Beneath-Icelandic-Mountain-Fog-Quiet-Landscape-Photography-1.jpg?v=1792147980
