cougar-in-black-and-white
Cougar Walking Towards the Camera | Black and White Photograph

A Lowered Cougar Head and Forward Paw Above Rough Ground

The cougar’s lowered head and direct gaze lead this black and white photograph. One front paw reaches towards the bottom of the frame while the other supports its body farther back. I made the image in 2012 from a low position, keeping the face, shoulders and paws together so the animal’s movement could remain part of the portrait.

The eyes are the immediate focal point. Pale fur around them meets darker markings, and the broad nose sits above a lighter muzzle with long whiskers extending to either side. The ears remain visible above the head, giving the face a clear outline against the body behind it. Those details are closely framed, but there is still enough ground around the paws to show the direction of the step.

I find the contrast between the smooth coat and the rough surface beneath it especially effective. Leaves, grass and small stones make a busy lower texture, while the animal’s fur has much subtler changes in tone. Monochrome keeps those differences distinct without letting background colour compete with the face.

As I watched through the camera, the approaching shape narrowed my attention to the animal’s posture and gaze. The photograph retains that concentrated view. For someone drawn to big-cat portraits, it offers a strong cougar image with both facial detail and a sense of forward movement. My eye meets the face first, then follows the shoulders and extended paw into the foreground, tracing the same direction that gives the composition its energy.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Cougar-Walking-Towards-the-Camera-Black-and-White-Photograph-1.jpg?v=1791612396
