Her raised arms, direct stare and irreverent gesture came together quickly. I made the black and white photograph as the moment unfolded, without arranging her position or asking for the expression.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe strong sunlight is as much a part of the picture as the gesture. It throws her shadow sharply across the stone wall, repeating the shape of her body at a different scale. Her bare feet and the small bundle on the pavement bring the scene back to its immediate street setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept a large area of pale wall around her. Its decorative band and textured surface give the frame structure, while the darker base separates the lower part of her body. The shadow becomes a second shape beside the figure, making the raised arms more pronounced.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI remember the scene as more complicated than a simple playful moment. There was restless energy among the children, and the photograph retains some of that tension alongside its humour. Black and white concentrates the light, expression and body language within the same tonal arrangement.
