The close photograph brings the weathered mural and its changing surface into colorful urban wall art.

A yellow brick wall in New York City becomes the entire subject here. Across it, a blue line drawing of a figure in a broad hat is slowly disappearing beneath layers of peeling red and yellow paint.

What interests me most is the collision between the drawing and the surface carrying it. The figure was once much clearer, but time has interrupted it. Pieces of the face and body vanish where the paint has lifted away, while other sections remain surprisingly intact. The wall is no longer simply a background. It has become part of the image itself.

The colours are what first give the photograph its energy. Bright blue sits against yellow brick, while the exposed red underneath breaks through in hundreds of irregular fragments. From a distance, the figure holds together. Up close, the photograph becomes almost entirely about texture, cracks, edges and small pieces of colour.

I have always been interested in photographs that reveal something easily overlooked in a city. This is not a grand New York landmark or a familiar skyline. It is a temporary piece of street art on a deteriorating wall, something that could continue changing until very little of the original drawing remains.

That impermanence is a large part of what makes the scene interesting to me. The artwork and the wall are aging together, creating something neither one could have produced on its own.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/New-York-Street-Art-Photography-Peeling-Paint-Wall-1.jpg?v=1792039866
