The weathered wooden boards are dark and worn, almost disappearing into the shadow of the doorway, while the surrounding brickwork carries an entirely different kind of presence: pale paint, stains, exposed masonry, cracks, and years of uneven decay.

I found this scene in Haliburton, Ontario, in 2008. It was one of those overlooked industrial corners that most people would pass without a second glance. I tend to stop at places like this because the surface tells the story. Here, the wall is not one colour or one texture. It shifts from deep brown brick to faded green, chalky white, and soft lavender-grey, with vertical streaks that seem to record years of rain and exposure.

The composition works because of the tension between structure and collapse. The door and the vertical seams in the wall give the photograph order, but the broken bricks, splintered wood, and scattered rubble along the bottom edge interrupt that order immediately. Nothing is polished. Nothing has been cleaned up for the camera.

That is exactly what interested me. The photograph is really about time made visible: wood wearing down, paint disappearing, brick breaking apart, and an ordinary entrance slowly becoming something far more visually complex than it was ever meant to be.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Weathered-Wooden-Door-and-Brick-Wall-Haliburton-Ontario-1.jpg?v=1792536979
