Large slabs in the foreground become smaller as they approach the distance, while doorways repeat along the right-hand wall. I like how the nearest dark entrance balances the woman’s figure, keeping the eye moving between human detail and architecture. The rough masonry has its own pattern of joints and changes in tone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOverhead, garlands and round decorations stretch between the buildings. Hanging lamps and shutters add further shapes above the street, giving the upper part of the view a different kind of rhythm. Their presence helps make the scene feel specific to this particular moment in the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings the paving, walls and figure into a restrained arrangement of light and shade. For me, this photograph holds an ordinary passage through Dubrovnik, where a person’s movement gives scale to the surroundings.
