I framed their red and orange surfaces above an open stretch of canyon floor, with only a small area of blue sky visible at the top. The wide view gives the rock room to show its different forms, from the large recessed area on the left to the more angular walls farther along.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLight reveals sweeping curves, narrow fractures, and darker vertical marks across the cliff. Some surfaces are smooth enough to carry broad areas of colour; others break into ledges and rougher edges. I like the way those changes remain visible within a single wall. They give the photograph detail without weakening the larger shape of the canyon.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNear the base, low vegetation and a slender line of pale branches introduce a smaller scale. The open ground in front is much simpler, allowing the eye to move toward the cliff without another large feature intervening. At the right edge, a closer rock face adds a darker boundary to the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI made this image during my travels in the American Southwest in 2008. What I wanted to preserve was the relationship between the canyon’s enclosing walls and the space beneath them. The warm rock, dark recesses, and clear sky create a strong colour arrangement, while the fine surface details invite a slower look.
