A diamond-shaped keyhole fitting sits lower and slightly to the left. Rows of studs follow the planks, repeating their upward lines without becoming perfectly regular. The bricks at the edge are heavier and more uneven, with pale marks on some of their faces. I did not need a precise history of the door to appreciate those visible marks. What interested me was how a practical entrance could become a close study of shape and texture.
