In this black and white photograph, I made the familiar concourse clock the centre of the composition, allowing its rounded shape and glowing dials to stand against the tall windows and heavy architectural lines behind it.

I photographed the scene in 2011. My interest was in the balance between a relatively small, intricate object and the grand room surrounding it. The visible faces turn in different directions, while highlights trace the curved housing and the ornamented support underneath. Those edges give the clock a clear presence without needing to brighten the whole terminal.

Below it, the information booth creates a broad, dark base. The train information signs bring a little lettering into the scene, connecting the clock to the everyday business of the station. Higher in the frame, a chandelier becomes a softer cluster of light, and the window divisions introduce a different kind of repetition. I like how these elements let the eye travel upward through the photograph.

The monochrome treatment holds those contrasts together: pale dials, bright lamps, deep shadows, and the quieter grey of the walls. I see this as a study of one recognisable New York detail within its larger setting. It suits a space where architectural photography can be both a point of interest and a reminder of a city with a distinctive visual character.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2011

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Grand-Central-Clock-Black-And-White-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791806580
