Choose it for abstract architectural wall art with repeating roof lines and patterned wall panels.

Curving steel ribs sweep across the roof of Tokyo International Forum, casting long bands of shadow down the walls below. I photographed the atrium detail in black and white, concentrating on the relationship between the structure and the pattern made by sunlight. The repeating curves occupy the upper frame, while the wall panels turn those curves into a second arrangement of light and dark.

I made the image while exploring central Tokyo and walking through the building’s interior. Moving along the balconies and looking upward gave me different ways to see the same framework. For this composition, I waited until the shadows aligned in a way that felt balanced. I kept the view close enough for the ribs, rods, and glass grid to become the main subject, with the larger atrium outside the frame. The strong curves carry the eye toward the right, while the descending shadows pull it back down through the image.

Monochrome emphasizes those two directions without losing the finer details within them. Bright edges separate the ribs from the roof grid, and smaller structural lines remain visible between the broad arcs. I like how the photograph can be read as a bold geometric pattern from a distance, then as a detailed piece of architecture when examined more closely. For someone drawn to modern buildings or abstract architectural photography, this image offers a study of Tokyo International Forum through its light and structure. What interested me was the way the building’s physical forms could produce another composition on the surfaces beneath them.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2025

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Tokyo-International-Forum-Steel-Ribs-and-Shadows-Black-and-White-Photography-1.jpg?v=1792326113
https://dinkosmayer.com/products/japan-tokyo-tokyo-international-forum-ribbed-steel-ceiling-shadow-pattern-black-and-white
