I photographed this exterior at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, Cuba, in 2017. The colour image brings together a vivid blue wall, a narrow yellow section and dense layers of signatures and scribblings.

The door gives the composition a firm rectangular shape. Around it, the writing moves in many directions, overlapping across the painted surface. Some marks are dark and bold; others are smaller or paler, becoming part of the wall’s overall texture. I like how that busy detail remains held within a simple arrangement of strong colours.

The close framing leaves the bar’s broader surroundings outside the picture. Plaques and small practical details remain visible beside the door, keeping the view connected to a particular place rather than a purely abstract surface. The weathered paint and many inscriptions add variation within the blue, so the wall continues to reveal smaller details beyond its first bright impression.

For me, the photograph records the facade as I encountered it that year. Its appeal lies in the meeting of an ordinary doorway and the marks left around it by many visitors. As wall art, it can suit someone drawn to Havana, graffiti photography or bold architectural colour. The red and blue provide a lively focal point, while the accumulated writing offers a more intricate layer for anyone who enjoys looking closely at urban surfaces.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/La-Bodeguita-del-Medio-Havana-Graffiti-Colour-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791928355
