Its pale lower section gives way to darker brick higher up, with railings and the lantern room forming a more intricate shape at the top. I’m drawn to how clearly the tower stands against the open sky, while the vegetation gives its base a softer edge.

The brickwork remains visible across both sections of the tower. Small windows interrupt the surface at different heights, and the change in tone makes its long, tapered shape easy to follow. I like moving from those broad surfaces toward the finer details above: the circular galleries, slender railings and the structure around the lantern. They bring a different scale to the upper part of the photograph.

Below, palms lean and spread their fronds among lower shrubs. Sand appears at the front of the view, with the planting and tower set just beyond it. The monochrome tones allow the foliage, masonry and sky to remain distinct without needing colour to separate them.

I made this photograph in 2012. For me, it offers a lighthouse view grounded in its island surroundings. As wall art, it may suit a coastal living room, hallway or study with an interest in maritime architecture. It can appeal to someone who enjoys Dry Tortugas, Florida scenery or black and white lighthouse photographs. The tower provides a strong point of focus, while the palms and weathered surfaces give the scene details to return to.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Dry-Tortugas-Lighthouse-and-Palms-Black-and-White-Photography-Print-1.jpg?v=1791655994
